#54 How to Recover from a Stuffed Shot

If you have wrestled you know this position. You got stuffed on a shot and you are carrying your opponent’s weight. Letting of of the leg can be dangerous in BJJ, because you can get hit with the d’arce, with a head on the inside single, or guillotined with your head on the outside. Back in the 1990s, we were all taught how to recover from a bad shot using the John Smith methods. Here, I show the mechanics of what really makes this work.

i think i say this on behalf of all the grapplers who for whatever reason didnt wrestle in high school and now are doing jiujitsu, thank you so much. Genuinely the high level details with pure fundamentals is absolutely game changing. wrestling is now becoming one of my favourite aspects of jiujitsu/grappling and a large part has to do with the content you put out. Lots of people overlook the fundamentals, but your videos are perfect for the ones who understand their importance. Thank you once again boss and keep up the good content!

Thank you! I sincerely appreciate your comments. When I first got into BJJ, I figured that if I can coach 14-18 year old kids with no experience to state titles, then I can surely coach adults who actually listen. Lol! The system works. It matters that you have legitimate wrestling experience when teaching these things. Too many are used to wrestling people in BJJ with zero experience and getting a false sense of what actually works. Or just demonstrating techniques on people who provide zero resistance

@@josephbreza-grappling9459 yes it seems like an ongoing problem of instructors/students undergoing false positives due to them being better than their opponent or their is just 0 resistance. They almost begin to believe their own lies until they are met with a proper response or a competent partner and you can see how upset they are for all the time spent wasted doing something that doesnt work at a intermediate level. a second question (my apologies if you have already answered this elsewhere): how would you typically implement your techniques / systems of grappling? Obviously just doing a technique on a dead opponent is out the window. I have been enjoying the 'Ecological Approach' talked frequently by Greg Souders lately. Essentially constraint based learning and creating games around the rules if you werent familiar. So id be curious to hear how you were taught / currently teach your grappling system / specific techniques. Thanks!

In some ways, wrestling should be considered a martial art, because the way practice is organized, it’s rigorous like Japanese style martial arts. For example, I did Shotokan as a kid and then Judo after my wrestling career. All those styles rigorously drill fundamentals and moves over and over until they are muscle memory. Then, they build on systems tying them together. But they pretty much get you started off the bat. The first day of wrestling practice will be stance-lots of it. And they will have a partner learn how to disrupt stance, like I show on my stance video. Within the first week they are learning takedowns, basic escapes, and basic rides, so that they can work from those positions in a live setting. As time goes on, you build on the system. So unlike some of the instructionals out there showing 1000 moves with little conceptual background on how to tie them into each other, a good coach will already have them doing simple systems of tying moves together maintaining and disrupting position from the start. Then they will build on them

Oh yes, I have done 1 on 1 sessions for many years. It, however, depends on a lot of things. For one, I am going on 44 years old now with 33 years on the mat. So I am not banging my head in the gym 6hrs a day for competition. This is also not my full-time job. I am a Neuroscience Professor who does full-time research and teaching. We all get into this position. It’s going to happen. Like being in side control. The longer you give him time to get control, the worse it gets. I think this is one of BJJ’s biggest issues with wrestling. You must do what you need to do and do it with authority. I see people get great standing snatch singles and just fucking stand there with it. It’s not just BJJ though; that happens with new HS wrestlers too. After they get tired of losing scoring opportunities they start to get it. Then at every level the clock of scoring opportunity just gets shorter and shorter. You have to move while you have that momentary advantage. Drill drill drill, then it’s automatic
@Pedro_FX17
@Pedro_FX17 11 месяцев назад
@@josephbreza-grappling9459 Absolutely. I see that single leg problem too, in most 'high-level' BJJ matches. They really just stand there after getting to a single. And that idea you're talking about applies to many scenarios and positions 👍 Thanks always for replying and passing on the knowledge!

6:10, 9:20 came back to this video after the Dante Leon vs Ethan Crelinsten match last night. Ethan plays Knee-Shield, gets an Underhook, gets up to his knees to Dog-Fight several times. Both times Dante takes a deep Whizzer, grabbing his own hip and launches Ethan back to the mat. Sean Williams is commentating and mentions Ethan should have switched to the Leg to beat the Whizzer. You were right about the Side-Bodylock & Wrestlers Seatbelt. The Whizzer is stronger and needs to be respected.

It’s really because of the hip position. I made sure to cover this on my wrestlingforbjj instructional. Should be ready in a few weeks. These really are fundamental concepts in wrestling and judo. Initially people fought back against me for saying those things. But those positions are frustrating when both people are skilled. It’s because both people have arsenal. You have to disarm people. There’s a breakdowns guy who says you should get into the dogfight. That’s bullshit. You need to avoid the dogfight because it’s a grind in there. In wrestling, we are taught to beat the dogfight, because if the position doesn’t advance they call a stalemate and it gets reset. And that sucks when that happens because all that work for nothing
@thos1618
@thos1618 9 месяцев назад
I didn't want to hear what you were saying at first either, but came to accept it. I'll be one of the first buyers of the instructional. So you've got me on the Side-Bodylock, the Dog-Fight, but I'm not there on the Sag-Headlock yet. -- That's probably true of a lot of your audience.
@josephbreza-grappling9459
@josephbreza-grappling9459 9 месяцев назад
Once you have a good kesa getame, you won’t fear it. If you have good control over his tricep, you can put his back on the mat. If he is flat, you have good tricep control, your head is low, and your legs are towards his head, you can’t get your back taken. Literally impossible. Like I said on my kesa getame video, if you start to lose the tricep, you have time to bail out. Ffion Davies fucking smashes people with the headlock. A lot of people think uchi mata is better, but it gives him the underhook on landing. So, like all grappling you have decisions to make. Do I follow him all the way to the mat and try to secure that position or do I just use the throw as a way to prevent him from taking my back off the side headlock and live another day? I didn’t get into it, but I use the sagging headlock or hari goshi depending on his hips. They aren’t interchangeable, I have to make that choice depending on where he is. And I just don’t like the uchi mata in noGi as much, because I don’t get the lift with being vertically challenged and without the gi, I don’t rely on that arm pull that’s essential to make it work

Essentially the top man is trying to extend you and take away your posts. You are trying to regain your position and get posts. That’s the game. And it works from essentially all positions. Standing you want to maintain a strong position and not get extended. When doing a stand up you want to stay in good position. On top I want to extend them. Etc etc.

I have another video that I recorded that shows what you do if your grip breaks and you need to switch to another move. If you still have the grip? Then you should try to finish the takedown. Because switching to something else gets that cat/mouse scramble game going. In BJJ, I generally come out in a favorable position when scrambles happen, because I have so much time on the mat. But if I were in were collegiate wrestling room, I would want to shut the scramble down, because they are just as good as I am from there but 25 years younger

I get to this position a lot and lose it, so I’m going to definitely work on this, and try to get more finishes. Say you don’t execute this properly and the guy manages to cover your head with his hips squared up and manages to break your grip completely…. At that point, should you be thinking peak out, drag, or try to 4 point out of there depending on how high up there weight is and there grip (like front head lock vs over wrap)? would love to see some details on that.

When I try this recovery that you've shown, my training partners often cover my head with their ups then square up and re-sprawl, am I just not circling far enough after the knee slide? Is it fundamentally sound to switch to an underhook and try to build back up to my feet, or is that one of those low level things that falls apart against an opponent that knows what they're doing? I do try to fight hands with the other hand to prevent the sag headlock.
@josephbreza-grappling9459
@josephbreza-grappling9459 11 месяцев назад
You might not be securing your elbow deep and dropping your hip. The hip drop is definitely the best way to take away their defense. It’s going to be a fight, but if you know what you are working for, then you know it’s worth the effort. Try doing it under Dom’s hips. Lol. I definitely would not advise trying to come up to an underhook from there. If you can’t beat their hips with turning the corner, the how can you blast through their body to get good underhook position? If your hips come up, your grip will break. And that is my time to take your back. You need to be in an upright position to have a strong underhook. If someone tried to get an underhook off that shot, I would just drag to the back

So essentially, instead of pulling them to you, you are pulling yourself to them? You are shrugging your shoulders and moving your torso forward to take their weight off of you so you can slide your knee then whole body under to get even more underneath their leg and hips, so then you can cut the corner with your dropped hip, then drop your elbow to block their leg to prevent them from further circling to face you, and covering the inside of their leg with your leg and shelfing, correct?
@josephbreza-grappling9459
@josephbreza-grappling9459 11 месяцев назад
Yes, you can’t pull them to you with your arms in that compromised position. The shoulder shrug is a lat pull and rounding of the top of the shoulders to build height so that I have posts under me to hold my weight. That makes my leg able to knee slide because the weight is off of it. The elbow drop secures the angle, because it’s anchored to me and there’s some friction on the mat with my entire forearm. Step over the leg and windshield wiper it out like I showed in detail on video 2 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5_vZy4cZ5n4.html And 39 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Hsd-2le-PQ.html

There's a choke a black belt at my gym has been hitting on me for years every time i try to get to this low outside single position on him. Unfortunately I can't find it anywhere on youtube so I can't provide a link atm, but I know I've seen it online. Basically in the position at 5:22, he would do sort of a back step so that he is sitting on my shoulder blades with all his weight. Then he'd reach around my neck with his left arm, and reach underneath my right armpit with his right arm, and lock his hands under my neck. His locked hands are squeezing upward into my neck and his butt is pressuring downward against the back of my neck (creating the counter pressure for the choke). He can finish there, but we generally fall to a side and he finishes. It somewhat similar to a peruvian necktie. If that explanation made any sense at all, I'm wondering if you've encountered this, or what you think might prevent it.

Maybe you have a better solution than John Smith? Lol This is the classic way of doing it. I showed the finish on #2, the dogfight video (39) and on my instructional. There are a lot of reasons why. It doesn’t decrease mobility. You walk backwards. It keep pressure on the thigh while I create angle and prevents him from getting a crotch lift and scoring in freestyle or getting me on the opposite hip, head height and crossfaced onto my back. Opposite of counterintuitive. This video isn’t even about that. Go watch the other ones and tell me what I am doing wrong over there, lol

That is literally what I am doing. I am doing the John Smith palm down version. I show that I am doing it at 2:00 in. You pretty much have to do it that way, because as I turn the corner, I want my palm down to make contact with the mat so I get my elbow behind.
@dustinwilliamson1250
@dustinwilliamson1250 9 месяцев назад
I realize that it is clearly the best grip for recovering from a stuffed shot but I was wondering if you have tried using it for controlling and finishing an unsprawled on single leg as opposed to the gable grip that most people show when controlling a single leg? If you have, what are the advantages and drawbacks?
@josephbreza-grappling9459
@josephbreza-grappling9459 9 месяцев назад
@dustinwilliamson1250 oh I see. I like the gable grip with my palm facing down so he can’t break my grip, and I think it makes my grip tighter on his knee for running the pipe, pressure on the thigh move, and easier to transition to the high single. I just feel more powerful there. The John Smith style from getting stuffed works well when my arms are extended, but I feel that the gable grip works well when my arms are tight. I’ll try to watch that video that you sent, but I am knee deep in editing my instructional right now

Outside of the palm to the mat, behind his knee, then shrug while driving to knee slide and get closer, putting weight on the outside of the palm and creating angle. Then drop that elbow once you are sure you’ve created enough height and angle. This shit is not easy. You are stuffed and therefore have to pay the price for that

All kidding aside, someone somehow edited my video to have intro, and then subsections. It wasn’t me. How the hell could someone do that? And if I were to timestamp it in the description, would that automatically show up on the scrollbar? If you know, that would be awesome

@@josephbreza-grappling9459 If you want to timestamp mate put 0:00 in the description then whatever you want to timestamp like after put 5:00 for 5 minute timestamp

@@josephbreza-grappling9459 dude you take things to serious! That was just a note for myself so i could start from the technique and watch over. Its nothing more than a bookmark. I like to watch things over and over.

I definitely don’t take things too seriously, LOL. Quite the opposite, which is why I used to get in so much trouble in school. Sorry if it came off that way. It’s not always easy to tell whether someone is joking in writing, which is why I laughed to help with that. If you go to video 2 there are “chapters.” I didn’t make those-apparently they are “autogenerated.” I have no idea why it did that for video 2 and no other video. It would be nice to have those for all my videos, which I suppose I can do in the description…?
