This is about a 6 day fly-in fishing trip to Montana's Middle Fork Flathead River. Also featured are Schafer Creek (6:02) and Dolly Varden Creek (12:28). The primary fish here are cutthroat trout. The area gets a bit crowded from mid-June to mid-July but in August there were no other anglers.

Aww, man. I flew into Schafer with my Dad every year from '86-05 minus the bad fire year in 2000. What a spectacular spot.

Wet the net before landing fish, don't drag them onto the ground, and you're good to go.

Looks like the South Fork is better for numbers and size of fish... but the middle fork is better for solitude. Is that your conclusion as well?

Generally yes, but there is only solitude on the middle fork after mid July.

Really not trying to be mean, but I just want you to learn so that these fisheries that I am lucky enough to live close to and enjoy do not get ruined. Please do not shore the fish to take them off the hook - it removes their slime coating and a high percentage of the fish that you do this to will get very sick or die from infection. Please carry a net or learn how to grab them in the water, or do not fish. Please do not handle fish with gloves on - it again removes their slime coating and can cause them to die of infection. Remember to keep 'em wet!

While I appreciate your concern I am not in agreement. First, I do always use a net when possible. Second, scientific studies have shown the trout mortality rate when caught and released averages 2.5%. By far the #1 and #2 causes of death are exhaustion and oxygen depletion. After that are various factors such as using bait, barbed treble hooks, dropping fish, shaking fish, squeezing fish, damage to the internal organs or gills or eyes. These findings have been duplicated numerous time. Never have these studies found skin irritation or slime removal to result in the death of a trout. Some studies have specifically focused on this topic and found no correlation. For example, it has been proven that wetting your hands before handling a fish has zero impact on the trout mortality rate. See Hulbert and Engstrm-Heg (1980), Hegen et al. (1987), and "Hooking Mortality: A Review for Recreational Fisheries" by maurice Muoneke & Michael Childress (1994). Also, I wear gloves to protect my hands. I will never agree that protecting a fish is more important than protecting a person.
