I dislike putting up ceilings I’ve discovered. It’s hard, it’s painful and I just don’t like it. Still, it’s got to be done. This is the first of 6 panels to put up

I thought the walls were enough of a hassle, but it looks like the ceiling is gonna be a whole new experience! Bet you're glad your boat's not as long as Rob's!

Superman James I will have to know you in future. I have followed you all through Slow Patrol, your support for your "families" and your job issues and now the current build. Many , many vlogs and I have not missed one and enjoyed them all. Unfortunately I can't stop using your phrase Happy Days!! You will have a lovely new home/boat when you have finished . My best to you and yours.

Given that you heat your boat with a diesel flame … although contained … that ceiling material could become life threatening in a hurry. The hob as you call it over there is another “flame” source. I hope that I’m totally wrong on this. It isn’t too late to change course if need be. A lot of satisfactory work has been done so far despite the multiple challenges which include the armchair tradesmen of the peanut gallery. 😂

They also make thin strips of hard insulation that you cut to fit. Spray foam is too much trouble. I hate to be critical but that ceiling looks cheap very cheap. I pictured that you were going put a beautiful horizontal slat ceiling the wood would be such a beautiful touch.

Love your channel and almost everything you have done on your boats. That flimsy ceiling is the only thing I really think will come back and haunt you. Still it's your project so I support what you are doing. Would have loved to see maybe white planks up there. All the best.

There is a reason why even formica laminate is laid on a solid surface or has a backing. This ceiling is SO wrong. Regret will not be long in coming. All your needed was 1/8th ply and some bostick. It would have been so much less hassle than all that spray foam and juggling props.

Expanding foam cure's with moisture, it typically absorbs moisture from the air but you can give it a little spray if your going to cover it over.

It’s nigh on impossible to give advice when James is already committed and proceeds regardless. The best advice is to change course and use what I would guess 99% of others who fit out narrow boats would use, including professionals, and that’s plywood, tongue and groove boards etc. EXCELLENT points regarding heat from fire and hob, very thin plastic sheets !!!!!!!!!! Sagging!!!!!!!!!! It’s not always a good thing to keep giving encouragement when there are SAFETY issues.

The boat that James bodged, you should have bonded the plastic to at least 6mm ply, the place will be so cold, try harder James, I hope your not doing it to sell on,

Good point regarding the cold, ply would give a better insulation and I very much doubt spray foam from a can gives the same insulation effect as doing a proper spray job.

Tip, take planks and put them from wall to wall at the ceiling every meter. Then you can slide the pvc over it to the position it needs to be. Then attach it. And remove the planks and so on

I don't think it's going to work long term, mate. As others have stated, because it's so thin, it's going to sag when it warms up, and really needs glueing to something flat, quite apart from the fire hazard I mentioned yesterday. Can you get a refund on the remaining sheets? If you're going to add a two inch wide trim at every roof batten, there wont be much PVC left to admire. Just my opinion, and many other different opinions are available. 😉 All the best.

Single can spray foam won't cure without water that it typically gets from the air. 2-part foam cures with the interaction of the 2 parts. Like epoxy. Once you have spray foam against the metal hull, you could fill the remaining space with mineral wool. Tricky in overhead spaces.

I know this is a silly question and you probably haven’t fought it through properly, but if you put your normal six mm ply on the ceiling then the white UPVC boarding sheet You glue over the top x ❤
@boblawrence5011
@boblawrence5011 4 месяца назад
No he hasn’t thought it through properly, first he should have used only ply on the ceiling, then thinking about the glueing part of the process, gravity is not always helpful. Apart from the added cost of glue and UPVC sheets, which James can’t afford, if he used contact adhesive by Jove he would have one heck of a job lining up any previously drilled holes and once the very thin plastic touches the adhesive it’s stuck, he won’t get a second chance, If on the other hand he used another adhesive which dries over time and gives him time to manoeuvre the plastic sheet he would then have the added problem of keeping the sheet in place, as I say, gravity is not always helpful. He could fasten ply as normal and would have no flexing where the screws go in, fill in over the screw heads and paint the ply gloss or sheen white. People keep commenting on negative attitude so there’s a bit of positive advice.

I understand and I’m still figuring this out. The same uPVC is used for making bathroom and kitchen ceiling cladding which is allowed by building regs. UPVC is fire retardant. I’m not looking for an argument just saying what I know. As I said I’m not made up with this yet.

If you were so intent on having a plastic ceiling, why didn't you just use bathroom cladding panels? They're much easier to work with, have concealed fixings, come in a multutude of different designs and patterns and wouldn't require all the batten trims you are now going have to install.
@boblawrence5011

This is actually a good idea, if they were fire resistant. Tongue and groove cladding has been used before on other boats and I suspect it’s not too expensive
@markdoble736

@@boblawrence5011 Reputable suppliers of bathroom cladding claim their products are Grade 1 Fire Resistant, which is probably sufficient on a narrowboat, given that the alternative would probably be a plywood sheet type ceiling anyway.
