Starting my '87 Chevy after 3 Years.
Hearing that old Detroit roar to life was like talking to a long-lost friend. Now I need to find an El Camino to stuff this boat anchor into!
Thanks to 1997cr80r for the suggestion

Being a Die Hard Chevy guy it makes me sad to see an old chevy sit like that, I wish I had a rolling chassis right now I would come scoop that truck right up and rebuild it from the frame up and put that lovely old lady to work!!!!!!!

My neighbor had a 94 GMC 1500 ext cab, he let it sit the harsh six month Edmonton winter with snow all around it, never drove it. He put a new battery in it, it only took about 5 cranks for the old 350tbi to start up. Drove it around the block no problem.

Not that anyone cares, but I let my 1980 Dodge W200 sit for what must have been at least four or five years, and when I finished sandblasting the frame and all that jazz, turned the key once and that MOPAR 318 sprung right to life! Complete tank!

The starter was rebuilt when I bought the truck, but I've got over 100,000 miles on it without issue. I used ether daily during the winter time to lighten the load on the starter & batteries. I even ran a hose from inside the cab thru the firewall into the airbox so I could give it a shot from the driver's seat. I'd let the glow plugs cycle, hit the throttle & begin cranking the engine *before* hitting the ether. She'd start immediately every time, no matter how cold it was.

I use to work at a steel shop in Va, one of our customers was a heavy equipment and heavy truck dealer, they would buy unwanted trucks and cut and shorted the frame rails off and weld the back together to make them more desirable. it might be worth the trip to your local truck dealer and repair shop to see what exactly they could do.

i just picked up a bone stock untouched 83 K30 SRW pickup YE9 thats sat on farm for ten years, just got it here couple nights ago on 80 mile trailer trip. got ravaged by mice out there, its gonna be fun time soon, repairing chewed wires and replacing lift pump and filters and hoses etc. was only parked and left to sit because clutch went out. i cant wait to be firing it up and hearing it soon, and then eventually driving it next year sometime.

Those motors don't die.We had an old beater with that same conversion 6.2 diesel. We drained the oil replaced with vegetable oil and it caused a run away. They we drain it again and ran with no oil. It ran ran ran around the farm to different fields for miles knocking like crazy. We almost got bored of it till finally it quit. Never seized though. Did the same with a Ford 300 straight 6 and it lasted longer with no oil. They were headed for the scrap yard anyway.

Cool. I bourgt 1 year ago A Chevy Van 1990 6,2 diesel for 5000 Dkk.(867,50 usd) including 125 liters og diesel i the tank, new Automatic Transmission with 2 almost 2 years gaurentee left, and it had run warm making the headgaskets fail. Put in 2 new gaskets, driving truly as an American Truck should. So happy with it. Henrik, Denmark.

+oldchevy4x4 I like the 6.5, but then it apparently takes a 6.5 for it to outperform a 4.3 at stock, lol. (At least ones of the same year) The later gasoline 4.3 V6s will decimate these diesels, lol. (late-1990s-to-present)

Neglected 6.2's can be cold-blooded. If you have 2 good batteries and the engine is well serviced (good glow plugs, no injector issues, etc.) you will be fine. Running Power Service in the fuel is a good idea. Keep it plugged in when you can (I know at work that's usually not an option). I drove this daily when we lived in NY (Buffalo)... she never left me stranded Also the company I contracted for had 2 trucks with 6.2's that were used year-round without issues.

I gotta say im not a chevy guy im a ford man but i appreciate all older trucks and cars and i think this would be a great project to redo if i was you i would find another 1 ton or better yet a 3/4 ton and transfer your cab motor axles and all that good stuff and make a flatbed for it id like to see this one come back to life.

Thank you for that. I wasn't expecting a 6.2 diesel my dad had a 3/4 ton with the 6.5 and that was a good truck. To bad about the frame. It started pretty good for years of sitting it was probably good for that engine to run a bit. I started a Jacobsen lawn tractor from the 70's to day that had been sitting for years to it's got a engine like your cub cadet that's 10hp and it's got stalk duel wheels in the back. Once again thanks!!!!

I have a 1982 Chevy Scotsdale body and frame wise these trucks weren't too bad (As long as you didn't live in the rust bucket) but I didn't think to much of the diesel motor's I can't tell you how many times I've cussed that motor out in the freazing weather trying to warm up the block. But I pulled it out and put a 442 oldsmoblie motor in it. It sound's so dumb but that motor is great in this truck. But great video!

10, 12 and 14 bolt are referring to a GM corporate axle. The number is the amount of bolts holding the cover on the differential. Basically the 10 bolt being the light duty, used in 1/2 ton trucks, the 12 bolt being in the middle, used in heavy 1/2's & 3/4 ton and the 14 bolt being the heavy axle; used in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.

I was wonderin when you were gonna stumble acrossed this vid! I had tried 1 .05 shim and it got worse. 2 .05s made it sound horrible, so I went back to the bare block. Maybe my alignment is off some... The block is cracked at 1 of the mounting bolts for the starter, and that hole was stripped. When I picked this truck up I oversized & helicoiled the offending hole, and chased the threads in the other, as they were a little screwy. The rear bracket is there, and tight. Thanks for watchin!!

One of the great things about these old mechanically injected & emissions free diesels is they will run on danged near anything. I used to work with a guy who cut his pump-diesel with filtered waste motor oil during the summer. I had concerns about that, considering the amount of aluminum & iron that finds its way into used oil, but he swore by it. Thanks for watching!
