I'm new (but old). I installed Reaper. I'm likely going to replace it. I don't want to learn how to tinker with a DAW or have hundreds of parameters to scroll through, but plug an instrument into an interface and use some modeling and FX via plugins, then press record then play. I'm not at all happy with reaper. I was going to try Cakewalk, but the free version is being discontinued this year. I want simple, and just make music. .....a friend and I both have telescopes. I take mine out and point them at the sky. My friend constantly buys parts to build something better than what he can buy. He's failed every time, but it's his deal. I actually watch the sky. With a DAW, I want to turn on the computer and start recording instead of tinkering. At this point, I don't know if it's that simple.

What about Logic Pro? My first DAW was Studio One. I couldn't make it work. Then I tried Logic and everything made sense. I'm going to use Logic until I outgrow it.

It’s a little bit of a learning curve, but I think I would’ve put MPC beats on the list it’s free. It comes with great sounds and I don’t think the learning curve is that much worse than maybe able to live light.

I use GarageBand because it’s free, it’s not fun though. Fruity loops is fun to use and therefore makes me more excited to make music.

Reaper is not open source. - it's the best DAW for my workflow. (Great Pro Tools alternative.)
