On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. The document was engrossed on parchment and, one by one, 56 representatives from all 13 colonies signed it.
he Declaration of Independence was the Continental Congress's "line in the sand," their "crossing the Rubicon," and their "point of no return" that, in turn, influenced the destiny of the people they represented. If it were a poker game, the American colonists were "all in." Not only were the signers putting their lives and futures on the line, but they were gambling with those of the 2.5 million colonists. Declaring open rebellion against the most powerful empire on earth, these men signed their "John Hancocks" to the Declaration of Independence. One of the signers of this document, Benjamin Franklin stated in earnest, "We must all hang together or, assuredly we shall all hang separately."
The Declaration of Independence states the principles on which our government, and our identity as Americans, are based. Unlike the other founding documents, the Declaration of Independence is not legally binding, but it is powerful. Abraham Lincoln called it “a rebuke and a stumbling-block to tyranny and oppression.” It continues to inspire people around the world to fight for freedom and equality.
This short historical film offers new insight into the sacrifices and suffering of our founding fathers - the original 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Every politician and voter should watch this film to appreciate what our forefathers gave up to give us a new country and new freedoms. Please share.

The sacrifices were beyond imaginable ... Such sorrow, and yet, courage. God bless America.

The United States of America would never win the Revolutionary War, if France was not an ally and did not give military assistance to the newly declared Independent United States of America!

I am not an American, but I am deeply interested in American history. The United States Declaration of Independence was actually inspired and influenced by the widespread publication and circulation of pamphlets of "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine! Before the widespread circulation of "Common Sense", there were no Revolutionary patriots who openly advocated American Independence from British Empire! I just don't know why Thomas Paine is not considered as one of the Founders of the United States!

The fact that these 56 men were willing to sign this document, knowing that they could have been willingly committing what could have suicide, it astonishing. I wake up every day, almost teary, as I remember what was risked for my country to come into being. Thank you, my friends, for what you have done for my country.

I didnt make it back to the signers. My genealogy ends at Thomas McKean 1776-1831 and Thomas McKean 1799-1831. I was so close to being rich. Just missed it.
