This guy is fantastic at demonstrating a very complex 6/8 beat in a slow, counted manner that gives you space to practice and improve. Good job Dex!

I love your style of teaching. You take something that seems quite difficult for a beginning drummer like me and you make the elements of the lesson understandable and doable. Huge thanks for a very engaging lesson.

Beginner here. In the first half, why is the ghost note on the snare an "and" and not a 16th note "e" ? Same goes for the bass drum. Shouldn't the first half read: 1, 2e, 3e ?

16th notes in 6/8 time are counted as 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 +. So the ghost notes fall on the + of 2 and 5. Remember, it is 6/8, not 6/4, meaning that there are 6 8th notes in the bar, hence there are 12 16th notes per bar. You are probably used to 4/4, which is confusing you. If it was in 6/4, then you would count it as 1ea+2e+a3e+a4e+a5e+a6e+a, because there would be 6 quarter notes. Quarter notes can be divided into 4 to create 16th notes. But 8th notes can only be divided in half to create 16th notes.

@lukeskywalker5985

6/8 is the timing that Keith Moon famously could not play on Music Must Change, the last track The Who worked on for the Who Are You record (Keith's last album, released a few weeks before he died). The Who ended up recording it without drums as a result of Keith's inability to do it. Listening to this, which is why came here to listen, I'm pretty sure I could learn it, which is only to say Keith must have been in horrendous shape. The Who Are You track was recorded 6 months previously, which goes to show how fast his decline in skills took hold.

Thanks... I don't play drums but I ended up writing a song in 6/8 that has a slower jazz feel to it. In that case 60 clicks is on the fast side for my song which has unusual chords and substitutions... It's nice to play a few bars of it in time to your playing...

is it possible to sample the beat you play at the beginning for a song?
@AndresFe20
@AndresFe20 4 года назад
Hey and how do you call when you doing a normal groove let’s say a basic one and then you add one beat before keeping the same grove. Instead starting on 1 you add another beat and you do something like 1,2,3,4-1-1,2,3,4. After that, of course to keep the rhythm you have to subtract that extra beat you added before. Someone here knows the name of this?

You say 'and', but the notation says 'E'...right? Two bars make a 16 note....what am I missing? Doesn't it read 1 and a 2 e and 3 e and a?
