This will be the first of 3 episodes on why physics is simple. This episode I will give some simple examples of the power of simply thinking of the scale of things and ignoring details.. something physicists can do but many other disciplines can't. #5minphysics

There was a cartoonist from Australia talking on the Coast to Coast AM show with George Noory. He had a theory that the Earth had weaker gravity, and was smaller in size 65 million years ago. He said that a Tyrannosaurs Rex had a head that weighed about the same as a motorcycle and that in todays gravity it would snap off the creatures neck, so gravity had to be less back then.

That's why all the animals living duiring subsequent ice ages were so big, compared to their modern counterparts - mammonth to elephant, wooly rhino to African rhino, cave bear to bear, Irish elk to deer, etc. Heat is produced by body mass (thus volume), but is dissipated through skin (thus surface). If a mammoth was twice as big, as an elephant, it was able to conserve its heat twice as efficiently (R^3/R^2=8/4=R=2) in extremely cold climate.

At some point in my growing understanding of the universe, my feelings changed when I look up at the starred night sky. I used to glance at it as nonchalantly as I gazed at cobwebs on my ceiling - "ah, there it is and I can’t reach it." Now, when a look up, I’m overwhelmed by a strange sense of sadness, loneliness, futility, all compounded by the reality of not knowing and for what purpose it’s all there. I think one of the things that prevents people from “believing” in things like evolution or the Big Bang is that the size of stars and galaxies, atoms and particles, and lengths of time that are talked about are simply incomprehensible to normal people - our reference frames are vastly under ranged. When I stand outside, I can estimate what is 10 feet away, maybe even 100. When I close my eyes, I can imagine a place one mile away, maybe 10; some truck drivers might imagine 100 miles away. The same goes for time, I can imagine a year ago, or 10. But a million? A billion? A trillion? Even these words work against us, they all have the same number of letters and syllables but one is 1000 times larger and another is 1000 times larger than that. These dimensions of time, space and size are just completely incomprehensible. We try to reconcile this with simulations. If a golf ball were the nucleus of a hydrogen atom, the electron cloud would be about .8 miles away. But that only works if you can imagine or visualize a mile and it gets worse with time. The range of our consciousness is just too narrow. How can we expect people to understand these things when they can only visualize a grain of salt to a mile and from a split second to a lifetime?

I couldn't help but draw parallels from your past 5 minute physics videos on the energy of empty space, when you touched on the pressure of a cows skin increases non linearly to that of the area, this is what you were emphasizing in your physics of an expanding universe video when space itself expands, but I think you emphasized it much better; even if unintentional with our dairy friends. Excellent video, stay safe and please continue putting these out. I love them and it's going to greatly help my students while we're 'distant learning'.

I thought surface area to volume ratio limited the size of land mammals (Elephants) due to the HEAT of cell respiration, not what he said...
@ArizonaRegime
@ArizonaRegime 4 года назад
chris howard two things can be true at once, which one of these factors is the limiting factor that takes precedence, or who’s limit is hit first, would be an interesting question to answer. I’m also interested in non Mammalian species, insects for example, they scale due to the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere, this is why insects from the Jurassic are gargantuan. Do their body masses scale linearly to the amount of oxygen or do they follow a square or cube function?
@chsmt19
@chsmt19 4 года назад
@@ArizonaRegime I see...and he did mention marine mammals (Blue Whale reached largest limit in the sea) & there it is also temperature because water takes heat out faster. Interior cells can't cook themselves as quickly, so that's why they can get bigger than elephants
@ArizonaRegime
@ArizonaRegime 4 года назад
Given that fact, wouldn’t you expect the largest of animals to live in polar environments, and you don’t necessarily see that. I’d guess that blue whales grow to massive sizes primarily due to the more uniform forces being spread over their bodies being submarine versus land mammals.

Dr. Krauss: I have a question on an unrelated topic. Your debates on atheism was one of the reasons my atheist beliefs got strengthened. I believe science can or will answer most of “how” questions about universe, e.g., how does a black hole form? But do you think it will ever answer “why” questions? E.g., why does the nature and its laws exist? No matter how much we explore, we can never be satisfied with any answer to “why” questions. Even if god appears and explains why everything exists, the answer cannot satisfy us. So, our pursuit is only to find answers to “why”?
@lkrauss1
@lkrauss1 4 года назад
all 'why ' questions presume a purpose.. but there need not be a purpose, and therefore many why questions may simply have no meaning.
@Drew0Ranger
@Drew0Ranger 4 года назад
@@lkrauss1 Thank you for the reply. Yes, logically it makes sense that the question has no meaning if there is no purpose for the existence of the universe. English is not my native language, so I am not sure if I am asking you this right. I just wonder why (sorry, I do not know what other word I should use here except for 'why') anything exists; the universe, the reality, etc. Even if nothing exists, I guess I would have wondered why nothing exists :) of course, I wouldn't exist myself then to ask that question, but the question itself may exist. Anyhow, if the question is confusing or if you think it has no meaning, you may ignore it. The whole universe and reality is simply a puzzle to me; not sure if I will ever have an answer that can satisfy me. Thank you for your time though. Have a great day.
@lkrauss1
@lkrauss1 4 года назад
@@Drew0Ranger thinking about such things is always confusing, and if time had a beginning so cause and effect is not relevant at that time, then all our usual thinking would need to be changed then.. so don't feel bad if you are confused. :)

It's kind of sad that you have to make a video about high school Physics :(
@CapitalJ2
@CapitalJ2 4 года назад
It's sad that many people didn't even take high school physics where I live, myself included, which is why videos like this are interesting and important. Some just forgot, and some never learned. Here in the U.S. in the State of Florida, we were only required to take earth science, biology, and chemistry. Physics was optional, and since school was often boring to me because of the way the information was taught and presented, and partly due to my laziness, I decided not to take it. I've regretted it ever since. I'm constantly intrigued and overwhelmed at the same time when I try to learn about physics myself on the internet. Lawrence Krauss's lectures and books have helped me greatly in my attempt to understand complex and simple physics concepts.
