The sticky hand idea is cool, but if you hit Dollar Tree before a holiday, they sell sticky decorations for windows in your home. $1 gets you lots and lots of gels-pumpkins, skulls, bloody hands, reindeer, bunnies, etc..
@ziiofswe
@ziiofswe 7 лет назад
I actually tried the sticky hand tip a few years ago. Didn't work. I guess they weren't fresh or something because they barely stuck better than butter in a hot pan. (Not saying it can't work if you're lucky and find yourself some quality sticky toys... mine were crap.)
@wonderming1
@wonderming1 7 лет назад
ziiofswe hmm, are you using coated or clear heads? make sure the clear heads are clean.
@ziiofswe
@ziiofswe 7 лет назад
Mostly clear heads of the dual layer kind, like Remo Pinstripe and some Evans, don't remember their name. And the heads I tested on were close to brand new. (Probably Evans, the Pinstripes are fairly damped by themselves.) I wouldn't expect the sticky toys to stick to coated heads.
@wonderming1
@wonderming1 7 лет назад
ziiofswe OK. one thing I did was cut out squares and double them up. they stick to each other very well. the moon gels tend to be thicker. thats why they work on drums, but not so good for holidays on windows.

I love his sense of quest, a guy after my own heart.
@RyanAlexanderBloom

I found a CB child sized beginner drum set on the side of the road last year. I teach, so that was good for my students. I also collect broken cymbals and cut them down. About 1/3 times you get a new cymbal worth playing... the other two times you are better off scrapping it altogether. Have had people just give me broken cymbals before so its like a free cymbal of a slightly smaller size. I also found a throne in a dumpster recently. Cant beat that. Works and everything.

I would like to add, this is off the subject a little but I have noticed that if you buy from the start some top notch equipment, it’s easer to sell and get a little more money for if you get in a bind. So, yes, I agree with you. Keep all of your beat up and trashed drum equipment. It can always be scrapped , used again someway, or some other unknown use that may present itself. LOL! I always keep a travel set so to have double or triple of everything will also give you the ability to get out of a jam also.

#2. Insted of moon gell. Touch the head close to the rim with a finger and thumb coming to the center till you like the sound. remove head. Place a 1inch strip of very light felt across the drum in the place where you had your finger and thumb. Replace head. Ahh. Just right. And much cleaner. Always the same. Never have to wonder "wheres my moon gell."

"Ghetto Bell"??? Try this: cast-aluminum pot lids! Yes, aluminum pot lids... try various sizes of pot lids, I swear by my mother You Will Love Pot Lids! They're loud, and have great sustain so you can always mute or choke them for effects. Gather several different sized pot lids and you can play them in pitch to a full song, and you can even play two at once to create harmonies with the bell sounds. Several years ago I once played "chime bells" in a Renaissance vocal group, the group leader and I gathered a bunch of cast-aluminum pot lids and took the lids to a friend who lathed the lids to pitches in the key range of C major... I then mounted the lids in an old china cabinet on dowels formed into a 3-tier "rack" with the back side of the china cabinet decorated with a fancy drape, backside facing the audience and played my "bell chimes" (pot lids) along to someone who played a dulcimer as we accompanied the Renaissance group in a concert... we performed inside a cathedral. My pot lids were loud enough that no amplification was needed. Later on I used some pot lids as "knock-out bells" in a garage band. Just drill the pot handle holes wider to fit on a cymbal stand. Mount the lids Upside-Down on the cymbal stand so you get the best sound striking the Edge of the pot lid. My man, cast-aluminum pot lids sound as good as Zil-bells, and they do Not disappoint! Cast-aluminum oval Fish platters also work well as bells. Try it! :D

This is pretty obvious but it has saved me tons of money. When your sticks split, use clear box tape to repair them. They'll last quite a bit longer. It doesn't add much weight and won't gum up your cymbals like duct tape or electric tape.. Gluing works too but takes longer and you may need the stick to keep playing. I have a head on my floor tom which has about a 6" split in the top ply. I use the same tape to keep it going. Has been that way for almost too long. Just have to replace it occasionally.

Funny you should mention those sticky hand things. I have a tip if you want to upgrade your entry line cymbal without spending money. Simply by hand hammering them, on the video I made I have use brass cymbal and the sound have changed a lot but it will work even better with b8 cymbals. I recommend hammering them on a hot room or outside on a really hot day because metal has a lot less chance of cracking in the process. Or when the cymbal is cracked around the bell I cut it and make a very cool sounding cymbal ring. Around the edge its even easier you cut it and get a new unbroken smaller cymbal.

Sticky gels. When they get dirty and non-sticky I wash them with soap, rinse and dry them poof like new. Also I like going to Party City and buying a large page of sticky shapes, they work just as good and it's 2 dollars for like 20 shapes.

I spent like 8,500$ over for the whole sets of drum and accessories.. from the drum rug, sticks, cymbal stands else. of course I bought fine drums. it costs 4,500$ for shell packs and 2,500$ for cymbals But if you concern to purchase the drum set, you must know that you should spend money more cos drum is not the permanent instrument, and there are many consumable supplies have inside as a personal think.. at least 3,000$ gonna be the minimum amount for total

depending on country this one but it works occasionally in england; some tips have little shops on the side sometimes run by charities, they almost never tend to know what they have in terms of instruments and when they do they can't price them too high as they're obviously second hand, i know of a few instances of this being brilliant; i bought a snare for £1.50 with my dad about 10 years ago, turns out it's a beverley cosmic 21, my friend bought a pearl export kit for £50, my dad bought a fender squire silver series bass for £40, i bought an acoustic guitar for £10, i bought a set of stands for around £5 if i remember right. long story short if there's a tip shop near you try to check it once every week or two because there's occasionally ridiculously cheap musical gear

theaveragealex I can't figure out what a "tip shop" is called outside of the UK. It doesn't help that searching Google only gives me results for Top Shop...

One really good tip I've found to save you hundreds, or even thousands of dollars is to sell your entire kit. It works really well.

Remo heads are way better for saving cash, if you don' get the coated. Fiberskyn or renaissance don't have a degradeable coating. They never ose their sound, but evans and others seem to go dead and flat after only a couple months. I think it's because of the glue joint rather than crimped hoops. Supposedly crimping puts a lot of stress on the film when manufacturing. Also there is no need to buy a nice kit except for aesthetics. I just bought a $40 snare drum that sounds as good as any I have heard. The key is tuning. Same thing goes for cymbals. Sure, there's a minimum standard of quality you have to pay for, but after that it's all just preference. There is no way a $500 cymbal sounds better than a $150 one. Different, but not better. Also stands as long as they work don't have to be expensive. There's so much that the marketing guys try to sell you, but most of it is completely unnecessary.

Indeed. Why _buy_ dampening rings when you already have them for free?

I took a cracked ride cymbal and took a metal saw to extract the bell and sharpie'd my own logo on it. Then scrapped the rest of the cymbal.
