Rarely do you see people explain the modes from a practical point of view, how to actually apply them. Like really showing the progressions you can use. Good stuff.

Absolutely!!! I have been thinking the same. Most tutorials focus on modes as scales, I suppose (and I'm thankful to people who make such videos) - but ignore how to actually use them. I completely agree. Thanks again.

A tiny but absolutely essential bit of information when describing modes is there are no accidentals (black keys) used. It took me forever to hear the modes starting with cmaj until someone made that clear.

Solid video, well done. My one suggestion would be to start each progression example by playing the chords by themselves, without any vocals so we can really hear it, then maybe add the vocals the second time through.

What a great and educational video. The charts are so well done and clearly the result of in depth research and thinking this stuff through with a passion for truly understanding something that so many have tried to explain but few have been able to. The charts are truly helpful. The examples are very important and finally someone who can sing them to drive home the expression and feel of the music. Truly refreshing. One point that I would like to put on the table on this topic is that there is the tendancy to come away from this thinking that songs are written in different modes while this is indeed the case for some songs, most good songs do NOT employ a single mode, rather they employ multiple modes, and switch back and forth. This is important I believe to come to terms with, because if you really want to understand what makes a song special you have to know the modes and recognize how they are employed in the context of a song...amongst other things

Thank You so much for this explanation of modes. Been stuck with some typical chord progressions for years. Very well put. Made my Eureka moments in modes. The raised 6th which is a characteristic note. And a characteristic note is the one different from the functional modes that is Aeolian and Ionian. ❤❤ Thanks a lot. This will help me unlock other modes!

Here’s the 7 mode formulas but out of order. Ionian, 1, the major scale; 4 is Lydian with #4; 5 is Mixolydian with b7. Modes 2-3-6 are minor. Dorian is the 2nd mode with b3/b7. Aolian is mode 6 with b3/b6/b7. Phrygian is mode 3 with b2/b3/b6/b7. Only mode 7, Locrian, works over a Diminished triad, b2/b3/b5/b6/b7. - MEMORIZE THOSE 7 FORMULAS! - Play over a backing triad and learn to hear them.

The Dorian mode is a palindrome in that if you reverse the intervals, you still get the Dorian mode. This is opposed to, say the Major mode, where if you reverse the intervals, you get the Phrygian mode or the Minor mode, where if you reverse the intervals, you get the Mixolydian mode.

And after playing in Dorian for a while, switch to Ionian or Aeolian to either revel in the harmony of the major or really feel the emotion of the minor. Great way to build/release tension between songs.

@m.vonhollen6673 20 дней назад
Modes are just scales from starting, in this case, the major scale on another note. Play a major scale, WW1/2WWW1/2 steps is how you do it. If you just flatten the 7, you get Mixolydian (the 5th mode). If instead you sharpen the 4, you get Lydian (the 4th mode). Dorian, the 2nd mode, has b3 and b7; so it will work over a minor chord unlike those first 3. Aolian, the 6th mode, has b3/b6/b7, and is also called the Natural minor scale. Phrygian, the 3rd mode has b2/b3/b6/b7 and is the Spanish-sounding minor scale due to that b2. So 3 modes that’ll work over a major triad, and 3 that’ll work over a minor triad. Locrian, the 7th mode, has b5 so it’s the only mode that works over a Diminished triad (1-b3-b5); it has b2/b3-b5-b6-b7. Memorize those 7 formulas. Start playing over a backing track of a major/minor/or diminished triad. Sing along and learn to hear those intervals. It’s work but you can do it!

I'm so glad I found your channel. What a great channel especially with all the visualization effects you're including. GREAT work man. Loved this video. I'm noticing you're doing lots of videos on Dorian. Can you do a similar video to this but on Mixolydian, perhaps also on Lydian? Great work again Mike. One question: At 3:30 in your diagram of the Dorian mode chords, you signify the Key as D. Isn't the key still C if you are in D dorian?
@samuelemariani3876
@samuelemariani3876 5 месяцев назад
Theorically yes, we can say that we are at the same time in A minor (wich is the the relative minor of C major) and all the other modes with relative Key... it all depends the way you want to "Think" your progression, because all the chords contained in D dorian are the same contained in C major and A minor, but just in a different position on the scale.The crucial thing is the way and in wich order you choose to use them

Regarding the 'Karma Police' progression, why wouldn't that bIV F maj chord make it A Aeolin mode?
@DavidC2-fc7tj
@DavidC2-fc7tj 21 день назад
That last progression, karma police. If you play the A Dorian scale over it just doesn't seem to work because of that flattened 6 chord, F major. But A minor scale works. But the chords line up to in terms of if they are major or minor to if you think in terms of A Dorian. (Except the borrowed F major). It's weird..

Wonderful explanation! I have a question though, there’s a song called “fate” by H.E.R that uses that Minor 1 to Maj4 movement but then she sort of resolves on a Maj5… in Dorian that 5 is minor so what mode would that be in? The progression juggles from Dm - Gmaj and then resolves on Amaj. Any thoughts??
@Phazur
@Phazur 29 дней назад
Wouldn't call the second chord inKarmaPolicaD or IV, more an Am over F#, being a vi, so an F#min7b5. It share notes with D, but hasa way darker sound and the F# in bass is essential. Good stuff though
