I share this deep disatisfaction with Clue, but my Mom loves classic Clue. As a compromise, we play Clue FX--an electronic "talking" version of the board game that fixes most of the problems with Clue without losing its core identity. It has the lush, gorgeous artwork of Mysterium and the public clues of Paris 1920. The suspects are completely different from the players' characters, and there is no wasted time moving from location to location. 😊
I always loved Cluedo as a kid but I could never get enough people to play it, and now I realise my lack of playing it is probably why I still have fond memories of it. Great alternatives suggested here, great video. 👍🏼
Love Mysterium and have played it many, many times. But in my opinion, the best Cluedo replacement, hands down, is Awkward Guests. I'd recommend you give it a go as it adds quite a bit more to the basic idea and is much more enjoyable.
After playing Kronologic mentioned in the video recently, I'd say this game kills off Awkward Guests for me. AG is great, but a bit messy. Kronologic is cleaner and easier to teach, and just a bit more fun. Give it a go!
When I a kid I was just IMPRESSED with Scotland Yard. Until this day I remember it as a super deep and mysterious game. I’m afraid to go back to it and see that it had the same design problems as clue, I guess haha
There is also Inkognito which is a great alternative, secretely finding who your ally is around the table and cooperating in order to achieve a mission
The approach of Paranormal Detectives, for some reason (maybe a mix of the screen and the competitive deduction), reminded me of Treasure Island... And I love Treasure Island.
I think this is a series that needs to be done by you. Next will be 6 better games then monoply, Catan, scrabble, and such. People need to know about modern versions of old games that are out now.
At a Halloween event we played Mysterium. Me being the ghost, under a white sheet and cut out holes for eyes. Kill Doctor Lucky is also a suggestion as a way better game than Cluedo, but in reverse!
2 other deduction-style games I can think of for young kids that would be better than Clue(do) are "Ghosted" & "Dinosaur Tea Party". Ghosted is effectively just the investigation process of Clue without the tedium of moving around. Each player was killed and they're trying to figure out of a list of 12 for each, who killed them, with what, and why. Players take turns asking other players questions, with the line of questioning being limited to a dice roll (the game does have a way to alter a turn if a player has solved a category for themselves), and work to cross suspects, motives, and weapons off their board until they figure it out. Not super deep admittedly, but for a 15-30 minute $10 game, it fills its niche well. Dinosaur Tea Party on the other hand, is more of a "Guess Who?" for 4 players. Players get dealt a secret identity and take turns asking each other yes/no questions (Ideally, this is all done while pretending to be as posh and upper class as possible as the game suggests). If a player's identity is guessed, they draw a new identity and the guest is removed from the board. First to 3 correct guesses wins. To me, having the extra tension of needing to either be good or not too revealing with your questions, as otherwise a different player can snipe the solution is what elevates it above the basic Guess Who game.
I think my absolute favorite game I was expecting to be here is Oh My Gods. Have you played it? It's perfect for if you like Clue but you think it's outdated. The same core mechanic of asking for information and allowing players to go around the circle until someone shows a card is still in the game. But roll and move is gone and every card in the game has a unique power allowing you to reveal it and play it for some benefit while sacrificing the fact that you've now revealed it to everyone.
Clue was my favorite game as a kid. You are 100% correct that it is time to bury it. I enjoy Sherlock and Chronicles of crime. Can't wait to try some of the other recommendations 😊
Or you could just play by the diceless rules of Clue... Each player gets 3 actions per turn. The player may skip actions, but the actions they do perform must be done in the following order: 1) move their pawn 1 to 3 spaces, 2) use a secret passage, 3) make a suggestion, 4) make an accusation. The last 3 actions above may only be done once, each, a turn. You could, however, move up to 9 spaces a turn.
An older game that avoids the "moving between rooms" silliness of Clue/Cluedo is The King of Hearts has Five Sons: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_king_of_hearts_has_five_sons
Uh can you do “phase 10” next? Though some already converted, too many insist on playing that sad and too long game. Great video, gonna save outfoxed for my nephew to safe the next generation from tired games.
Couldn't agree more. Mysterium is my #1 board game. It's one of the first modern board games I ever played and still my fave. I will never say no to playing Mysterium. I have a 5yo, 3yo, and 1yo, and the older two love playing games with us. I've heard of Outfoxed before, but I could never find good playthrough info. After this recommendation, I'm definitely donating our copy of Clue and getting Outfoxed for one of their birthdays. I've been on the fence about Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective for years. My husband and I love doing Unlock games after the kids are in bed, but lately (#4 on the way) have been too tired to bother. Maybe Sherlock Holmes will be a cozier experience we could still manage with a newborn.
Thank you for this video, I'm always in search of new mystery games, as they're my favorites! Sherlock Holmes consulting detective is THE BEST, it has this amazing atmosphere and the characters from Sherlock Holmes stories have always a perfect characterization! It's almost like reading a new novel about Holmes and Watson! I'm currently doing the number 3 of the series, the one about Jack the ripper. But I must say: I still love Cluedo, with all its limitations - I played it so many times with friends, and I'll always think of the fun I had with it (I'm playing all the Cluedo escape just for the characters, and honestly most of them are fun!) Anyway, thank you for your video, I love your humor and your recommendations!
Love your videos. I recently purchased Chronicles of Crime and I’m super excited to play but I thought there would be more cases with the base game. Are people buying the extra cases to keep playing?
@AVCook182 I've just checked and I'm afraid the reward of being in the credits is only for Patrons who pledge at the Voter LOLs tier and above. Sorry to disappoint.
Someone told me that Clue no longer has the roll to move thing any longer. Not sure if that is true, since I just heard it through hearsay. heh I guess that improves it, but yeah... so many other games replace it. I really dig Awkward Guests, Deception, and Mysterium. Sleuth is also good if you want a really stripped-down logic deduction game.
The version I have is the newest one and it's still very much roll to move. They've actually made the game more imbalanced and lucky by adding the clue deck which you draw from when you roll a one. Which speeds up the game but makes it worse. But I didn't bother getting into that because most people wouldn't know it.
Hi actualol, here are some video ideas i came up with for you that fits with your presentatios "underrated games that deserve the spotlight" "Games I thought I'd love.. but I didn't " "Top board games that cause the most arguments " Maybe a video on "Board games vs real life situations" , like for example when someone is trying to negotiate their way out of a loss, with your humorous approach.
