It has been a little over 6 months since I bought the Fujifilm GFX 50s and the Mitakon 65mm 1.4, since it has been half a year of shooting I thought I would answer some questions I had been asked over these last few months.

Good stuff, as always. Shallow DoF is only part of the medium format look. I would argue that the mf look is mostly the wider field of view one gets when using the longer focal lengths of medium format. There’s that compression, but it’s wide vs FF and smaller formats. And though the GFXes aren’t that much bigger than FF, they have a look that is hard to explain, even at smaller apertures. To me anyway. The look is much more evident on 645 or larger.

You're right GFX's do have a look that's hard to explain, now thinking about it, the photos I've taken on my older Mamiya 645 look closer to a 35mm or full frame camera than medium format when compared to the GFX

I got my GFX after years with both full frame and crop cameras. I kept my X-T5 though. And honestly my 50S II is close to the worst camera I have in most ways. Only beaten by the X-T100 (within my collection). But what it does have in comparison to the X-T5 is a better sensor. Not only is it higher resolution (and the pixels are bigger) but it’s also a Bayer sensor, which is much better than X-Trans. I keep both systems because they both have strengths. The X-T5 lets me use much lighter lenses and it lets me use long focal lengths without having to carry a heavy lens (70-300mm). The 50S II lets me get super clean photos with much better details and it lets me use the Mitakon 65mm (which would be hard to replicate on a crop camera). The X-T5 focuses faster, shoots more photos per second and has much better video capabilities. Over all I don’t think the 50S II is an amazing all around camera, but it’s great for when you don’t need to react fast and don’t want to carry a heavy backpack.
@taranspictures
@taranspictures 7 месяцев назад
I don't think you should be comparing the xt5 and 50s ii, they are for entirely different needs, I wouldnt compare my 50s to my A7iii because I use them for their strengths. The GFX cameras aren't meant to be perfect all around cameras, they are meant to be used in specific environments such as landscape work, editorial work, portraits, product photography etc but all in a much slower paced more controlled environment where as you can use the xt5 anywhere really do I guess the xt5 is actually the better camera when you put it like that but that's because the GFX cameras aren't meant to be used like that. I think the exception is the 100s ii, it seems like Fuji wanted to make that camera be able to do everything

The GFX 50s body itself is actually not heavy at all, but the Mitakon is a beast. For a walkabout kit, I highly recommend the GF 50mm 3.5 as it is light weight, fast, quiet and accurate AF and has a bit of weather sealing. For what it's worth, the 55 1.7 is an amazing lens, not as heavy as the Mitakon but definitely heavier than the 50 3.5. Cheers!
@taranspictures
@taranspictures 7 месяцев назад
I really want to try the 55 1.7, it looks lush. Yeah I was surprised how light the 50s was when I first got it, as soon as I put the mitakon on the camera, it was a different story

noooo way... the gfx is distinct. when you put up the comparison i was like are we seeing the same thing because i see different. you do i agree have to know the camera but the 50 meg fuji sensor is a legend. when your wide open you need double the shutter that you would use otherwise. its a little secret to wide open shooting that some already know. yes gotta be in a little extra shape to rock the weight in a street setting. rock one lens, a zoom because youll wanna lighten the kit but that resolution and the butter backrounds from the 50s and r sensor is worth it. its the tonal falloff.. a 50 mill sensor on a gfx vs 5omill on a sony isnt the same and you have different sized pixels... sony af yes is wonderful but to a slower ace the fuji has the soul.

Thanks for the video and belay my comment on your previous video as I was seriously considering the GFX but not anymore....I'm about to switch to Sony from m43 so news of a lens that might quench my medium format DOF 'look' desire on the Sony system is good to hear. I still may consider a Pentax 67 down the line too 😬

The results of the images are well worth the weight. Maybe I'm used to big heavy flagship Nikon bodies but to me, the Fuji is no heavier than my D5 and by a longshot lighter than any of my medium format film cameras.

Hi Taran, I got the 50R and mitakon a while ago and find that taking full length portraits with just the right amount of foreground and background definitely gets the MF look. I was a pentax 67 shooter and haven’t found anything as close yet. Haven’t tried the voigtlander 40mm though, I sold it a while back after using it on film cameras 😣
@taranspictures
@taranspictures 8 месяцев назад
I recommend checking out Doomstache on Instagram, you would be surprised how similar the voigtlander looks compared to the mitakon. I may have to purchase the voigtlander and some point and see how it compares to the mitakon with side by side comparisons.

For 45mm solution, I use autofocus adapter and a EF mount Tamron 45mm f/1.8, it can cover the sensor nicely and get very shallow DOF as well, but I don't really like the color from that len. Just for the reference.

Just searched it up and the depth of field looks great, I'll have to look into it more and compare to the native gf 45 2.8

If your main goal is to upload photos to Instagram, here is a good reason to use a 3:4 sensor like the GFX (or Hasselblad or Micro 4/3), intead of a 2:3 of full frame cameras: For the 2:3 photo, the crop to fit Instagram's 4:5 aspect ratio results in a loss of 25% of the original photo. For the 3:4 photo, the crop results in a loss of approximately 6.25% of the original photo.
@taranspictures

It's a very useful aspect ratio

It’s funny. I’m sat here with an A7R3a and the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 - it’s become my favourite lens ever, pretty much. But I wanted to go Leica M10 and scale stuff down whilst keeping FF minimum and would love the rangefinder experience. However when you look at used M10 prices, it’s about £1K less to get a brand new 50Sii and the kit zoom 35-70., which is kinda mad. With this in mind, it seems daft to pass up the MF for less money! So that has lead me to here…where I’m now in a hole deciding which way is out - medium format and a smaller full frame camera (like A7C) to satisfy the non-MF occasions (APS-C Fujis are almost as pricy as an A7C). Or do I just gun for the M10 that does all of it pretty much but costs more. Great to hear your experiences on your set up anyway. The Mitakon is not for me by default because if it’s size/weight, but the system it’s self is appealing with alternative lenses. I have a bunch of Minoltas to try on it to.
@taranspictures
@taranspictures 7 месяцев назад
Personally I would say don't go with the Leica, while they do have their strengths, it's just not worth the money in my opinion. I'd say the A7C would be a good way to go for the small set up and features
@stone_rodger
@stone_rodger 7 месяцев назад
@@taranspictures I currently own 2 M mount Voigtlanders for a Minolta CLE, so I’d literally just be buying the M10 for that path. But as mentioned GFX medium format is about a grand cheaper and that makes me wanna forget about the Leica and go GFX and some smaller camera haha. My long term plan was use CLE as film camera and buy M10 so that they share lenses.

Re size: I’ve considered getting an X-E4 to get something smaller compared to my X-Pro3 haha. Interestingly I want to pair it with a Voigtlander 27mm f2… so a compact-for-its-aperture 40mm equivalent Voigtlander. :) Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing!

I'm the wrong person to ask, I've never tried a zoom lens on the GFX system and I don't really like zoom lenses in general since I like fast apertures. Kyle McDougall has the 32-64 (I think) and he said it was a great lens, it's a no thrills lens but it has great sharpness and no flaws

It is not really the same, but the XT5 with the Voigtlander 35 f.0.95 gives back a very nice image...and I think 90% of people can't really see a difference between a MF and a APSC...moreover, I think that a camera that hold you back, in terms of going out to shoot because is to heavy it is not worth it...I was thinking to buy a GFX lately, I have been to a shop, asked for the body and two lenses...when I have "felt" the weight...I said...ok thank you...I need a sherpa :D I'm joking but not really...
@taranspictures
@taranspictures 5 месяцев назад
You do get used to weight very quickly, I only mentioned it in this video because I stopped using the GFX for a while and when I picked it back up it was quite heavy. I think most people could tell the difference between aps-c and medium format, there is a very distinct look between the two.

comparing a system when using a off brand lens? i own that lens your comparing.... its ok.... short comings but the look is why i bought it and has its use. the gfx system has the 110mm legend one of the best portrait lenses of all time... the gfx lense system quality and color is second to none. so if you know how to use the system and own most of the lenses your opinion is likely different. you have to be smart with the weight and moving the system.. smarter not harder with this system or any system but especially this system. if your gonna just this system on the mitikon lens i am sorry... that's not a fair take.
