Thanks for not having a long intro and getting directly to the point. Great info even after brewing a couple years.

We don't do that here. Too much foreplay on YT with people talking about their cousin's sick dog in Kentucky or god knows whatever else. I aim to be ballz deep within 10 seconds :)

Sous vide for mashing at controlled temp.

@IBrew-UBrew Год назад
Indeed. If you keep the heating element clean to avoid scorching, it’s and awesome tool in the arsenal. I would, however, not recommend using it on a cold mash wort (non-enzymatic mash). Scorch city!!!

I only use paintball tanks, that I fill off a bulk siphon tank. I lost like 40 pounds of co2 once because of a slow leak
@IBrew-UBrew

That's a total bummer about losing that much Co2 in one go. And yes, what you listed is a another very good reason to use paintball tanks.

Garrett, I'm always looking for and trying to help other channels, as some of the bigger home brewing channels have assisted me on many occasions. Still, honestly, I'm afraid I have to disagree with most of your recommendations. Also, most 5 gallons kegs are NOT 5 gallons, with some being less and most being slightly more than 5 gallons. I will keep checking your channel out, but I'm not in agreement with your recommendations on this video.
@IBrew-UBrew
@IBrew-UBrew Год назад
Sure, maybe it’s + or - a few percent but what are we using it to measure against …. Another pot that’s likely plus or minus a few percent or a scale by weight that’s plus or minus a few percent? I use kegs to measure my brew day water as I keg ferment and the water will end up back into the keg later in the day as wort. One less variable. Cheers!
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing Год назад
@@IBrew-UBrew I verified the measurement using two devices before measuring several kegs. One 128 oz Accupour pitcher and one OXO Good Grips 2-cup angled measuring cup. (I'm OCD on things like that, as my first glass temp probe from almost 10 years ago was 10 F off, which sadly took me over 6 months before I realized it was that far off. My first Tilt Hydrometer measured 72 F water as 5000 F (Really), and of course, they swapped it out with a huge apology.). I'm sending you the link to the video by email. I learned a lot personally when I did the video, as I was shocked at how much more some of the kegs could hold.
@IBrew-UBrew
@IBrew-UBrew Год назад
I guess that's where we are different. I'm not bothered by being 5-10% off in basically any direction on anything beer related. That's what keeps it fun for me and still allows me to sleep soundly at night :) However, that said, I realize some people enjoy obsessing over these margins. If you are one of these brewers, I recommend having a look at Bitter Reality Brewing's video on the subject. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NqDVNlTScpM.html Cheers!

Whats with you and all the BBQ guys on the ThermaPen? Don't know about this channel but I am pretty sure that the larger BBQ channels are getting compensated for trashing the cheaper thermometers. 10 years ago I bought a couple of inexpensive digital thermometers and both of them are still going strong. As they say "trust but verify" and my verification tells me that I shouldn't trust in this case.
@IBrew-UBrew
@IBrew-UBrew Год назад
Yes, you can get a direct affiliate link through Thermoworks. (I have one) but you could also get an affiliate for cheap ass thermos through Amazon and make money that way too and probably make more money. That said, I legit did go through a combination of 4 CDNs / Taylors before I got fed up and bought a Thermapen. We were overseas at the time (see the "celsius only" text on the Pen itself) and needed something known for reliability. If there's a way to look up its age via serial # I'm happy to provide it here.. (I'm not implying you are calling me out or starting any sort of confrontation, it's just an amazing product I'd love everyone to have because it's absolutely one less thing to worry about on brew/BBQ day!). You can even see in my much older videos me using the same orange thermometer. These vids have me with short hair looking much younger filmed in a cramped apartment with even worse production value. These were filmed probably about 2013-14 ish for the record. As far as BBQ goes, I'm a meat head and the thought of repeating a rather unpleasant experience with under-cooked chicken terrifies me. Cheers, Degen Garrett
@pbshooter100
@pbshooter100 Год назад
@@IBrew-UBrew Sounds good. I'm sure the Thermapen is a good product, just way over priced. I've used a variety of digital thermometers over the years and have never had one to be so inaccurate such that it caused meat to be under cooked. So that sounds like a scare tactic to me, just saying.
@IBrew-UBrew
@IBrew-UBrew Год назад
@@pbshooter100 not a scare tactic from me. My Taylor was broken, I rolled the dice on some chicken and, well, paid the price.
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing Год назад
I have a cheap pen (I bought a second one recently from the same source on Amazon), and it is crazy accurate, usually dead on or, worst case 0.1 F off. Therma pens are overpriced for the same products and a name.
@pbshooter100
@pbshooter100 Год назад
@@BitterRealityBrewing Yes that's been my experience as well. I have several cheap pens and they all read within a tenth of each other. All of them are going strong with some of them being pretty old. I usually buy a new one every now and then as I either give one away to someone who needs one or just flat out misplace it.

maybe a bit paranoid: CO2 should be food grade, paintball gas may not be.
@IBrew-UBrew
@IBrew-UBrew 3 месяца назад
If you are really worried about non food grade co2, you could always invest thirty dollars into a co2 fill station and fill off your food grade bulk tank. I just love the portable nature of the paintball tank. Cheers

21 years of brewing has taught you very little it would seem. The ONLY decent thing you mentioned was the high class thermometer the rest was just unneeded shite!
@rdavidw68

I disagree. I have been brewing for 30 years and my process has evolved for what works best for me, mostly by picking and choosing from what had worked well for others. Its nice to see other perspectives. For example, I use 5 gallon ziplocks to capture the fermenter CO2, vodka in my airlocks, a vacuum sealer to keep everything fresh and to vacuum pump filter my wine. A good process with cheap and easy stuff will yield better results than expensive equipment without a good process.
