WOW 🤩 that was really interesting with a lot of thought on train movements 👍🏻 Oldham wakes holidays must of been absolutely fantastic back in the day with all those excursion trains 😀 I can remember my late parents taking me on the Butlins holiday trains from Manchester Exchange to Pwllheli back in the 60s I got a ride on the foot plate of a black 5 all the away too Bangor as they changed locomotives their to tank engines because of the weight I think!! My Mum slapped my head when I got off as I was filthy 🤣 I also spent many hours playing on Princess Margaret Rose as it was on static display with a small tank engine. I do love the memories this channel is provoking. I just wish I a was a few years older so I could have enjoyed the steam experience too. The closest I got was a visit to Barry yard in 1969... Oh did my eyes pop.
Always enjoy a McKinley update, my late dad is from Halifax. I remember the smell of toffee as a kid standing on the platform waiting for the train to Manchester.
Thank you for the update on the ongoing project. Having watched all the other videos it fills lots of gaps for us all. Best ongoing series on youtube for me. Maybe others should watch the others videos in the series before watching the latest videos. Keep it up David :)
Hello Pat, come back in a year or two... Its a big project. We are as keen as anyone to get there, but it takes time. We can't run trains yet. It would be like trying to fly Concorde without a tail fin.
Nice to hear the rational and planning that's driving this development and a bit about the history too. Always interesting to learn about how arrivals and shunting accomplished with track layout properly explained. Was very surprised that you didn't model the buildings in the CAD and then review in 3D, shame 3x attempts on that simple outline physical. Its easy (certainly for me in SCARM) to knock up a representation using simple shapes and adding windows and doors makes all the difference to how things look, ditto on colours. I certainly have saved a lot of time and seen better ways/ improvements as a result of the CAD work before I build, the 3D views been crucial to me. But as always it has to be what works best for you! Best regards Stephen
Just for info - the Gasworks at Southend-on-Sea shut down after North Sea gas arrived, with the exception of a 60's build three storey office block, which remained in use for billing / accounts purposes for many years. Not so the rest of the site. All industrial buildings were demolished, the ground was declared 'toxic' and re-building was prohibited until fairly recently, so probably no rush for you to rebuild within your time-frame. Sometimes it's good to see the planning process too - future generations may be intrigued to look back and learn of the sorts of considerations you are having now, resulting in the layout they see after it's become reality.
I came across this channel sometime ago after it was mentioned on Chadwick. This one caught my attention for two reasons, firstly it is my Mum's home town and secondly Old Lane Mill. You will find a video exploring this mill on Martin Zero's RU-vid channel and also other mills in Manchester area, one of which was being prepared for demolition, this one had three Lancashire boilers in a bit of a sorry state. In another of his videos, about the hydraulic power network, Martin shows a restored boiler in a Manchester museum. I look forward to seeing how this section develops. Good luck from Spain!!
Can you point us to them. We'd love to model that. We have seen the big picture window on the front left of the building and seen pictures of the internal ornate ceiling is that area. It was clearly something that was shown off in its heyday.

This narration behind the layout and it´s upcoming timetable showed well how near to prototypical you are going to operate (some day in future when you been through building, track laying, ..., testing, ..., trying another mock-up of this or that building, ..,landscaping, ..., and so on), that this got to be planned in from the beginning as on the real thing to get it well (and that it´s very further away from trains just running cicles - what some people seem to expected to see), some thoughts: Next time Charlie should put a warning in "Rather theoretical - get a coffee or tee!" Hades might not be the best seaside holiday destination for hard working midland GB people -> therefore go throw the rooms and see if there is a place for a charming seaside town with a pier somewhere. Wouldn´t it be possible to move the station more to the left - plattforms starting roughly in the middle of the plan, "further going" tracks overbuild (town scene above) at the right end - to get the cassetts (and trains) longer? The places for all those industries + canal sound very tight, with alot of shunting operation (especially the gas works and it´s products). Does the toffee manufacture got a shop next to production? If yes, "we" need a way to get there! 😉
Wacthing the videoo about the Halifax yard I wondered if teh team are awaar pf teh setuation in the neighbouring town of Huddersffeld where the local mills were in some cases supplied with coke from the jocal raileay yard by Coubcil Electric Bulk carrier Tram using the passenger track network.with nill delivery sidings, This could be a novel feature for a Boutnmouth based railway layout. A MbKinley "FiRST" I feel, a short run of tramway track with cuke sidings intio Tibbles Mill and some differant rolling stock for David to worry about.
McKinley, David. Passenger trains on the Somerset and Dorset to take returning holiday makers back north on Saturday would fill the goods yard each with it's locomotive on the front and in steam. As each train departed the next would pull out of the yard and reverse back into the station. A lot of these goods yards made use of shunting horse's to move wagon stock around and to get into tight spaces. Will the gas work's make use of wagon turntables? When the late Rev. Peter Denny built a gasworks for "Buckingham" in the early 1960's he installed a working wagon turntable all operated by Merccano parts, to shunt one wagon at a time. We are thinking of implementing the summer Saturdays logic at some stage, but that is way off into the future at present. I can't contemplate wagon turntables.. My brain is fizzing with the complexity of freight waybills... Sorry to disappoint.
How special its going to be to model that canal right after the tunnel. has so much character at 26:50 and how it could "blend" into a little scenic area around itself. Splash of color somewhere to go with the water, however you would choose to do that. I wouldn't make it "prototypical" in the sense of graffiti or dark water. I would lean more toward the eye of the real engineers who built it with pride. Not sure if what I'm saying here is making any sense. On another subject I can relate to the thumping of the mill. Like a heartbeat of local industry. I've had my own experience long time ago as I would go out on the porch late at night and hear in the distance over the hills the pounding of oil pumps. Its fascinating what moments we absorb in our youth and which ones we completely miss. another great vid. thanks
Fascinating to see the reasoning behind freight working and facilities provided. With inwards/outwards traffic, it's easy with vans and tankers, but how will you manipulate open wagons - presumably you'll have removable loads but how will you arrange that?
Could have been a lot more entertaining than just the three guys talking straight at the camera for almost three quarters of an hour. Even if there is no ability to run trains in this section just yet, even seeing coaches or wagons pushed around to demonstrate the reasons behind your thinking as per some of your older videos would have been more interesting...Like others I too was somewhat disappointed in the content. Hopefully the next video we will be able to see more demonstrations or B-Roll footage behind the narrative.
The extension will be near complete in Q2 2022. The challenge is upgrading the old layout to RFID and freight. Hopefully we will be able to run through trains by the end of this year. Overall completion with scenics.. No idea.. One day at a time.
Why not have part of the building open so to see the workings inside going on. Also will you ever have magna rail in use to bring life to the railway. At around 5:37 you show the Fat Controller's station. It looks like there might be enough room to take trains through Copley Street and on around the back of the various screens, though you may have to slightly reposition the one on the extreme left. This could give you even greater operational flexibility, you could have (another) vertical lift for storing your cassettes on the wall, allowing longer or complete trains to be reversed within the lift structure. Just a thought, but the layout is already so complex I thought it might be fun to set you guys yet another challenge. Is McKinley's Chocolates/Toffees (there seems to be some confusion here) the source of the funds for the railway? It's nice to think of David as some sort of modern day Willy Wonka.
Hello Chazzy B, Thank you for your ideas, but I cannot face trying to cram an single inch of track into the room right now. The scale and complexity we have built into the layout is already frying my brain. I'll talk it through with Steve Davies just in case we can do something, but that area is the main walkway into the other room with the existing layout. Regards David

Hello Suzanne, We have used everything. It depends on what the designer wants to use for a specific area. Steve Skinner created the original layout in one product. Steve Davies used AutoCad for the overall room and layout design for the extension. Malcolm used XtrackCad for Sheffield. Richard used AnyRail for Halifax and Wakefield. We end up drawing the final "as-built" in 3rdPlanit, but that only because it is what I started with and 80% of the overall layout is in it. We think the easiest package is AnyRail but I don't want to start a discussion on that topic. It is designers choice at the end of the day. Regards David
As Halifax is clearly not [quite] end-of-track, any reason why there are no onward freight trains, as there is with passenger service ... in imagination?
Good design takes time. Haste is bad, especially when we want to enjoy the layout for the next 20 years... Our design process is what it is. We have a great set of good minds thrashing through the possibilities.
