You can tell, and hear the difference. Mr Simmons is about musicianship, not dancing, and I'm only saying this because of where he just came from but you certainly hear Southern in them (TSU). But they sound really good. Great job, Kedrick Redding, and Mr Simmons 💪🏽💯🙏
Simmons is a seriously talented arranger! Welcome back to the band conversation TXSU! It won’t be long before TXSU will be turning heads and probably chopping some too! Lol!
Gotta roll with Texas Southern on this one. Size wont win a battle but balance, arrangements, style of play and clarity will definitely get you a W and TxSU displayed all of those qualities better than PV. TxSU just sounds like a more cohesive group. W = TxSU
Well, it's definitely disappointing to see such a strong tradition diminish. Looks like Tim Zachery needs to open up the George Edwards book and step the game up.
@@alfreddawson3765 I’ve been saying that since he stepped on the scene. I like the things he has done for the band, but to seemingly dismiss the previous book is crazy. If he opens up Prof. Edwards book, it’ll be a problem.
All I can say is anyone who didn't see this coming was in denial. Brian IS A MAATER ARRANGER and as a Band Director and Arranger being able to arrange for what you have puts you at an advantage. Great Job TxSU
There’s some haters in the comment section and that’s cool! No need to debate back and forth. Brien Simmons is very well respected arranger in the band world. Keep that same energy when your favorite band gets shamed. I’m not a TXSU fan but I recognize greatness…
Not being bias just because i'm from N.O. , I like the aggression and power from PV. but i gotta give this to TxSU.their power and arrangements and style is better imo.
Fuck what everybody talking about.... Do Ya'lllllllll YOU HEAR MEEEEE !!!! New Musiccc, New Sound, Aggressiveeeeeeee IKTFRRRRRR🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥COME ON CHANTT SOUND TF OFFFF GO OFFFFF🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Just make sure yall watch each other and balanceeee I can't stress this enough. Looking good and sound even BETTERR!!!!!! I'm a Proud Alumna PVAMU Class of 2020 little daddy 😌🔥💯 LETS NOT FORGET
Ocean, I'm proud of you guys. This Ocean sounds way different than the Ocean I marched in 2003-04. Now if yall can get to the 200-250 size we had back then that would be nice. Keep it up and best wishes to the new band directors at TxSU
We sounded great then, just not as much old Ocean style in what we played. Landon Taylor arrangements were much fuller and more modern without the alternating trumpets. My hat's off to Simmons and the arrangers for reaching back to the Butler-Thornton-Jackson era. I would never expect someone from su to respect another band's roots. Kudos.👏🏿
@@TheAlexandereands no it isn't. Yall all over RU-vid claiming people stole your stule...never seen Ocean of Soul or old Ocean of Soul before but steady making the same lie. Mostly su way is to just flat out disrespect other programs. This is the first time I've seen an su grad have respect for another organization.
@@sordidC then my dear sir you don't know Su graduates! It was a SU graduate at Langston College in Oklahoma it was a s u college at Lane College in Tennessee when you don't know just say you don't know!
The two master arrangers at TXSU, starring Mr. Eric French, the arranger of NOASB and Mr. Brian Simmons, the arranger of LLI/Regulators and SU!! Getting some flashbacks over playing Blinding Lights w NOASB. Kudos to both arrangers!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The best fifth between these two in a while. A few more trumpets and tubas and TXSU will be the complete package. Even with the 11 tubas they were pushing the sound. It's amazing what Brian Simmons and staff has done in just a few weeks. PV is more aggressive, but in doing that they have lost a little bit of what made them stand out in the SWAC. Balance, Intonation, and pitch were always on pitch. It was the arrangements that let the band down which is still the case but some balance issues as well. Tubas were sometimes covered on selections. I will give a slight edge to TXSU. I can only imagine where Brian will have this band in a season or two
I wish I could disagree with you. The bigger sound doesn’t seem to be the better sound. PV for life but very good job TxSU. Blasting notes is not music. Do not over play your embouchure and back off the tempo. I wish bands would play more to the conductor and not the other band. Give me fat harmony and good dynamics. Big fan of big bands.
@@fromfeartofaith8491 thanks for the honesty bro.. as an SU alum.. I told cats months ago TSU will surprise people with Simmons coming over .. dude is just that good! He's a teacher of music .. the proof is in the pudding .. as you can see!
What made PV stand out in the SWAC was our song selection. We specialized in New Jacl Swing, Jazz and Tunes from the late 70s/early 80s. All of that was gone with Prof Edwards. You say PVs Arrangements aren't up to par, yet TxSU is playing half notes out of tune? You say PV isn't balanced but the screamers can be heard just as loud as the Tubas? Go home, you're drunk. PV clearly won't this battle and it's clear that most people don't even understand how to judge a band battle in the first place. TxSU still has plenty of work to do, and all PV has to do is pull out any tune from the old book, "Knights by Knights, Getaway, Tribute to Bob Marley, Heartbreak Hotel". They were all standards in my day, but neither of these showbands is technical anymore. It's all about intonation, balance and clarity and TxSU doesn't have it. most of yall can't hear it, and it's a shame.
I’m fw PV power and aggression they’ve been missing that. I’m glad to see TxSU back with some actual arrangements. Simmons is gonna do some great things. Good battle overall.
This was a battle 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Wish I was there, but I’m here in MIA ready to see JSU & FAMU go head to head. Energy from both bands and TXSU good to see you back‼️
Glad to see that PV has found that aggression factor and TXSU finally has some actual arrangements. TXSU has already improved so much and I’m very optimistic about what they can become, but PV with that blend and intonation is unmatched brah.
Coming from a PV Alum, both bands were amazing, even better in person. I found myself saying a few times last night “TSU actually sounds really good.” PV was powerful per usual but TSU came and did what needed to be done as well. Usually this would be a blow out. Not the case this year. 💜💛
People tend to want to equate volume with the W. TxSU arrangements definitely proved that volume means nothing when arrangements don't follow. Both bands sounded good but TxSU definitely gets the W.
Well damn. Simmons going to TXSU was the move for sure. They sound damn good and that boy put his whole leg in those arrangements. Sounding like the Ocean from back in the day. Great job both bands though. #LuvDaBoom #crab07 #musicappreciation
It's going down Saturday October 2nd Southside slabfest at MacGregor park Houston tx 4PM calling all sides of the htown n surrounding cities to come out n enjoy the show
It's looking like the "Murk City Classic" might be '86 style this year. Ocean sounding hella good. They've always been a force but it's good to see them experimenting with the 'arrangement x balance x power' formula. The Ocean 'bout to be a premiere dynasty in SWACbandland, U.S.A
@@alfreddawson3765 I am pretty sure the Ocean and the whole TxSU staff and university as a whole , do not give a shit about you hatin on them lmao. Have several of seats sir.
Where TF have you been for the past 20 years then ? 2005-2015 was all OCEAN 2016/2017/2018/2019 - OCEAN. 2021 - OCEAN. GO WATCH CLIPS BEFORE MAKING DUMB ASS COMMENTS LIKE THIS. BET YET , go through this PV channel and view the footage.
I feel like the new leadership has kept TX identity intact and its commendable and impressive. I also like what I've heard from PV. I wish this direction would've been combined with some of their more recent sized bands.
TxSU sounding good!! they have really CLEANED IT UP!!! Motion LOOKS F*CKING AMAZING! Dancing CLEAN and with CONFIDENCE they have! PV is good too, they definitely are aggressive this year
Im all PV but I gotta give this to TxSu. I like that PV is crankin, but the arrangements gettin kinda simple and dry in my opinion. Hopefully they bring the groove factor they're known for throughout the season. They sound really good tho. TxSu is gonna be beast!! I look forward to more of them as well!!
I give the slight edge to TXSU because of arrangements and balance. I’m just missing the Tubas from the Ocean. Keep that TXSU tradition of creasing tubas. PV is loud, but not balanced. I didn’t hear a lot of trumpets. The arrangements need work. Good battle. Both bands are going to give hell this year. 👍🏾
Well I kinda knew txsu was going to give a better battle. Brian is just a hell of a arranger. His works shows in all his arrangements. TXSU already had the power they just needed a fire araffn
Both bands Is Going To Be A Problem Pv with the Power and Aggression and Texas Southern With Great Arrangements And Great Execution! Pv you krank all day but let’s hear some fifth quarter music rather than raps throughout the fifth! Texas Southern got the edge here!
@@houseofbuck007 yeah I’m loving this Ocean the sound is with finesse but that power house sitting across from them is Dangerous better watch out because when they clean it up they is going to be hell on wheels! Pv sound good too but it’s seems like they thought the Ocean Was Going To Just Krank Like what Txsu does all the time but Brian had other plans that day.
PVs trombones and euphoniums smashing. Tubas and trumpets need to step it up. For years PVs tubas sat at the top of the SWAC but last couple of years they've been mediocre. People's biases in the comments are showing. The Battle was kinda even with the slight edge to PV, but tsu has some nice arrangements and well balanced sound. Hopefully PV pulls out some ballads for the next 5th they have. I'm really tired of all these blowing songs during the 5th save that for the game.
First time I’d ever thought I’d say PV arrangements sound basic and plain. I was disappointed at PV performance, but still have love for y’all. Standing ovation for TxSU!!!! Hats off!!!!! Y’all deserve all the flowers!!!!! That was a great show!!!! Wish they would have let it be longer….
Txsu took the W. That size stuff don't matter at all, these people arrangements are definitely on another level right now. Pv wasn't bad but it seem like they didn't have a WOW factor
Brian Simmon and Trenton Hunter one of my favorite arranger duo right now, beside Mr.Warren ...Damn I can't make 😫 😆lol this up.... Keep that same momentum.
I knew TxSU was going to be a problem when I heard Simmons was there. His arrangements make them better. If they start adding size the SWAC is in trouble.
Its a mix of the both Southern and Jackson style... Brian Simmons Su alumni and one of their assistants is a JSU alum... because those tenors plucking like WT ... I'm here for it ! Its like they making a perfect band !
Both bands did great I give the W to txsu .Can somebody help me understand how txsu the biggest swac school but has one of the smaller bands in the swac
Well it's a long story... I'll try to make it short, lol. IF you're old enough to remember. The Ocean had an incident in Japan back in, I think, 2000. Since that incident, the band numbers and support for the school in general, especially with all the front office drama, dwindled. In addition to that, the band programs in the city have suffered a great deal. Houston used to be, and in some ways still is, a musician oasis. But if you look at all the feeder schools, especially high school, the bands are minimal. I don't think any show style bands are breaking 50-60 pieces. Definitely not 100. My daughter marches for Willowridge and it was sad to see them they way they are right now. And not to mention my alma mater, Worthing, they haven't been The Marching 100 since 2003.
Here is the recipe....Gotta have funding. Now if funding is the problem...you have to do showcases...band camps...exposure will get you back quickly. The staff MUST recruit. It's like recruiting for football...you have to have something that answers the question....WHY COME TO TSU?!?!
@@MRRAY84 for the last 20 years show bands have been trending better at hispanic schools than the black schools...especially in houston. Recruiting does help though. PV doesnt really care where they recruit from. I went to Eisenhower in houston...which was at the time a one of the best corps bands in the state and im pretty sure PV got more than a few from there. Its how their size blew up in the late 90s. TxSU needs to start doing the same. The black schools in houston dont even really have the size to even have bigger bands now.
@@bryfunkenstein same thing with Cookman... We recruited from Corp bands also. Here is a little tidbit... ATLANTA. You find tubas and trumpet players all through Black Hollywood.
@@MRRAY84 Japan incident was 1992. And it osnt the reason. Ocean was 5-6 company fronts from 2001-2005, 3.5 for awhile and back to 5 2015-2020. 150-180 instruments. The band at times is small when the recruitment was down kr administration just didn't care on funding. Our hbcu is large because we offer more majors, more intensive grad programs likely school and pharmacy. It's too much to do in Houston so recruiting has to step up and change focus on the kind of student. Add to that that TSU no longer accepts alot of people because of our standards and THAY is about to get a bit stricter as outreach grows from academic programs under the new president. As long as Simmons keeps things Ocean of Soul syylistically, and utilizes the city of Houston venues and the attractiveness of going to school in this megacity, he will have much success.
The Ocean showed some very nice arrangements while PV's seemed kinda lacking. Look forward to their progression and I'd love to see more support for both bands. This is from a proud Juke supporter and former member.
This was a REALLY good battle!! BUT I constantly find myself being pissed with PV having all these tubas and sounding like 5…Now they sound like 3 at times. This is a big issue that needs to be fixed or switch some of them to baritone or trombone something they’ll produce more on cause at this point the strength isn’t in the numbers obviously..
@@nedhat It’s definitely not exaggerated. Go look at that 5th against southern in i think 17 when they had all them on one side and they wasn’t making no noise. This has been the case for them for a while. You can watch anybody that reacts to them and they always say tubas I need a lil more lol
Quit reaching TXSO has always been loud with less folks than any other band so its nothing new, they just have better arrangements and not just cranking
@@TrayjsuRush you sir are absolutely correct, but that doesn't explain why Pee Vee sound is so lacking 🤔 for every Brass instrument player Txsu has, Pee Vee has double yet in still there really isn't much of a difference in sound volume.
