Three additional tips: 1) If you are collecting used stamps or mint hinged and want to put them in an album, the best place to buy an album are flea markets. Granted the album may be 20 years old but those stamps are reasonably priced and you can still put newer stamps on individual pages. I bought my US Plate Block album for $1.00 at a flea market. 2) Catalogues are very expensive, many public libraries (like mine) carry a full set of Scott catalogues, 3) Brick and mortar stamp stores are hard to find. I buy most of my stamps at stamp shows. Fortunately there are two monthly ones in my area. Prices are usually very good and you get your stamps immediately.

Great idea, libraries have some awesome stuff! Shipping takes forever and few types of businesses deal with collecting where I live, mostly stuff like video games, cards, cars, but not coins or stamps or dollhouses😢

There are a couple of important things that collectors need that I didn't hear mentioned, especially if you buy large packets to start your collection. 1) A Watermark Detector - some of the easiest stamps to get are the QEII Wilding issues and German stamps from between the two world wars. You can have what appears to be dozens of the same stamps but different watermarks mean you have different stamps 2) A UV Light - The United States, Canada, and Great Britain issued a lot of stamps beginning in the late 50s where they 'glow' under a UV light. I think these two items are just as important as the magnifying glass and stamp tongs. After all, before you 'store' your stamps, the fun part is identifying them

Do you have any recommendations on a Watermark Detector (mainly Canadian stamps)? I recently bought a stamp collection where the guy claimed it was all "New and never posted but "got wet"". All the backs have lost their gum which makes me think they've been posted before. Besides the missing gum, the fronts of the stamps have no markings and when I use my 385 Wavelength UV light, only the sides/areas that are supposed to glow, indeed glow. I'm thinking of selling the duplicate stamps I got, but am unsure what to list/market them as. (i.e. used vs new, etc). I also have separate stamp books for my "new" stamps and "used" stamps so am unsure where to put these ones. Any advice/expertise greatly appreciated :)

there is an more important thing to start collecting. 2/ deciding what to collect- country or topics/MNH or used. I collect GREECE, NEW ZEALAND, ENGLAND, CYPRUS, COOK ISLANDS. I started by collecting used stamps and then slowly collecting mint. i did the mistake in stamp hinges, not knowing that they disvalue by at least 1/2 the value esp on the mint stamps. i started 50 years [1972] ago.

A very good thing for beginners could be a pre prepared albun from lighthouse.. 1. it gives you a help to collect and show differences. But they are expensive.

The most useful tool in my collection is my watermark detector. Also, as I get older, my magnifying glass has become a zoom microscope because my eyes have been aging with me.

I personally have never used one so unfortunately I don't have much to share. I store stamps in a Lighthouse Hardcover Stockbook as well as MUDOR Stamp Pages for Stamp Album Binder.

"Tweezers" are for eyebrows (and Europeans). "Tongs" are for stamps.

How can I know if a set of stamps it’s worth that money or not? I saw on Facebook someone that sells 200 stamps for an amount of money and I don’t know if it’s okay or if he’s asking to much

Hi Martin, do you know the quality of the stamps and if they are mint or used? That will help determine the cost.
