(573) Colorful Alcohol Ink Painting on Wood

Hi everyone, in this video, I am using the alcohol ink painting technique again!
Follow along!
I used a 20-inch wood circle as a surface which I prepped with tape around the edges and primed to make it waterproof. For this piece, I used beautiful shades of blue and green ink.
The colors blended very well together. It inspired me to try this alcohol ink painting technique on canvas.

Thank you! I think you just need to prime the wood before hand and then you're good to go!

Hi Amanda...I really enjoy your journey with the inks. I also enjoy your voice instructions as well. I'm looking forward to more of alcohol ink projects. Will you be sealing this and putting resin on top? This piece came out beautifully and only using a couple of inks!!!

Thank you!! Yes, I plan on finishing this with resin and then adding a hanger on the back. I may add this one to Etsy or just hang it in my house, haven't decided yet.

you can also use something else to protect it other than resin thank you

You can use spray varnish but you need multiple coats to get a good finish.

This is pretty! Is the point of the kilz to prevent absorption? Would Polyacrylic work the same if you want the wood to show?

Thank you! Yes, I use the Kilz for a waterproof barrier. I don't know if the polyacrylic will work but if it is waterproof when dry it should work.

I love how this turned out. Definitely looks like you need and airbrush or something small to blow the inks with. This is so pretty. What will you prime your canvas with? Gesso? I. Only asking because I primed a wood round with gesso to which I am going to use the Kilz now too because I used paint and had to scrape it as it didn’t turn out but noticed when cleaning it off that some of the gesso came off with it.

Thanks so much! 😊 I just used Kilz primer, no gesso. I did not have any issue with the primer pealing at all so maybe try it without the gesso.

Love it! Have you ever worked with acrylic inks? I have some but have not used them yet. I'm hoping they do what the alcohol ink does.

I use acrylic inks with the same colour tube paints. It brightens them and makes them darker. Alcohol inks for this are much cheaper.

I think if you primed it, that may work on laminate, but I cannot guarantee it. That is not something that I have tried.

This is really good! lovely color combination. very pleasing. can just get lost gazing into it. One question: While priming the wood, are brush marks visible? do they affect the end result in anyway? Thanks!

❤I love it, but how do you do the finishing. Which varnish can you place on top of the alcohol ink so that it stays nicely attached to the wooden panel? Thank you in advance

How do you do these safely? The only place I can do it is in my house now because it'd cold outside. If I opened a door would it be safe enough for my kids? I have a mask for myself but not everyone in the house.

Yeah I would open windows or a door and also maybe have a fan going to help remove the fumes.
