Alabama’s Little River Canyon has been called "the Grand Canyon of the South." And, indeed, it is one of the most dramatic physiographic features in the South.’ In 1985, Discovering Alabama featured Little River Canyon in one of the series’ earliest shows, drawing public attention to the unique natural attributes of the canyon and helping to win protective National Preserve status for a part of the canyon. In this program Discovering Alabama marks its 20th year anniversary by returning to Little River Canyon to examine the canyon’s current status and consider its future. (Televised in High definition, surround sound)

There is no substitute for seeing the canyon from a whitewater kayak. In the winter it is quite and beautiful. Now the locals see the value of the preserve, but that was not the case when it was proposed.

i went there as a child, it was awesome. there was an old cable car thing that looked ancient. i am planning on taking my wife there this year.

The entire Little River to include 300 feet each side needs to be protected. No Private docks, dams or swimming pools should be allowed to destroy nature.

I wonder what it would take to further protect this place from development. Just visited this past weekend and was saddened to see the houses that have popped up, both close to the East rim and over DeSoto falls. A disgrace to the beauty of nature to put such crude structures overlooking the canyon.

Screw your "take public land views". The government takes and takes and takes and then rents the use to see what the public owns. I am glad some folks are able to build on the East side of the river, the homes are absolutely gorgeous. Us locals used to be able to just go for a swim, now you have to get up so early to beat the out of town tourist (only so many are allowed to park by the road in OUR park). The government owns over a quarter (28%) of all the land in America. A freaking quarter of land (almost one third) is controlled by the government and you want more. Since the land is so valuable on the East side, only wealthy folks are able to purchase it for the most part. There is no mobile parks next to the canyon, there is no pollution problems and never has been, but this video harps it up like private ownership is killing it's business. The government just hates not having 100% control and the government jobs it creates. If it could, most conservationist would vote to have the government own all the land, and you would have to grovel to have privilege to go anywhere.

Yeah I went earlier this year and I was very disappointed with the amount of houses I saw along the canyon edge. Also wish this was a National Park and not a Preserve.
