Used to cycle to Lapel end of canal from Weoley Castle in the 1950s . They had put bars across that end of the tunnel entrance.

Hi, I watched this with great interest as I live in Boat Cottage which is a couple of hundred yards up from the entrance to the tunnel. The cottage used to be two homes plus an ale house with a stable attached for the stabling of the horses as they went from the tunnel entrance at Lapal to the entrance at the top of Shelly Lane.

Nice one Andy, I tried to trace that canal myself a few years ago. You've filled in all the missing gaps as far as possible now, so thanks. I shall look forward to the next episode. All the best.

This was a lovely Christmas Day surprise so thanks for posting it for today; hope that you and yours have had a Merry Christmas, I have walked this section and I think we were not so very far from that tree, I had always wondered where the old tunnel portal was located, even though I knew it was buried. Looking forward to the next episode.

New subscriber here, the Chugging Along channel (I think - or possibly Rob Cummings) alerted me to your stream. My family originates from the Dudley area and my mum particularly remembered the canals, which when she was young (1940s-50s) she said were revolting and full of dead dogs. So I have always been fascinated by canals! Anyway I look forward to watching the rest of your videos.

The 'straight 'mile' ' embankment on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Burnley is also 60ft high above the town and indeed the nearly adjacent Turf Moor ground of Burnley FC.

The proposed restoration of this canal has 20 locks and 2 tunnels to get over the hill with no ready water supply at the top. Re-boring the tunnel is not favoured (and very expensive) but it is the better option imo.
