At 14:34 hours the Syosset FD was alerted to multiple calls reporting a building fire at the Jack and Rose Florists - 300 Woodbury Rd. Chief 5800 was quickly on scene and transmitted a working fire. The fire spread across the street to a large area of brush. Numerous hand lines were operated on the brush and the fire building. Two tower ladders also operated on the fire building. The fire went to 5 alarms and was brought under control in about 3 and a half hours

There are homes in the UK that have vinyl siding, it isn't strictly an American thing. Also, roofing tiles and shingles are two separate things. Asphalt shingles are the affordable option, but some people on Long Island opt for metal roofing due to the heavy snows there.

It just amazes me that when arriving at a building that is fully engulfed in flames, that the first thing the officer does not do is engage the deck gun and just pour water onto the fire with its 500 gallons on board. That is a great way to knock some of the fire down while a hydrant is being hooked up. They engage the deck gun AFTER pulling a 2" line and waiting a couple of minutes to charge the line. That time could be spent dumping water via the deck gun. Terrible fire ground management by the first arriving company's and the officers on board the pumper trucks. Deck guns are there for a reason.
@certeric33
@certeric33 Год назад
Deck gus are a great tool. Just a FYI that 500 gallon tank would only last for about a minute with the deck gun and no water supply. Couple things to look at. 1 location of hydrant 2 what other properties are in danger or life. Fire on both sides of the road. They dump the tank attacking a building that is already a loss and the fire on the other side shifts direction and now endangering the firefighters. Keep in mind neither of us " you and i" was there to know the whole situation. I have been a firefighter for close to 15 years. There is a time when deck gun would be used first. But you need to have replacement water before you use it or life is endangered. It's easy to say they could do this or that from watching a video. I can guarantee when we watch videos of our calls and debrief we talk about the what we could have done and learn for future incidents that arise. No call is the same and going to a location could change day to day. Nobody is perfect, we all make errors. One last thing. The first in officer has to evaluate the scene. Wires are down, fire both sides, finding a hydrant that works. Many things has to be done so they are safe to do the mission. You jump the gun your life or the victims life can be at risk. A building can be replaced not a life. It sucks to lose a business or a home. And there is times we, including myself, blames our self for the loss. But we can only do our best. And if you say different, well wait till your in a situation that causes a loss and get blamed for it from someone who has no idea what happened, only from watching a video. And probably not even experienced in that job. This is not to target you directly. It is for those who only complain because they think it is easy to do from a tv.

It didn’t help that they had a hoarding situation and a lot of leafs and debris along with the wind that fueled the fire. That’s why you have to keep your property clean if you live near woods incase a fire breaks out to keep your house from burning down. Or if your house catches on fire to stop burning leaves and embers from burning everything around. A shame to happen to anyone.

There were hydrants right there and to make it easier a 2 1/4 was pulled off by one engine on one side & the deck gun was used on the other side of the section of woods. Made pretty quick work of it, and definitely didn't have to worry about a rekindle.

It has absolutely nothing to do with every engine catching a hydrant and supplying water to the fire. But it does has everything to do with manpower from those 25 departments that showed up. Not only do you have a large structure fire with exposure problems but you have a quick spreading brush fire as well. Both of these alone are very labor intensive, let alone going together at the same time. They both require a large mutual aid response (Manpower and water supply)
