This is Part 2 of a 3 part build Featuring the 5th gen 4runner that two men separated by the entire continent of the USA Both built. The same truck for the same reasons, Not being able to pay a pro to do a solid job both these guys took it it into their own hands and built up 2 TRD PRO into the sickest, best built reliable offroading overlanding rigs youll see on the internet. Long Story short this particular Build Oleg's and My own will beat any comparable build Land Cruiser!

I have an 80 and 5th gen. I cannot fathom the amount of money and work that these guys have put in to get the 4runners to the same level as the 80 is with just bolt ons.

The best rigs are built not bought! Built by the driver to be driven. More often than not the rig that goes the farthest through the hardest is not the one that has been dropped with a pile of cash at some shop. The best of the best is not purchased. Is created. Built! Any make model year or type of vehicle can be built into the best thing out there it does not matter what you drive just how it's built. Although it's nice to have friends with similar vehicles no two rigs are ever the same.

If you have the mechanical aptitude and the ability to do the work you are a mechanic, it has been said that mechanics are born not trained, I've done all my own work since I owned my first car at age eleven and have known trained mechanics, I wouldn't allow to work on any of my vehicles. That said I do read service manuals and mechanical manuals and have taken correspondence courses, all good information and still learning after 63 years of wrenching. I used quarter inch diamond plate to make the skid plates for my off-road jeep, nice how they slide over the rocks, and I don't get hung up on things, not to mention the fact that they lowered my center of gravity.

So much money and time into these vehicles it's crazy lol. It looks like he's running stock brakes though? I feel like with all of that weight and big tires and doing these long trips getting better brakes would be a benefit but maybe there's clearance issues that come along with that too. I hope I can get my 92 Hilux Surf 2.4l diesel working this winter for spring not sure if I want to dump the money into rebuilding the engine, or getting a new engine in it, or selling it at a discount and using the money I would spend on it plus what it sells for to just buy another one.

@SandyCats I was at a car show here in Denver awhile ago and there was a company there that had these cool brakes that were designed for like trophy truck stuff with their own little radiators kind of like a small transcooler that cooled the brake which I thought was cool. I'll have to try and remember the brand I forgot who it was.

Portals do take stress off the shaft as it gives it a better angle. Portals do not increase travel at all though… so not great. Most importantly with portals your keeping the factory weak links (steering rack and tie rod) and being forced to go to 37s because of height increase. In the end that translates to 37s on factory steering which will break parts fast in actual off-road. Therefore…. I’d only run portals with the RCLT kit due to stronger steering with proper geometry but that lift height will force me up to 39” tires which I don’t really want to run on an overlander yet.

Loved the video but my question in my head was as good as the 4Runner is why not start with the 200 series? The 5.7 has more power than a supercharged 4.0 and its a stronger frame and takes the added weight better since its bigger components. Again I like the build but I had just thought why not start with a more capable platform?

200 with no miles wasnt avail this 2019 was and the build platform was good to go.

Personally, I wanted to start with a zero mile rig. The LC200 had much mess aftermarket support and much more electronics/smart systems. That’s what turned me away from it… going big like this I’d be dealing with codes all day long (assuming). Even my wife’s 21 4Runner was a harder build due to the upgraded computers… and it’s put me in limp mode on the trail once. The 19 and prior 4Runners and GX’s seam to be the sweet spot for an overkill build. I do sometimes regret not doing this to a GX instead but than my gas mileage would be like 7MPG due to the full time AWD system.

@@SandyCats my 2011 200 depending on load out (7-8k lbs) on 35s is 14-16 on the highway and 10-12 in the city stock gears and it only got better when I swapped to 4.88 gears but it’s not been long enough to give accurate mpg but it’s about 1 better all around
