I only recently discovered Michael Kenna, and was immediately smitten. A point he emphasizes in many of his interviews is how helpful it is to study the work of other photographers, to the degree that he has gone to the locations used by some of his favorites, immersing himself fully in their oeuvre. Very much like what you're doing in your "Learn From Other Artists" series. I stumbled on this one while searching Michael Kenna. I'll now move on to the next! Thank you for your analysis of Michael's approach. A good distillation.

Something a lot of people don't get about Kenna is that the composition wasn't exactly real.He took a photo,he usually had in mind with what he wants to get out of the landscape he shooted and the he removed stuff in darkroom.Kenna was shooting on medium format,known for the capabilities it offers you for cropping and editing in the darkroom. In sort most of his talent is coming from his vision and less about his photographic skills.For example in the picture shown in 5:50,most likely in his shot there were no rocks,they probably were around there but he didn't capture them,most likely he recreated the rocks in the darkroom.Minimalism is just that,visioning something that makes sense to you and capturing just that,it rarely happens in real life,rarely you will see something isolated from uniportant things,that's what makes minimal photography so apealing.

what lens helps with minimal photography? I get It that lens does not make a picture minimal but what might one consider a good lens kit to have ? I am looking at 1 canon RF 100-500 telephoto, RF 28-70 F2 at the moment. However confused about these choices
@BonciuToma
@BonciuToma 2 года назад
It's tricky to answer because ut depends on the subject. I guess a longer focal length can help you but a 28-70mm can be more versatile. I can't give you a straigth answer.

Great idea! Another example for minimalism in landscape photography is Bruce Percy (www.brucepercy.co.uk). MK is one of his influences (I think he states it somewhere), but he's doing it in color. And he is visiting locations were minimalism works even without snow … ;)

I am interested in minimal photography and agree the season used (winter) simplifies the landscape for the focus on the subject without interference of other elements. I have taken minimal winter photos and enjoy letting my eye wander to see the subject I want to capture. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. You explained in detail without rushing through the photos how the photo was taken and why. I look forward to more videos.
