Use conditioner to keep the hair soft as possible. Depends on what your goals are but I would probably keep trimming the sides to prevent the poof, but for me I was going for that two block style. Even if you're going for like all around long hair, you can still trim it at the earlier stages, because even with the overgrown haircut in this video the sides will be shorter than the top. So when growing out an even buzz cut you can trim it so the top is longer than the sides and back to prevent a round poof look and a more oval look. Then once the top is like 3-4 inches long I would stop trimming the sides if your goal is the overgrown. Conditioner will help immensely. When the top grows longer it'll start laying down half way and still sticking out half way which looks mad weird and hard to fix with just hair wax. At that point I'd say to get acquainted with either a straightener (that's how all asian dudes with nice long hair get the look), or a blow dryer and round brush (harder and longer to use, but better for hair). You'll have to learn it eventually if you want to add nice texture to your hair that is shown in all the examples in the video.

Probably the two block or middle part would work best for you. Or the buzz would work too.

don't have much experience in this but look into transforming frizzy hair into curls, I've seen lots of people (mostly women) have crazy transformations by optimizing their hair care routine for curly hair
