Hugs! We've been homeschooling since the beginning, and my oldest turns 16 in a couple weeks. My 6 kids are the most creative, kind, sweet, enjoyable people! I absolutely love that I get to spend every day with them.

Your soo right! I just started homeschooling my kids too- and we are looked at as different. But it's been great!!! The kids r growing so well and having learned so much already at age 3 and 5. I love how u said ur kids get to spend times with the 'elders' too. That's so important.

My reasons to homeschool far outweigh the reasons to not to. I’ve homeschooled my grandson for 3 years here in the US. Absolutely love this time together with him. I’ve helped him to make great strides where in public school he had fell behind. I’m loving our journey! Homeschool life is the best for the whole family. I actually feel sorry for kids and families that don’t get this privilege!

Thanks for your comment 👍 I too feel so fortunate to be able to homeschool. So many people think it's the harder road. But once you settle in, it feels so wonderful to be spending time with my children. I often think about how sad I would be if I had to send them to school and miss out on all those sweet moments we get during our days (in between the chaotic moments as well) 😉

In the United States hundreds of thousands of families homeschool. Its pretty normal

Thanks for commenting Rachel. I feel like it's getting more normalized here. One of the first families we met was an American family who were living in Wellington, but have since moved back home. They were awesome examples of fostering their children's well being 👍

Millions of us do in the US, but it’s still VERY much taboo and against the grain. And we are judged very often.

We also homeschool and don't have close friends who homeschool. We know people from church who do it so i never looked at homeschooling as something weird. But never thought about it till this year. And im glad we started at the get go and not having to ever put our daughter in public school. I like your point of being the one to teach your kids. Not only that i feel like with kids out of the house for 6-8 hours a day its practically someone else trying to raise ur kids. I want to be the one to raise them and instill my values and morals to my kids.

I love the way you describe the slowness of the home with homeschooling! We’re in the US and considering it because schools are scary now sadly.
@homeschoolaims
@homeschoolaims Год назад
Yes a few others have mentioned this as a reason. Luckily in New Zealand we don't have that added worry (yet) 😔 but as a parent it must be terrifying to consider that. Yes I love the slowness aspect. You can still pack your days with activities, but we choose to have a few slow days in the mix, it just works better for our family 💛

I couldn’t agree with you more on EVERYTHING you said. Being bullied as a child can still effect you as a 30 year old and I didn’t learn anything from that, just got anxiety around people and I became such a introvert who doesn’t like groups of people without feeling nervous and uncomfortable.

Congratulations on thinking ahead👍 Bullying is such a cruel 'right of passage' that many people outside of the homeschooling community think is necessary to help children develop certain skills. I am sure you agree, when I say, it's a 'right of passage' that I'm comfortable in making sure my children never have to experience if I can help it.

Greetings from California. My husband is Kiwi. We homeschool our three children (11, 10 and 6 yo). They've never attended public school. Your video was really interesting to watch just as we dont hear a lot about Kiwis homeschooling. We will be moving to NZ sometime in the next 5-7 years, and i dont know if we'll continue only as our family members there haven't shared as many negatives as what we see here in the States. Depending on where you live in the US, homeschooling can be very "normalized". I have been fortunate to live in an area with lots of other homeschoolers. We have a great community, but I know it can be isolating. Thanks for the video, and your perspective!

I saw a mum in America who sits down with her kids of all ages and teaches them about budget. She teaches them what an average wage is and what each bill on average costs. They then have to budget it all and work out how much they have left (which is obviously very little). Then she taught them how to choose and buy a car that you can afford, how you can easily get into debt but how to stay out of it. I thought it was amazing.

Kiwi Mom here and I dearly wish to start homeschooling my youngest (11yrs) next year. Their are lots of reasons I have for this but one is that he has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy and had complications on his meds so that solidified the reason to me even more. I would really appreciate any comments on the process/applications to Ministry of education and how you formulated your homeschooling criteria, lessons, etc for them. Any help would be appreciated. Hello to another Kiwi Mama 😀 Welcome and thanks for subscribing. With regards to writing the exemption, I highly recommend getting Cynthia Hancox guide to writing the exemption. It provides a template and examples for about $20-$30. It made me feel so much more confident in creating my application. She is a whizz at this and at least by using her template you know you have the best shot and ticking the box with the MOE.

I see you've also checked out my video and commented on "How smart do you have to be to homeschool your children?" I hope this made you realise that you will be and there are options 👍 Also socialisation takes some effort. But you only need to find a couple of other families that you click with and you are away! As important as friendships are for your children. They are equally important for you, otherwise motherhood / homeschooling can feel lonely. All that being said. I am so happy we made this choice. There is NEVER a day I regret my choice. Instead I feel so thankful to have the opportunity to spend it with my children. Good luck with your decision. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask 💛

Honestly I want to homeschool so I can have that time with my son. Plus, I live in the United States and thoughts of school shootings terrifies me. But my main concern is if I’ll be able to teach him. The socialization does concern me a little bit too though mostly because I’m an introvert and there’s just not a whole lot to do in our area. But working with his interest is something that I want to do for him because it wasn’t done for me and here I am in my 30s not fully knowing what I want to do. The bullying is something that concerns me too. Our son is 4 and he’s already dealing with mean kids at the park. A part of me feels like I’m being overprotective and I keep getting told that he needs to learn how to defend himself. So I don’t know what to do!
@homeschoolaims
@homeschoolaims Год назад
All of these concerns are so valid. I never grew up in an environment where homeschooling was viewed as a great choice and so I had very limited support when we chose to head down this route. But after 6 months I am so incredibly happy I chose this for my daughter she is absolutely thriving 🥰 I do make sure we have social interaction and they still are exposed to kids who aren't that nice, but I work with them to navigate the situation. I personally think protecting them from the horrible aspects of society while they are young is the best gift we can give our children. They will have plenty of time throughout their adult life to experience it. I always struggle to understand why we experience such intense scrutiny for protecting our children ? 🫣 All the best with your decision, I truly hope you find a way to go on the journey of homeschooling with your son, it's such a rewarding and special one 🥰

@homeschoolaims
@homeschoolaims Год назад
Hi there. I would start off by saying that this is such a common concern, from so many parents, so you are not alone. I think it's important to remember that with our children being so young we only have to start off by teaching them how to read and write at a basic level. So as long as you have basic literacy skills, you will be fine for the first few years. Moving forward as a homeschooling parent we have the wonderful opportunity to learn alongside our children. And whilst you may not have done well (or felt smart enough at school) you now have the opportunity to find creative ways to help your children (and yourself) learn together. I truly believe this is the foundational mindset we must have as homeschooling parents. "Learning together!" My kids are teaching me new things everyday. I really hope to do a video on this topic in the next few weeks because I have a lot more thoughts around it. All the best with your decision to homeschool 👍 That being said if one of my children decides that they want to become a scientist, I may need to outsource. And equally I am ok with that too 😀😉

Hi Sam. We homeschool here in NZ. Once your child turns 6 years old, you need to obtain an exemption from the Ministry of Education in NZ. This is done by applying. It's just a process, but relatively easy to achieve. We have a wonderful woman here called Cynthia Hancox who is kind of like the Mother of Homeschooling 😉 and she offers assistance if you require it. Check out her website for more information. I am also really happy to speak further with you about it 👍 www.cynthiahancox.com/homeschooling.html

No adult would put up with a bully at work or elsewhere. Adults have the mobility and freedom to physically leave a space that feels threatening. Adults can file a complaint with HR or quit a toxic job. It is unfair to than turn around and require children to put up with bullies. How can you ask children to endure daily bullying when they do not have the support, mobility, or emotion IQ to deal with the situation? The effects of bullying last a lifetime. It is trauma that could prevent a children from health development. 😢
@homeschoolaims
@homeschoolaims Год назад
Yes it seems so sad that we have an expectation that Bullying is a "right of passage" for a child to grow up and learn from. Perhaps one of the world's weirdest (and saddest) thoughts on recent years. I am just so thankful my children are able to be removed from that and we can make a choice as to who we surround ourselves with 💖 You make great points around adults having the mobility and freedom to remove themselves, Thank you for that 🙏
