Normally these "how to skate outside" videos irritate me to no end because the person is there explaining how to skate on uneven surfaces while standing on the smoothest promenade EVER! But not Katie 😂, that's some proper normal surfaces one would find outside! I loved this and picked up some good hints (especially the one foot lemons)! Keep up the good work
YES! I am struggling to skate on the surfaces where I live. They are so bumpy and chipped and you name it. Every time I go out to try, I get caught up the instant I start to go. I have 78a wheels, but I still can't get rolling on that rough surface. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I know it has to be me and not the wheels. If anyone reads this, can you please give me some advice on how to START rolling on the rough surfaces?
Thank you for the staggered stance tip . . . there's this huge dip in my area to get into the park, and I'm honestly kinda scared I'm gonna die while doing it so thanks for the help :DDD
Finally an instruction video that is not shot on perfectly flat pavement! Thank you, I'm so excited to start skating but I've had a hard time finding good places to practice as I don't have a garage/basement and live right in the city center
This was a great video! I used to play roller derby years ago and hurt my knee pretty badly. I've always been a little afraid of tackling outdoor skating but just bought another pair of skates to do exactly that. Thank you for the tips! I've subscribed!
I started ice skating a few months ago. It was terrifying at first (i never did any sports and my physique was awful), but i got pretty Ok and confident with it over time. I can move freely with both feet on the ice, or even with one. I can skate backward on both feet, i can plow stop. I only fell three or four times times total i think, nothing major (never word any padding). I got bored of going in circles in one direction constantly and started dreaming about roller skating - change of scenery, can go whenever wherever. It honestly thought my ice skating skills would give me a huge head start and i would be flying with them in no time. WRONG!!!!!! I was wrong! The hubris! I fell three times in an hour, pretty gnarly, Thank God i was wearing serious protection on my elbows and wrists! I still sort of sprained my left wrist! It’s like I’m a complete and total beginner to skating! Terrifying! It was very hard to manoeuvre, the wheels are very clunky, wide and flat to the very edges (might try to change them), the wind, the ups and down, obstacles, uneven pavements oh my gosh! I stand humbled! But I am not giving up. I will look for better wheels and better surfaces. It was exhilarating as well as scary. Can’t wait to groove in them eventually!
You’ll get it. The transition takes a few goes and outside is so unforgiving too. If you’re coming from ice, don’t put the back of the skate in first like ice skaters do. Aim for the ball of the foot you’ll be much better balanced when changing feet that way.
I primarily skate outside and I live up north so ideal surfaces are limited and I am used to it. The staggered stance is definitely where you want to be outdoors never the neutral. My body weight is always primarily on my back leg with the knee bent slightly as a shock absorber. Any weight I put on the lead foot is more in the heel and if I see debris or a substantial crack I will lift the toe on the lead skate. Briefly locking your stance muscularly to brace for a possible catch on pavement is helpful too. Anytime you can skate over cracks at an angle is going to lessen your chances of tripping with quad skates too. I rarely take a spill outside using these techniques and can power through some pretty rough surfaces and even patches of light gravel at a pretty high rate of speed. Over time when you develop your legs and dexterity you can even try to incorporate jumping and hopping from the staggered position to avoid pavement obstacles and large cracks or surface variations.
I’ve been doing indoor skating for years and I’m comfortable dong that at any speed but I once tried outside and I was worse than I think every beginner I have ever seen lol thanks for the tips
Great tips for skating outdoors! Only thing of note is that I would advise against T-stopping downhill, because depending on how steep and/or long the hill or the speed you are going at, and the material of the wheels, it will burn them flat, I had this happen to me once and never used T-stops while street skating.
Friend, thank you so much for the video and for the lesson. I will be gifted with a pair of roller sooner and I’m so exciting to learn specially how to stop it and control the velocity. Seeing you doing seems so simple♥️. ~~Success~~⭐️
Omg Thank You for This vídeo!!! I started learning skating last December but after a month I gave up. Why? Because there is no smooth place to skate near my house 🥲 And it was very frustrating to not be able to do it smoothly and fall all the time and I didn’t have enough strength to skate like this (physically). Please do more videos of skating outside 💚 and tricks/moves that we can do on the street
So glad it helped you. Next video is more tips for outdoors so hopefully that will help increase your confidence too. You’ve got this! Show those stones who’s boss xx
And here I am trying to be the next Brian Aragon lol. I haven't skated outside but I'd love to. Learned backwards skating and jump 360s in 1 1/2 month but don't own a pair only go to the rink this helps out a lot because outside is a different world as far as friction and surface it seems.
Great tips! I'd love a video on how to skate on decomposed granite. And your thoughts about skating on this surface & your favorite outdoor surface to skate on. Thanks so much!
Hi. (I have to admit to having to google decomposes granite!). 😂. It looks as though it has a fine gravel layer so I think that would be pretty hard to skate on. We have a local country park that has this type of path and I’m always sad that I cannot skate on it. I love smooth tarmac outside.
@@Skatie THANK YOU! We are thinking about putting pathway on our property to skate on (an inexpensive way) so that's why I asked...I guess that's not the answer. Thanks for your help.
This was really helpful, thanks! Question, what requirements should I have to start skating outside? For example, be able to transition, skate backwards and stuff like that? I recently bought a pair of quads after not skating for 3 years, and before that I wore inlines! I've only tried skating at my nearby playground, but I want to try going to a park.
I’d recommend having a couple of ways of stopping confidently. You never know what you might encounter that needs you to stop quickly and a confident forward skate with a staggered stance. Turns and backwards for outside are a little more risky so perhaps only give those a go once your feeling ready. Gear up and go for it. Have fun xx ⛑️
If you lean on the little toe and big toe the wheels should flex. If they’re not flexing then you probably need to loosen your trucks. I have a video for that too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0bSFVIiPpGs.html
It could potentially be that you need to change your wheels. Keep an eye out for the next video tomorrow as we are talking all about different wheels and what they are like when using them both indoors and outdoors. 😄💕🛼
I just wish I could practice in a place like the one you are filming, it seems so peaceful and in your shots there are no people behind haha Seems like every time I wanna go out with my skates everyone is thinking the same thing or smtg and I end up not going because I wanna fall on my butt in peace, man😂
It looks peaceful in the shots but what you don’t see are the 3 or 4 failed takes where someone flies past on their bike or a random dog walks into frame 😂.
It feels like an inside joke…I giggled so hard at Brandon Farris’ video when it came across my Facebook feed, and thought it was hilarious when he mentioned you! And to see this video including THAT video really made my day 😂😂
god I'm so glad to find one of these from a UK perspective, every time I've asked/researched about how to stay stable on rough and uneven pavements I just get 600 Americans telling me to find a smooth concrete path, like any of those actually exist here
I started skating a month ago and I sucked and fell alot but now recently I’ve been getting faster at skating being comfortable with crossovers and shuffle skating your videos really helped when I started and now I just watch your videos to support you and get some tips to help me 😂
@@maddieek6865 honestly I’ve been roller skating for a year now I now jam skate and honestly it’s worth the effort for sure but it’s definitely a little easier than you think just keep going and gain balance
I cannot express how helpful this is!!!! There aren’t any roller rinks near me, and all the flat surfaces are imperfect (bumpy, cracks, twigs, etc) so this is so useful to know! Thank you from a beginner skater!
Thank you for bringing so much clarity with these videos! I recently picked up roller skating after I got rejected from my dream art school (Sheridan College’s famously competitive Animation program). It’s been a great new thing to break into, and it really helped me move on these past couple months! Would you have any advice to give as for getting more defined edges? Since quads have wider trucks, I find it harder to lean into a side (and I actually find my in-lines easier to manage for that reason). Keep up the excellent work!
Thank you. Sorry to hear about your disappointment. Skating is definitely my happy place to leave all the everyday worries behind for a while. I’ve just added an edges drills video. Make sure you have movement in your trucks too that can help with edges.
@@Skatie Ever since I was little, even before they made them, I always struggled using the toe stop. I randomly saw a bunch of guys trick skating at the rink many years ago, and they all had them. I’ve loved them since. Ty for your videos! !
The most informative yet concise video for beginners among the 12videos that i watched today. Wanna start now. Really a good teacher does half the job.. Thank you.
Tysm for this tips, I just got my rollers and many years I had in-line skates soooo it's quite weird with rollers bc I don't know really much about rollers 😅😅😅
Just started getting a little more adventurous with my outdoor skating. I used to only skate outside in a small flat-ish area but just this week I have been skating over cracks and uneven grounds. The stagger stance and staying super low is how I am able to do it, basically bending the knees as much as possible but keeping my back straight. The first time I skated over a crack I was going super slow and was almost sitting... that's how low I was and when I saw it wasn't too bad and I started getting more confidence and picked up the speed a bit which actually helped.
Nice video not to stray off the subject but u ever noticed how bike trails are to be fun and relaxing but with a loud ass highway with trucks the states idea of nature I guess lol but nice video very informative it helped me out in a spot or two for improvement ty be well
As a Brandon Farris fan, and a beginner skater, I LOVED this video (And the random Brandon Farris appearance) As a younger skater I probably should've been watching tutorial videos before I got out and started skating.. (Especially since where I am there's no skating rinks, so I'm forced into the outside) I didn't even know how to break at first, I just learnt how to use the toe stop today😭 Thank you so much for this video :D Before I watched this there was no t-stops, or v-stops, it was pure luck LOL
Dam i wont be able to practice roller skating ill just have to do it cuz i live in a place where the are A CRAP TON OF INCLINES and i also go biking so i find it hard to go up sometimes BECAUSE the inclines are kinda steep sometimes so if u dont break expect to break a leg or faceplant into concrete and if your lucky GRASS
I skated for the first time yesterday. I found an empty parking lot to skate around in and some girl walking her dog saw me and helped me out a bit. The dog didn't like the skates at all tho.
I wear Risport Cristallo boots in this video. I used to use them for artistic roller skating which is very similar to figure skating on ice and we use the same boots. Good spot.
All great tips!! I find myself telling a lot of skaters some of these same tips when they ask how I can skate outside so often! 100% always recommend wearing pads too!! One other thing to mention is to get yourself some beefy toestops! You've got some great ones here, so this tip is for everyone else. Having large toestops can help you hold your balance when you're stopped, and also gives you a lot more power to control your speed when you are turning around backwards to stop. Powerdyne Jupiter or Gumball toestops are both really great options.
I wish I watched this before I decided I could tackle one of those overpass things that go over a road and they're really steep and narrow. Good choice for my first day skating! It wasn't a graceful descent but at least I was able to slowly melt down the pass hanging on to the railing with minimal witnesses and minimal injuries. I wanted to know, how do you deal with those yellow bumpy curb thingies? The ones where sidewalks slope downwards to meet with the street.
I'm French living in the US. I used to do in line as a kid. But now o think i want to try those roller skates. Here you can't really find places to skate (like cycle lanes) but they have skate part and roller ring... So i still not sure which one to do but i probably try the skates... And yes! Thank you for showing tips with the rocks and twigs, we need more 😂
Finding a place to skate can definitely be tricky. Have lots of fun with your new hobby. I have lots of other video too which will help you get started, gain confidence and find your balance xx.
I went outside for my first time ever skating… now I’ve got a bandaid on my arm, and a sticker on my skates to cover up the nasty scratch I got when I tried (and missed 💀) to bail into a patch of grass
I really want to get a pair of Roller skate shoes so that way after school I can just skate home but to get home it’s like 90% down hill so makes it pretty difficult hopefully I get these for Christmas but it depends on shipping
Hi! I Have wheels with high grip, and I am not able to go on the T position to stop. Wheels cause to much frictions and I fall, I am sure I am doing it wrong but not sure what
The t stop needs you to be able to balance on one leg so the other can be turned out and placed behind. It might just been you need a little more practice on one leg first.
I was a competitive dance and figure skater in my youth and still do quite well, even when I've been off skates for years, when I skate INDOORS. Well, here in my area, the indoor rinks are not in the best areas so I decided to get a pair of outdoor skates. Oh, my, it's very very different and I feel like a beginner again. It's awful but I'm determined. My shins burn after just a few minutes and I couldn't figure out how to use a toe stop after decades of Tstops in the rinks. I'm glad to know I can use a Tstop with my outdoor skates because I'm most comfortable with that. Now, Katie, please tell me what plates, boots, and wheels you are using because they look a lot like my old indoor skates but I couldn't get something similar in an outdoor kit. Thank you for your videos!
I just got my side by side and tried them outside for the first time. I used in liners when I were younger but that’s like…5+ years ago… I am watching this for the 10th time😂 you are good at explaining but danm I am not good 😂
I just got a new pair of roller skates today! I’m 14 and I’ve been looking and watching yt all day and so far this video is very helpful! I can’t wait to try out my new skates today
@@Skatie thanks! Also update: tried them and they are amazing!!! Here’s the twist, I don’t really know how to skate! But this video really did help me out mainly with the stops and helping me out with momentum
i’m not in the UK, but the only place close to me that i can skate is like half bumpy and half smooth, and i have a pair of terrible skates. (they work for learning, but they’re chicago skates, they likely won’t hold forever)
Any advice on how to actually move outside 😅 I've been skating inside for a few months happy stopping going forward can go backwards a bit, can sometimes to a transition but when I go outside I literally dont move 🤣 thanks x
Outside is much more unforgiving then the beautiful smooth surface of a rink. I feel you. Do you know what wheels you have? Having big soft wheels can make a world of difference outside.
Now it's just convincing my parents to get me some skates for Christmas or my birthday. I really want to learn but they said no because of the uneven roads and sidewalks.
I already Rollerskate but I need to get more stable because I want to learn how to do more things because I’m self tort and this realy helped thank you!
I've been skating more or less for two summers with bad luck (inside wheels, bad feet, rain) and I've finally started fixing some of those things for this summer! This video is the most helpful I've seen since the Finnish pavements look exactly the same as in the UK (If a little bit worse 😂) and I feel a lot more confident now once my wheels arrive. Especially the hill tip was super important, I hadn't seen that anywhere in action with not perfectly smooth hills. Thank you so much and love from Finland! Side note to everyone else: if you get new wheels check if the pack has 4 or 8 wheels 😅 and 8 bearings will not be enough for two skates. They sold out the wheel color I got so now my already glitter colored skates will be even more chaotic, which I'm not mad about.
Ooo I love two colour wheels! Your skates will look amazing. Great tip about the quantities I think it’s because skate boarders use the same bearings and they only need 8 it’s often not very clear x. Glad the video has helped, I wish for those amazing smooth pavements! 😂 happy rolling 🛼💕😀
