Yes. 😅 I suspect TGATB is a good curriculum in a lot of ways, but it seems like everyone seems to use it. We're a Sonlight family for the time being over here.
Would love to see a video on how your organize your day, and work in each subject. I’m debating on doing history one semester then science the net or taking turns throughout the week. Also love the idea of tying in geography with history- it’s so easy to do too much!
I don't know what ages you're teaching but the good thing about BJU Press Heritage Studies, grade 3, is it's a one-semester course so you'd have the second semester to do something else. Grades 4 and beyond are meant to take the entire year but you could definitely spread it out and fit other things in on alternate days.
We love Indescribable! We also have How Great is our God! I highly recommend! We use and love TT! Did I miss where you talked about TG&TB history update?! I am lost for history with my three boys this year. Many ideas...but no decisions yet.
I don't remember if I did an update of their history but we ended up not using it again. What ages are your 3 boys and are you wanting to do group style for history?
Hi Becky! We love the Indescribable Devotional. ❣️ I have been wanted to put a curriculum together for geography as well, but I am worried I am going to miss something. But watching this gave me courage to just do it! Thanks for all of your videos. You’re an inspiration. Have a beautiful day. 🌸
Can't wait to try the heritage studies distance learning. Thanks for sharing about BJU's sale in another video totally picked it up for 25% off :-) I'll have a 5th grader and a kindergartner this coming school year.
Oooh... can you do a longer flip through of the handwriting program? I’ve been trying to find sample pages for that book online, and there’s not many out there! By the way, TGATB grammar and geography cards that are sold with the upper LA levels are FANTASTIC for learning states. My 5th and 3rd grader had a blast using them this year. After we learned all the states, I gave them a magnetic US puzzle (made by Learning Resources, I think) and let them “construct” the US on our white board. It was a blast!
I love those geography cards from TGATB! My oldest daughter uses them for high school! If you follow me on Instagram, I'll try to remember to do a flip-through of the book on there.
I know so little about BJU, could you do a video on how the history distance learning works? I’ve been curious but every time I research BJU I get overwhelmed and it seems like too many parts and I give up 😂 and I buy curriculum just to look at it! I let my kids try it out and they can choose. So far TGTB wins on all subjects. 😃
It does seem like a lot of parts in the beginning but once you get it organized, it really isn't bad at all. get a video lesson guide that tells you what your kids are watching/doing each day. They have their student workbook and textbook and you will have a packet of "handouts" that are things not included in their workbook that their online teacher might tell them to reference. Other than that, everything is online, even the gradebook.
I was home schooled for 4th 5th and 6th grade with a online program called alpha omega complete online (even projects online) school no textbooks christian based too I even got to take a course all on the bible kind of as an elective this was all circa early 2000s
We love BJU, we'll be starting English and Math 4 in the summer. I find the teacher guides so helpful, especially the cd-rom and that the chapters alternates. Not super wordy and my kiddo can work independently. I also purchased some Evan Moor books on Amazon, then saw on their actual website they have free downloads and you can purchase their books to download. We have yet to try BJU science, wanted to finish up what we already had. Would you say there were plenty of experiments to do? Thanks for another great video!!!!
You really can't go wrong with BJU Press! Their science has enough experiments but not "too many." I'm not science experiment kind of mom so I like not having a crazy thing to do every week. lol
I know this is an old video and the school year is over, but would you mind telling me how you scheduled all of this in for your daughter? Did she do all of the L/A, handwriting and extra work books every day?
I love homeschool curriculum videos! I remember you used Jady A geography print out that you got from Teachers Pay Teachers and I was wondering how that worked for your daughters to memorize States? I just bought it for my daughter and my son and I just have to laminate everything. Quick question about the history, is that US. history or is it basically telling about people from the church in history? The Catholic curriculum we currently use for history teaches a bit about history depending on the grade level but it's basically people in the church or from the church like saints that they are teaching about and how they relate to history. I'm looking for more of a traditional US history.
I did buy Jady A's program but ended up not using it because she only teachers that there are 4 regions of the U.S. and I like to teach that there are 5. That's why I purchased the program that I did for this year because she teachers that there are 5. As for the BJU Press history, it does have some Biblical truths in it but it's definitely a traditional U.S. history curriculum.
Thanks so much! Not "too much" and some of the times that religion is referenced is in the teacher's manual and you could skip that part if you wanted to. Other times the student workbook will have sentences that are about Biblical truths but not every lesson.
Hi! I love your curriculum videos. I see you have BJU English 4 for your 5th grader. Do you plan to keep just going to each new level after you finish the current one, or do you plan to "catch up" sometime? I have my 2 boys, grades 4 and 7, in BJU English 3 and 6 this year because we've been kind of relaxed about grammar and writing the last few years. Does it matter to have them a grade level below?
Hi! I'm so glad you like my curriculum videos! My plan is to just keep doing what we're doing and not trying to "catch up." What's most important is that my daughter is learning and not so much the number written on a book. Plus, the good thing about BJU's English that I've noticed so far is that they cycle through the same material before adding more concepts or making previously-taught concepts more difficult, if that makes sense.
@@aplacetonest Thank you for your reply! The more years I homeschool, the more comfortable I am about just moving ahead and not worry too much about the grade on a book.
That’s exactly how I feel. Now, if I had a high-schooler that was doing level 3, that would be a different story but as a rule, the levels don’t matter too much.
@@cc-fx1cf Since P.E. is physical education, you're probably not going to find a book for that. When my daughter was taking health/P.E., for the physical education part I made a RU-vid playlist of workouts for her and we also counted it when she went roller skating.
Hi Becky! I just saw this video- I was wondering how you like the Handwriting program now that you are well into your school year? I was thinking of trying this for my two oldest for next year (they will be 4th and 8th- and they were not taught cursive in public school- first year homeschooling). This year we used TGTB level 3 handwriting which is ok but I think they need more practice. We are a secular home school so can you tell me how much Biblical references there was? Appreciate these videos so much!
Silly question....Does your daughter do everything you showed, every day? Six years later, I am still having trouble fitting subjects in and still having time in the day to do other things that need to be done - I am always on the lookout for schedules that others follow for ideas! Thanks!
For the most part, yes, although we do often "fall behind" with science. I try to do that several times per week but if we are running short on time, I do the other things first and science comes last.
I was already using BJU Press for my youngest's english before discovering TGATB and since it was working for her, I saw no reason to switch her to something else.
Curious to know why you chose English and Heritage Studies 4 instead of 5? Asking because I accidentally purchased English 4 instead of 5. Not sure if I should return or if English 4 will be just as good for my 5th grader.
For Heritage Studies, we are backpedaling a bit from "getting behind" with The Good and the Beautiful's history curriculum. For English, it's just because we take our time and don't stress about finishing a book in a year so that's why we're a level "behind." The good thing is, with BJU's English, English 4 and English 5 cover pretty much the same material, just a bit more in-depth.
Yes, it is Christian-based. I’m not really sure what to recommend that isn’t because we’ve always used a Christian-based language arts program. I wish I could be of more help.
