Dr Todd Sullivan I love your demonstration for best exercises for me to improve balance & prevent falls. Dr Sillivan I am interested in more exercises to strengthen my balance because I have osteoporosis of bones and I weak in my glute & spine.
Thanks for your video. I hade a stroke 7 years ago and since, I’m approaching 80 y.o. And I do similar exercises every morning without fail. And it does help tremendously.
Seen your video doctor. Excellent job you are doing for seniors in particular. Please keep it up for provision of more physical benefits to human beings. Deep Regards.
Definitely going to do these! One thing to make this video more wonderful is to mention the safety issues before the exercises, not during. Thank you SO much!
Great exercises doctor Sullivan, 3 months ago I lost my balance while walking outdoor in a diving position. Thank you very much. They are a great help to me being a 71 year old asian female.
Great video doc! I am an aging x-country skier and I use all the balance exercises you are recommending! As a reputable doctor you will never tell 100% of the truth about balance as many of your patients would not be able to handle it. Keeping your weight under control and strength to match is another element so important to prevent a fall. If excess weight was only a cosmetic issue it would not be so bad as we are so used to see fat people around. This is not my point. Most people are too weak for their weight to achieve good balance while in movement so they solve their problem by not moving and this is the wrong approach. Okay now crucify me and give me excuses why you are overweight which I am sure are excellent justifiable reasons! 👍👍👍
Excellent explanation i appreciate your helpful exercises for balance for seniors. Thanks please also would be grateful for back pain. I have difficulty in walking and trust these exercises will benefit.
What is really by far most important is core strength (midsection) and the best thing for that is planks. I've been doing them for two months and it is fixing my limp.
@@drtoddsullivan I think all such videos about balance and walking might mention the crucial importance of core strength. That is probably usually the problem.
Thanks for watching. It doesn’t have to be a step you could use a couple of books stacked up or anything that forces you to lift your leg in the air and tap on it.
I already do d I already some of these exercises and will add some of yours. After a 3a.m.fall in the dark. I found a night light helped balance for nighttime bathroom trips. Question--how efforts these exercises in the water?
@@drtoddsullivan Whoops, spell check bloop.. how effective are these exercises when done in water? I have a water exercise program that I do 3 or 4 times a week.
Thank you very much doctor for your teaching. Actually I want to ask you an advice as to how can recover from loosing balance when I swing my club. I play golf since 25 years. Now Im 76 loosing some balance when swinging. Is there any specific exercises I can do to improve the balance? Thank you in advance.
I had a almost fall months ago, that rather shook me. Would you believe that a guitar lead from my guitar somehow wrapped itself around my legs, causing me to nosedive to the floor, but I grabbed a chair. After the many many nights at pubs/clubs I have done over years, it has me beat as to why. I find this here video good. My subcontinus needs re-programing.
Very nicely explained by you. Thank you Prevent fall at all cost My father at 90 was hale and hearty..He fell down from bench and broke up hip joints. He went into bedridden and could live only 16 months Like 1 billion Indians, he was vegetarian and active
I'm 68 and do the single leg stand with both eyes closed. NOT EASY at the beginning, but little by little you can master it. I do 30 seconds on each leg. Five repetitions every morning. - Please be very very careful - do it under a door so you have both sides to grab on to.
I am impressed! My balance test is to stand on one leg while I bend over and pull a sock onto the other foot. At 78 years old that is not as easy as it sounds! I thought my balance was pretty good until I tried standing on one leg with my eyes closed. I can do that for about five seconds maximum. I hadn't realized how much of my balance came from visual input.
Just as important to single leg-balance training is a good flexibility program, the more range of motion available to your joints, the larger base of support and better your balance will be !!
From the early 60s I always remember my grandfather telling me to never sit down to put on my shoes and socks if I aways wanted to have good balance. There has been many times that I've wanted to, but I never have to this day.

No. Because we seniors would fall down with one leg stands and with the head turning and our knees would give out with the sit stand before the end.😢 I’m in day four and those 2 still have me going off in the wrong direction 😅
Yes good suggestion. Better still, you (and me) get walking keep walking. Doesn’t matter where or how fast , just make sure you are save. I am 78 yrs and training for my next town 10km run next August. Stop thinking you CANT, YOU CAN. SLOW STEADY, SURE.
