If your going to volume shoot, 308 is cheapest. If it’s a deer rifle and only going to see a box of ammo a year then that cost is basically irrelevant and you may as go with the modern cartridge that will make long distance shots a bit easier to adjust for in case that becomes relevant some day. For most people I don’t see it in any way necessary to trade in a rifle they already have to get a new cartridge, the performance difference within the ranges most people shoot just is not a big deal. However if your buying a new rifle because you want a new one or don’t have one, then a modern cartridge with higher BC bullets just makes sense. My wife is fairly new into guns so she got herself a 6.5CM, i however don’t have any rifles in new cartridges, my buck this year was taken with a 112 year old 30-30.

A necked down 30 TC to 6.5 is not exactly a modern cartridge, the PRCs would fit that description but then they shoot decades old calibers as well, maybe the 6.8 / 277 Fury?

Most deer kills are within 200 yards... there is no difference in bullet drop in that range and the 308 will out do the 6.5 even to 300 yards

In ontario 308 is more then enough power. You are lucky to have a 200 yard clear shot in ontario unless u hunt on a farm which 95 percent of people dont its most crown land bush. 30 06 is nice aswell but like i said 200 yards my 308 will drop anything and less recoil and more ammo availability so for me 308 by a long shot
@adamelam6385
@adamelam6385 Год назад
I like the 7mm-08 and .308 both. I think they are a little more effective on deer than the 6.5. My big reason why I use the .308 more is ammo availability. I got 3 boxes of Nosler 150 ballistic tips for $66 delivered. That's awesome in this climate.
@rogeradams9874
@rogeradams9874 Год назад
Sir, if you don't mind me asking, where did you find that ammo? Last year the only thing I could find was 165gr Nosler and a 20rd box was almost $60 after taxes. Honestly I have no idea what the point of aim is because I'm too scared to shoot them.

@garretteggleston7887
@garretteggleston7887 Год назад
How can you be "more effective" than the deer that are in my freezer from a 6.5? The finite details of ballistics are lost in the pragmatic world of shooting and harvesting. It doesn't particularly matter if the .308 hits harder if your shot placement is alright, which it absolutely should be if you're pulling the trigger at a living creature. I respect the price point argument. I have a .308 as well for that exact reason.

125gr is a light Creedmoor round, and 1000yds is easy with it. When I want a 1000yd challenge, I use the .308 playing in the wind. Which one is better depends on what you're using it for and at what distance. Sectional density is higher on Creedmoor, so it will drive deeper with comparable weight bullets.

In my limited history with the 6.5 Creedmoor, I cannot tell any difference between how it performs in comparison to the .308 win. To be clear, I dont feel undergunned when hunting with the 6.5 creedmoor and its low recoil is a bonus. I don't know what kind of tripod you are using for the slow mo camera but you can either hang a weight off the central hub or hang a weight off of one of the central arms that stabilizes the legs if it's that style of tripod. On film shoots you usually throw a sandbag on them, and if you look up "tripod sandbag" you should see some good examples of what I'm talking about. It makes a huge difference not having to worry about your camera rig falling over.

Nice video comparing these two. However, the 125 grain bullet in the 6.5 is light. For penetration testing, you need to compare equal weight bullets. The 6.5 can go as high as 160 grains, so a better comparison would be with 150 grain bullets in each. A secondary testing could be of efficiency of the cartridges. For that you can use 140 - 145 grain 6.5's compared to 165 - 168 grain 308's. Ballistic coefficient is essentially meaningless in light weight bullets. It's a number that indicates how well the bullet hangs on to its launch speed. Light bullets "peter out" quick. I like the 6.5 Creedmoor, but at its core, it's a short action 6.5x55 Swede, just like the 308 is a short action 30-06. I call them "kissing cousins" - same family, same general characteristics, individual differences.

General MacArthur decided the M1 Garand would use the 30-06 round. The original M1 winning cartridge was the .276 Pederson. Maybe you could do a comparison of the .277 Fury to the .276 Pederson.

For a more equal test you should have shot a more equal bullet weight (147 or 143 out of the 6.5)
@mojoman2001
@mojoman2001 Год назад
That's one way to compare, but I think each caliber is designed around a particular bullet weight. For .308, I think that is around 150 grains. For 6.5, which is necked down, I think it was designed for a lighter bullet. So, comparing the different but designed-for weights is a legit comparison.
@1001gator
@1001gator Год назад
@@mojoman2001 not really. The 6.5 was designed to shoot multiple weights. From 120 to 147. Most people I know shoot 140 or 143.

I got one those American Predators in .308win and it's a Tack Driver and 18" perfect length. My buddy has one too and it's just as good

The biggest factor when it comes to penetration is the the bullet, not Caliber

I like the CM for a lite rifle when i am doing a lot walking and stalking. But if I am doing a lot of slinging led then use my ar 10 and its a 308

Please do a jug test with a .375 H&H. Use a 300 grain soft point.

I was surprised that the 6.5CM did a little more damage than the.308. The 6.5 punched a bigger hole in the 5th jug even though it didn’t penetrate it, whereas the .308 only made a little dent with very little seepage.

Gotta Catch Em All!!! haha...great video. I love both my .308 ...and when I feel a bit frisky, I put on my man bun and shoot my 6.5! In all seriousness, I like both, but can stay on the scope and trace my misses (and the misses are me...not the gun) with the 6.5 Creedmoor

It seems like a lot of people always want to prove that some other or newer round is better than the .308. We've seen it before and we'll probably see it again. When you factor in cost and the fact that .308 is usually much easier to get, it makes the .308 a no brainer. Now, if you're doing some long range target shooting, sure, the 6.5 Creedmoor is probably a better round for that purpose but if you're looking to go deer hunting or something similar, the old .308 is just fine. BTW, there was a lot of talk when the 6.5 was beginning to pick up steam a few years back that the 6.5 may not be powerful enough to humanely take a large animal without possibly causing unnecessary suffering. The results here are nothing we can really go by but we see the 6.5 is smaller and ended up coming apart while the .308 did what is is designed to do.

@notsosilentmajority1 Good points. I will stick with .308. In regards to 6.5cm, I've seen too many instances of lost game or having to track wounded animals long distances with supposedly perfect shots - so they end up going back to another caliber to hunt with. When I go to the range, seems like the 6.5cm fanboys are always trying to convince everyone how awesome it is. Gets annoying. Yeah, 6.5cm may be better at hitting paper at distance, but not better than .308 at hunting game. When hunting deer, if a bear comes at me, I'll take my .308 and put it down, while the 6.5cm fanboys with their man-buns will grab their man-purses and hurriedly run away.

@@icerman855 I have to agree with you. I also like to consider the fact that the .308/7.62x51 is in the US military arsenal and that means it is in great supply. I try to stick with the calibers that the US military uses in great numbers. Just in case............

I've seen the same trend. I follow some hog hunters in tx that claim the creedmoor let them down to many times, and the .308 never fails them. Now that's not to say some don't do just as good or better with the creedmoor, I like them both myself. Fact is the .308 is a proven hog hammer.

@@coup5oh I agree. Let's not forget that the .308 is usually cheaper and is much more plentiful too. Happy hog hunting brother.
