Scratched off another fish off my bucket list! Caught my very first and my PB 56" Wahoo!
I was trolling for kings to salvage the not so hot day of fishing. Bagged only two keeper red snappers (out of some 20+ that were caught and released) and didn't want it to end there. It was one of the hottest days this year and I was worn out before fighting this beast.
Although I always wished this would happen, never thought it would happen with the limits of my boat only able to go out no more than 40-45 miles. Wahoos are typically caught about 60-150 miles out and in some deep blue waters AND during the winter season! So you can see why I was excited and pumped!
Wahoo was caught about 35 miles out from Freeport, Texas. There were at least 20+ boats out there pulling up nothing but undersized red snappers most of the time. About past noon, the bait fish started boiling at the top. There was also a sail fish that jumped out of the water! Several large sharks also rolled in near the topwater!
Weather forecast was just as forecasted, except on the way out of port, waves were not under 2 ft and wind was at least 10+ mph. But they all did settle down, then it got hot hot hot!
Used a Halco Max 130 trolling lure with a 24"-30" steel leader, my usual setup for kings. Reel I was using is a Truth Reel, which changed its name to Release Reel, then sold to Siegler Fishing Reels!
