my tip .. get a solar panel ( the biggest you can fit on either a handlebar bag , top of pannier or on a back-pack / rucksack ) .. unless it's really crappy weather it will keep a decent power-bank charged

For the coffee if you don't want to mess with grounds or don't like instant coffee, look into steeped coffee bags, coffee in a tea bag style they come in different brands and types.

Bring appropriate gear for the climate you will be riding in. If you are riding in Patagonia or Iceland or anywhere where the winds are fierce, dont expect your Ultra light tent to withstand the wind. Rest of the equipment also needs to reflect that. Your sleep system needs to be appropriate for the night time temperatures. Dont bring a short sleeved jersey and shorts if you are riding in the mountains where temperatures routinely drop below zero. In summary, your gear choice needs to adhere to where you will be riding. Also, factor in some rest. Both full on rest days on longer trips and rest stops in your daily route.

One thing is that you can carry more stuff on a flat tour than a hilly one! Canal tow paths and rail trails tend to be through more urban areas, so a more substantial lock makes sense. A less attractive bike can aid security concerns also! Oddly sometimes slick tires are better in mud because they clog mud guards less. Nothing like a bike that no longer rolls!

As a lifelong backpacker, here's a few more tips I'd add: The lighter you pack, the farther you can go. Consider no stove at all, try cold soaking or food that doesn't need to be cooked. A wash cloth to clean your body at the end of the day. Or, if you use wet wipes, save them for toilet paper in the morning. Pack frequently used items where they are easily accessed, put things you use once a day at the bottom. Put the clothes you're going to wear in the morning in the bottom of your sleeping bag before you go to bed. They'll be toasty warm when you put then on. Balance the load in your bags, otherwise they'll start to lean on you. A small amount of rope or paracord can really get you out of a pinch. Ibuprofen, chapstick and sunscreen. They're small and light, and when you need them and don't have them your really feel it. Make your own, small first aid kit. Outdoor gear can be very expensive. Your money is best spent on a sleeping bag and pad, then shelter. Everything else can either be found very affordably or made. Fancy stoves, cookware and knives are great, but not necessary. Don't bring brand new gear into the field. Know how to use everything you have and make sure it works and is in good repair before hand. Bring a good attitude and a calm head. Nothing can sabotage a trip like someone who freaks out when the going gets tough.

That's some of the most glamorous bikepacking I've ever seen. Myself and my company of friends have experienced comparatively so much trauma: reparation of exploded innertubes, riding with a ducttaped tyre for weeks because the tube blew up like a balloon through a sizeable hole in the tyre and exploded. Riding with only one pedal. Riding without a saddle, having to create one from a tent bag. Spokes on an old bike breaking daily. Riding on one broken gear for weeks. Having the tent canvas ruptured in a nightly storm by a tentpole breaking and piercing it. And still I woulnd't call any of these true disasters, because we always pulled through. On a sidenote, you don't always need to put your tent up when the weather looks good. you can just put the canvas on the ground like a picnic blanket and sleep on it under the open sky - and if some drops should fall just wrap the canvas over you like a blanket. Type of bike and weight don't really matter unless you have a very specific timetable and want to get very far very fast - anyone can pick any bike and just hit the road with a rucksack in moments notice, if you have a carrier that's all you really need, I've even seen cyclists attach their rucksack on top of their steering although that seems insane even to me. At least if you have your rucksack it still won't be a disaster because you can always walk out of a situation even if the bike is completely wrecked and won't even roll anymore.

My top tips for bike backing/touring (Europe specific): 1) Slow down and enjoy the surroundings. I get a few weeks a year to fly over to Europe so I make sure I make the most of my time! 2) Cut the mileage short if it's climbing day and push the distance if it's flat. Allow for acclimation and recovery from jet lag if you had a long flight like me. 3)Be flexible with your itinerary. On one tour my wife and I were snowed in on Albula Pass in Switzerland and had to take the train down the other side. I was looking forward to the descent after the climb but it wasn't meant to be that trip. I'll be back! 4) Take in the local food and culture. Have conversations with the locals even if you only speak a few words of their language. Pointing, facial expressions, and smiles go a long way to breaking down the language barrier. 5) Shop in a Coop/Lidl or bakery and pick up food for the day. I also hit up any local farmers markets for fruit and cheese to get through the day as well. It's much cheaper and healthier than stopping at a restaurant or pub for food. 6) Use alloy bottle cages and buy a couple of 1L/2L bottles of water before starting out. Just refill those and use them for your whole trip and recycle when done. Even small farms on the side of the roads and trails have water troughs where you can refill your bottles. BTW, the Swiss claim to have the best water in the Alps and I won't argue! 7) Respect your riding partners! Everyone suffers in their own way so if someone needs a break or wants to eat stop and let them recover. If you're the lead rider and pushing through the wind all day make sure you're fueling up accordingly too. 8) Give everyone a job. My wife is the route planner and in charge of hotels & lodging. I'm the lead rider and bike mechanic. If we have friends along one is the cultural historian and the other is the interpreter. 9) Embrace the suck!!! It's not always going to go as planned so expect some sucky days. That said, you're outside riding your bike so how bad can it really be???

Fantastic video, and so nice to get another quick view of your Mount Olympus epic. My absolute number one bike packing tip for beginners is, when planning your trip, forget how far you are capable of cycling in one go. I have found that with the added burden and rigours of bike packing, a distance of 2/3 my maximum is plenty enough. On my first ever trip I overdid the distance, which left me exhausted and wandering around the campsite like a zombie!!

Be sure to pack an extra ziplock bag to pack out the used TP. Dig a deep cat hole and bury a #2 but everything else please carry out your waste paper. Iconic trails like the TMB and Camino get covered in seasonal "hiker flowers" because people aren't considerate enough to pick up after themselves.

Tent/Bivy&Tarp and some hostel to recover and wash that dirt. Best combo. Also I would recommend Poland - Lot of people understand English, beautiful nature, lot of history, good infrastructure (even small village shops accept cards, new bike paths, bike lines etc.), quite cheap even from Czech Rep. perspective, most of the Poland is flat. And I their sandy beaches around beautiful Gdansk.

A couple of tips : Plan a little and smart, with a gps and/or a map. Know your limits and don't push more than you should. If possible, don't ride against the wind, especially on long distances. Wake up early. Always carry a multitool/spare tube/patches/knife/lighter/tape. Eat and drink regularly.

Nice video. I do more unsupported(bring everything with you) touring. Mud guards are not just for you but also to not spray your cycling buddy with mud or dirt. I always weighed my bike loaded to make sure I did not over pack. On disc brakes. They are great with a loaded bike. On wooden bridges that are slightly damp it is like your on ice.

Top tip - Take your pick: Option1 check carefully the max system weight of your frame and wheels and be sure not to test those limits OR alternatively: Option2 glance at the web site of your wheel manufacturer without looking at the specific wheels you own, and then accept having to take a series of 9 local trains over 2 days to get back to Brussels when your front wheel bearings collapse at the outskirts of Gothenburg with an overloaded bike.... (Option 2 comes with the Brucey Bonus that you can convince your wife you really do NEED those fancy pants carbon wheels to be able to ride to her parents house in Sweden and back successfully)
