Our 5X8 cargo trailer is now an off-grid simple living camper! See how we converted it in just eleven minutes! Actually, it took about a month, but with time-lapse technology, we are happy to share the transformation with you in one short video.
We purchased this used cargo trailer from a fish company and used it to haul wood and outdoor equipment for many years. The idea to convert the trailer came to us this past summer. It’s not always easy to find building materials where we live in Northern Canada, so by the time we had everything we needed, we only had about a month to finish the project before the snow would fall.
And finish it we did! See for yourself how the very first night we used the trailer as a camper, Northern lights danced above us! What a way to celebrate the completion of this project!
Don't forget to check out our other videos about simple living in a yurt in Yukon Canada.
**Our inspiration for the trailer conversion came from watching Joel Trembley's RU-vid video "5x8 Cargo Trailer to Off Road Camper Conversion -DIY Off Grid Overland Build *TIMELAPS*" Thanks Joel!

A great build. We are getting ready to do one. Got a used one and cannot wait. It is about the same size. We are using that little space where you put fold out shelf as cabinet and counter. Putting our stove top there. Port a potty under it. We have to add a/c for we are in Fl. Thank you for sharing. I hope you go full blown on site. Ordered windows off E-bay. Also, escape window. These were windows taken out of new RV builds. Also, brought a small on demand water heater. Its for dishes but are also making an area to shower by door. Doggie foldable bath and will put a track on roof for shower curtain. Peace!

You've done a really nice job of converting your cargo trailer into your compact travel cabin. About the only other things I would consider would be to insulate the side and rear doors. Subscribed.

Nice Job.... I am in the process of converting an 8x16 v-nose cargo trailer into an RV and Mobile Sign Shop. I am just starting the walls and cabinet construction. I just sold a 15-passenger shuttle bus that I lived in for 3 years and traveled out west during the winters. I had to sell the shuttle bus because I purchased a large format color printer to make contour cut decals/stickers, koozies, t-shirts, magnetics, banners, mousepads, etc. The large format color printer would have taken up a lot of storage space so I needed to get something bigger. I did a complete conversion series on the shuttle bus from the ground up and now am doing a new series on the cargo trailer conversion. They are on my YT channel.

Nice build out. I just picked up a 5x8 3 door cargo trailer and i'm in the process of building it. I want to make a futon type bed that is a couch and then you can pull out a section to double the area and lay out the futon pad. I'm looking for ideas to make that happen. I like your tiny kitchen and it didn't take much space, space it at a premium when it's a 5x8.

Great job! It looks as if you put furing strips beside the foam board and over top of the foam board? Would you please explain exactly how and where you fastened furing strips? Also wondering if you screwed the pine tongue and groove to the furing strips or used a brad nailer? Thanks
@tntnaturecon
@tntnaturecon 2 года назад
Hi, thanks for watching! I needed something I can nail pine tongue groove on the walls and the ceiling , so I put strips beside the vertical metal pillars. I connected wood strips with metal pillars by screwing holes on the metal pillars and then connected wood strips with them. After this, I used minimum amount of screws to hold pine tongue groove as I was putting them together but I also used small nails (using a hand hammer) to nail them to the wood strips. Hope this makes sense. Good luck with your project!

How were you able to mount the vertical boards to the metal walls that the horizontal pine boards are fastened to? Did you glue them to the outside aluminum skin? How did you mount the pine boards to the ceiling? Really like the looks of the inside.

I made holes on metal frames and then attached (using screws) pieces of wood onto them. I did the same thing for mounting pine boards onto the ceiling as well by attaching shorter wood pieces to metal frames onto which you can nail your pine boards! It was a bit awkward to install ceiling all by myself... good luck with your project!

Pretty darn cool. My only concern/question is do you find you get a lot of flex in the walls by cutting the steel studding?
@tntnaturecon

Thanks. Actually I didn’t notice any flex while driving, so it must have been minimum amount of cutting the steel stud.

Do you need to add any structure around the window? Where you cut the metal vertical frames?
@tntnaturecon

Hello Brad Taylor. No I didn’t have to add anything around the window to reinforce it. It seems like there is no issue with this small window. Thanks for watching.

Awesome Job! I want to do the same, in the same size trailer. How is the insulation under the trailer holding up?
@tntnaturecon
@tntnaturecon 2 года назад
Hello WBOS72. We live in the Yukon and our trailer is currently under a lot of snow. We will need to dig it out in the spring and get it on the road again. We hope to have a better idea how the insulation holds up then. Thanks for watching and good luck with your conversion. 😊

1:50 Are those wrought iron bars on the ceiling ... strong enough to support a hammock? During the day, I need as much open space as possible.

I doubt they are strong enough for a hammock but it may be. We never tried ourselves but sounds like a good idea if it works!

Well done! about to do a 5x8 conversion myself so I've been watching as many RU-vid vids on the process as I can to get ideas. What is the interior height of yours?

Hello TheStuJames. Good luck with your conversion. Our trailer is 5’5”. I can just fit standing up. Tomohiro has to stand where the vent is… our dog Tenshi has no problems! 😉 Thanks so much for watching.

The interior looks really nice. I’ve been wanting to convert a cargo trailer as well after doing car camping for almost 3 months I learned I’d like to have more space :) Would you recommend where to buy the windows? Thanks & fun journeys to you!

Did you insulate the ceiling? That's half you heat loss. Also, get lithium batteries in stead of using lead-acid crap. They weigh about 1/3 that of lead-acid batteries. No fumes Was a game changer for me.

At 1:13 how are you installing the wood frame with metal bar ? Thank you in advance
@tntnaturecon
@tntnaturecon Год назад
Hello Mint hos, I attached the wood to the metal frames by drilling holes on both the metal bars and wood and then screwed them together. Hope this helps!

I've been thinking about doing this with my 12x6 but its only 5.5 in height so I bang my head getting in and out all the time now. STAY TO THE END PEOPLE
