If it dropped 82ft, it would be a tsunami the size of the subduction event in Japan. The sea floor dropped 90ft.

there is nothing strange about it. magnitudes are estimates and they always change as more sensors record it bouncing around the earth's crust and mantle

In 1988 we have a big one in Quebec city . I was in a merchant of guitars Richard Music at 7 pm approx . You can't imagine . When it was passed , I go outside , men , no lights , freaky .

I live in a bldg where we DO prepare- having emergency supplies, contact/communication means, food, extra water etc. I have been in fires and glad I can be self sufficient for a few weeks if need be. Having said that, you are right-----that is all one can really do.

Obviously, you assume that you will survive it. And that day, next day, for several months, safe drinking water, shelter, all the essential are on you, no tap water, no roads, no grocery or gas stations. There are a ton of things one can do to be better equipped, and prepared. If we do see "the big one". Start with 14 day supply water, and a filter to use to purify more. I can easily use a quart of water each day, just washing my hands.

Thanks- I have read that article and many others. I also have a pet and so must take that into consideration re water. Fortunately my building is very proactive on this issue and we have reams of information about sanitation, communication, food and water needs, etc. There is a great book on the subject (name I do not recall) about how communities prepare (tsunami drills etc) and how many lives can be saved by practicing and preparing. Reference the famous story of Rick Rescorla (sp)? who saved so many lives at 9/11 by drilling his company -safety exit drills- every month- the employees hated them- but how well it worked. Something like 92% (approx) survived from a very high floor. Having lived in fire zones I always keep my gas tank full, too. Many things we can do, IF we survive it. Still- enormously difficult circumstances.
