I finally upgraded my 5600X to a 5800X3D, but was the upgrade worth it?
We go through a number of games at 1080p and 1440p and see where having a faster CPU can pay dividends, and where you’re still GPU limited.
Get subbed to the channel as I have a 4080 Super on order and can’t wait to test it out on the channel!

I went from a 2600X to the 5800X3D. Massive improvements on both average frame rate and 1% lows. Then I swapped out the 2060 for a 7900 XT and got blown away- again.

I upgraded from 5700x to 5800x3d. In my usecase it was 100% worth it. I play escape from Tarkov which is a very poorly optimized game. You are almost always in cpu bottleneck. So the upgrade not only improved 1% lows but also average fps significantly

This applies almost any Unity-based game, not just Tarkov. I have a few of them and 5800X3D has been much better than tuned 5800X. Too bad reviewers always focus on well-polished highly GPU bound AAA-games.
@stangamer1151
@stangamer1151 4 месяца назад
The big problem for 5800X3D at it's current price is much cheaper 7500f. This CPU, when tuned, usually matches and sometimes even outperforms 5800X3D. This makes the latter quite a bad value option. I think that is the main reason why 5700X3D was released. Though it is a bit too expensive as well. Hopefully it will drift to $220 soon. Then it would be a decent upgrade option for any AM4 owner.

still with 5800x myself and 7900XTX, the cpu is basically useless to upgrade unless you're looking for that potential 10-15% (depends) slight bottleneck that might occasionally crop up in rare cases, and for latest stuff i utilize FSR 3 + Frame Gen mods anyways so it's not like it matters at all at that point next gen ryzens then i might even update to DDR5 eventually

I also did the swap from the 5600X to the 5800X3D like nearly a year ago. The improvement in my mainly played game DayZ at this time was immense. Playing on 1440p 240hz and the 5600X wasn't capable of delivering any fps more than 150fps. This swap brought me a fps boost of like 100-130fps depending on the situation, what is pretty damn crazy. It also depends alot on what kind of game you are playing. In the case of a very cpu intense title like DayZ its a night/day difference between this two ones.

Great video, well shot/presented with useful info! I have watched all the previous big YT channels reviews on the 5800X3D when it first came out, but am always happy to watch other videos from smaller channels, and yours popped up on my home page. My jump was more significant than your 5600X, as I upgraded from a 3700X to the 5800X3D in early 2023 when they were at their cheapest, and it was a great boost all round, especially for sim racing (I saw an average increase of 20% in FPS and much better 1% lows). It's also provided a smoother experience in VR. I then upgraded my 2070S to a 7900XTX mid 2023, and I'm set for the next 3 years at least, hopefully longer. I suspect you'll be the same. The 5800X3D isn't quite as good value now, but it still saves you spending $$$ on a full platform upgrade, so it's still worth it given how rock solid AM4 is.

Nice timing of your video as I’m going through similar situation myself. I have 5600X with RTX 3090 (I play all titles on 4K as I have LG C2 which can go up to 120hz) and lately I started thinking of upgrading my CPU but to be honest I started thinking about upgrading mainly because of all other things other than gaming performance. I’m pretty happy with how it handles the games I play (Warframe mostly) but I started getting annoyed on how it slowed down on Windows 11 startup, and some other situations where I literally see that CPU is kinda struggling. From that perspective I started thinking between 5800x3D and 5950X and I still can’t decide in my head because one is really fast in all tasks except gaming and the other one is super strong in gaming… I’ll also wait for your video with 4080 which hopefully might give me more insight on wether should I go for 5800X3D or just go for raw performance in everything else with 5950X. Great video btw. Looking forward to the new one.

I went from a 5800x to the 3d variant, was thinking of going 7800x3d then decided on 7900x since the difference isn’t as big at 1440p (I have 1440p ultrawide so even less) and has more cores at the same price (Amazon). While trying to pick out a motherboard to pair with it, I had a dejavu moment to Ryzen 1000, having to deal with QVL with Ram, and just ddr5/bios creating instability a year after being released. For reference, most of the boards I looked at had a bios update in September-October and everything else between there and now being labeled Beta. The Reddit threads talking about some of these beta bios versions bricking their boards and eventually being deleted off their downloads page. Did not inspire confidence in the current offerings, now waiting on what the improvements the refresh (assuming that’s what we’ll get) brings. Absolute horror stories of boot times being longer than windows on a spinning hard drive and it being a normal occurrence. One guy was praising a bios update that cut his boot time from 2 minutes to 30 seconds lmao.

I had a 5800X and got a good deal on a 5800X3D a while back. It made a noticeable difference to MSFS... But I just upgraded from my 3070 (which is all I could get during the GPU famine a few years back) to a 4080 Super. I nearly always use VR in MSFS and before, whatever adjustment I made, I was always squeezing every last drop out of my system... the 4080 Super was like lifting a weight off my shoulders.... 30fps with judders instantly became 65fps without. I have now been able to activate things I had forgotten about long ago like ambient occlusion (which adds contrast to the scenery and makes the instrument panel come to life), raymarched reflections (which brings the Downtown Manhattan skyline to life - reflected in the water!)...not to mention shadow maps up to 4096 and a whole host of things I had to do without, but that add immensley to the experience. With everything cranked up, I haven't been able to force it below 30fps yet, but noticeably, it is the smoothness that has massively improved. And I haven't even touched on 2D with DLSS Frame Generation ON. Double frame rate with no real loss of quality (as long as you don't use the built in FPS counter that only shows pre-frame generation figures of course - Afterburner overlay is fine)... You are going to love your 4080 Super! I had to upgrade my PSU so as to prevent any awkward fire type incidents but otherwise, it is brilliant (approx £500 too much, but brilliant)

Back when 5000 series released, looking for an upgrade from 2600X while I was thinking about 5600x or 5800x in the end I got 5900x because of the much larger L3 Cache 64MB and I this is the reason why I am not moving to DDR5 yet. Because of issues with 7000 series and the windows thread director, I will probably be waiting for 9800x3D or 9900x which will release toward end of 2024 if rumors are true, and provide substantial IPC gains. Regarding 5800x3D my opinion is that it is a great choice for a DDR4 platform upgrade if you have a really powerful GPU and want to push competitive high-fps titles. For example, a friend who is a competitive player of COD Warzone went through a few upgrades and lastly got RTX4070 Super but will upgrade 5800x for a 5800x3D to get from ~160fps (currently) to ~200fps (educated estimate) without having to transition to a DDR5 platform.

I had an 5800x3d back in the day and compared it to mine 12700k and 12900k(b-die ddr4) and was impressed how good it was, but ddr5 changed it all, remember that zen4 is still basically zen3 but with more level 2 cache and ddr5 memory support and it is basically as fast as the 5800x3d. a friend of mine upgraded like a year ago to an 5800x3d from an 1600 and he was supper happy, still is. he then upgraded from the 3060ti to an 7900xtx and the alienware 165hz qd-oled. Pretty sure his am4 sys will keep up with most modern cpus for a long time to come at higher graphical settings. but personally I hate the emtpy map runs, all u get to see is the best case scenario, not really like if one looked at the sky or an ocean view but almost, one should also include a view in the middle of it, in action and with more objects/players on. Sure it increases the load on the gpu but also the cpu.

Looking at the games I am playing at the moment it is not really necessary and I am pretty happy to have little better fps and a way smoother experience for now. My monitor maxes out at a 175hz so based on that, I plan to skip Zen 4 all together. It would be best if we explain how to answer your question yourself so you can learn how to spot bottlenecks in the future. You need to add an overlay to show your GPU usage and a breakdown of your CPU usage showing what each CPU core is doing while gaming. If the GPU is near 100% then you don't need a CPU upgrade. If your GPU usage is much lower then it's being held back by the CPU. The 8700K has 6 cores so check if any of them have utilization near 90% or above. Don't look at the overall CPU utilization because that doesn't mean anything unless all cores are maxed out.

I upgraded from 5800X (B0 stepping) to 5800X3D. This upgrade cost me around 140€. But was it worth it?! More than worth it! I play Squad, Arma etc. (Online) and got a massive improvement in GPU usage (7800XT@ 1440p). Sometimes the GPU usage dropped to 80% in Squad for longer periods. That is all gone now. It's almost always 92%+, most of the time 95-100%. So it was a huge FPS improvement, both in AVG and 1% lows. You should set Curve Optimizer all core to -25 or -30 (nothing else needed). That will boost your cores ingame to 4,45 Ghz (constant!) and brings you a further FPS and rendering score boost. It will lower your temps around -10c (huge improvement!) and your CPU power consumption will be a dream. No need to go for AM5 at all if you do more gaming than content. For 1440p/1080p it's the perfect upgrade, especially for Online MP Games, which will have massiv benefits. This is a CPU for years to come and already a legend!

That's the way AMD want it to be done. Some golden chips can do the maximum of -30. But almost all 3D can do -25. This will give you a huge performance boost in games and even in cinebench. My Personal experience: upgrading in the same generation is never worth it. You can measure it but you barely feel it. But with next generation you can feel the difference even without frame counter. My upgrade from i7 2600k to 5900X is what you call an upgrade.

I used a Ryzen 9 3900x for 3 years and then recently slotted in a Ryzen 7 5800x3D, same generation, i feel it.

I see most difference is in multiplayer shooters, noticeable here in warzone. Can you test pubg, apex and similar fps games as there are most visible performance boost?

I just got into PC building/gaming over the last year. I currently have the same chip 5600x/B550 MB and 3060ti FE. Mid tier set up i guess. Was thinking of upgrading to 5800x3d/7900xtx. Or maybe just use 5600x/7900xtx??

Get the gpu and wait for zen 5 for your cpu upgrade is what I'm doing , I have a 5600x and 7900xtx and at 4k its ok not worth staying on am4 imo

I'll definitely be doing this upgrade in the near future but I think I'll upgrade the gpu first. Im still on a 2070 and 5600x still gives good enough performance for now. So GPU takes priority. Im thinking 7700XT or 7800XT just depends on whats available.

If the rx6800 is maxed out near 100% then you don't need a 5800x3d. If the 5600x is bottlenecked then the rx6800 won't be able to reach anywhere near 100% and will be much lower. You need to enable the overlays like the guy in the video did. He explained how to spot a bottleneck. This video is for our benefit so we can learn how to spot a bottleneck.
