This was a straight to the point lesson devoid of annoying ego trip-induced blabbering that is the norm on RU-vid by someone who clearly knows the drill, thank you Rob!
Took me almost a year to make my thumb work independently and play songs in fingerstyle. But hey, imagine the moment I noticed it had finally clicked. Good luck all!
It is EXTREMELY rewarding when you finally start to get it as well. We have heard the advice many times... take it easy and don't move on to the next phase until you get the current phase down pat. Take your time, it is not a race to the next skill. a week spent now is worth it opposed to years of frustration. My biggest mistakes have stemmed from trying to play stuff I just did not have the foundations for. The lessons from the great players like this are not so much showing you what they are playing, but the words they say. It is easy to gloss over, but taking it slow is the number 1 tip in my opinion. Thanks Robbie, you rock!
Well said my man I’m 48 hope I didn’t leave it to late I play normal fingerstyle but this is a different animal this style but your so right bar by bar thanks for slow n me down I think I was jumping the gun and it didn’t sound right so slow and steady from now on cheers Brian Ireland 🇮🇪
Totally agree, its all a matter of repetition and muscle memory. Regarding getting frustrated, I was the same when i was younger. I couldn't play the riff from lLayla and I thought it showed my lack of talent/ability, but like you I just wasn't ready. I can play it like Eric now : )
Thank u my friend from Ireland 🇮🇪 Brian ,, I need to get this technique or I’ll lose my Mind I have the bass down to a T it’s the melody that’s screwing me up !! Thanks it’s much appreciated!! Brian
ThIs is the best way to teach thumb independence that I’ve seen and the annotation is excellent. Better than mine. Will use this with my students. Subscribing. Thank you, sir.
I've been finger picking for a few years now. My thumb independence is solid now although a lot of the time i mess up melody lines. My biggest problem is the "thumb pick" I can never get along with them. They stick out to much and they just seem to get in the way. I've tried different brands but end up going back to "raw thumb" lol Having said that, Mississippi John Hurt didn't use thumb picks. And if it was good enough for him, then it's good enough for me. But I do like that little bit of extra oomph that thumb picks produce. Great lesson though, I can still take something from this.
I like no-nonsense lessons...No "like me" or "subscribe" or faffing about telling you which finger to put on which string on which fret...just info...excellent video
I've been trying to play with thumb independence for years. took lessons from a very patient teacher. I never have been able to concur it. yet I'm able to do most rub your head/pat your stomach challenges. I love the music, but my thumb, I guess doesn't.?
