The KHS at the end peaked my interest, mainly because it uses a 2x drivetrain. I don't tour, yet, but if I did I would much rather use a 2x setup. However what I would do differently from the KHS is use an 11-34 rear cassette and a square taper bb with a mtb crankset and a 22/42. I speak in ratios instead of g.inches and so the final low on the KHS is .76. However with my setup the final low is a .67 and on top of that it has nice close ratios which are key to maintaining efficiency. I actually have a bike with this setup. I took a Target Schwinn Trailway hybrid and made it into a drop bar monster with 2.0 tires. The setup works great! I use the 42t to get to the trails and drop it into the 22t. And those close ratios are just as good in the trails. I did the same thing with my fat bike. I replaced the 1142/32 with an 11-34/24 11 speed Ultegra cassette. I had to omit the 11t because the freehub doesn't have the space but it doesn't matter as I spin out at 19mph. I am all about cadence and efficiency so I would rather lose the high gearing. Great video series btw. I've watched all of your videos!!

The Titanosaur is very interesting and I would like to see more. I am not sure if it actually rides well, if you're average sized. Also adressing the nice gear ratio of the last bike in the video was a good thing. I made a similar thing with my Ritchey Break-Away Ascent with 46/30 in front and 11/42 rear. 1x on touring bikes doesn't work with chain-shifting-mechanisms for me at the time. Thx.

While the nerd in me loves the innovative and unusual stuff, it’s the entry level stuff I want to see more of! As a rule, there’s not a lot of money out there at the moment. Even my AU$1600 Merida Silex was a stretch and most people I know hesitate to go above $2K on a new bike. So, just to be contrary...more of the value bikes please! Meanwhile...love your work.

If you don't mind me asking: How happy are you with the Silex? I've have had an eye on it for a while but no opportunity to look at one in person, let alone test ride one. The thing that stands out for me the most is that it seems to come from a different angle than most gravel bikes - namely making a MTB more roady instead of making a roadbike more offroady if that makes sense. Would you agree?

Hi, Alee. I was really excited when I saw your information on the KHS Grit 440 in your recent update to the Buyer's Guide, so I messaged KHS. They are unaware of an 11x42 & stated the Grit 440 has a rear cassette of 11x34. Below is the message I sent to KHS. They responded that you must have got your information from a source with a typographical error. I was really hoping for that gearing, but maybe it will come one of these years from SRAM. Little chance Shimano will ever get gearing correct for bikepackers. Btw, just read your entire Bikepacking Bike Buyer's Guide for 2021 & loved it! As an avid cyclist for decades, I still learned plenty, especially when it comes to bike fitment! Thanks for putting out high quality information I haven't seen elsewhere! BG Hello, KHS. I would like to buy the GRIT 440 Gravel bike that Aussie Alee Denham, author of The Bikepacking Bike Buyer's Guide for 2021 claims has a 48x32 crank chainrings & the Mullet rear cassette of 42x11. Alee just put out a youtube video updating his Buyer's Guide stating this information, but is it possible the bike is equipped with that gearing in Australia but not in the US? No bike parts company, including Shimano & SRAM or any bike manufacturing company have gearing options like Alee described on a stock bike, so I have my doubts. However, if you offer that version he describes, I want a KHS GRIT, & there will be thousands of others that feel the same way!!! What say you? Respectfully, BG

My lbs converted my Mason Bokeh with Shimano GRX from 1x to 2x. I was surprised when the mechanic said we could leave the 11-42 cassette fitted (with no spacers or adaptors of any sort), as I understand it invalidates the warranty and just won't work well. 5000 flawless km later, I am still nervously waiting to see what the problem is. I hesitate to recommend doing it, but it seems to be working for me. It would be interesting to hear if anyone else has tried it.

I like the list. Some really near bikes to consider. I'm still leaning very heavily towards the Priority 600x, though this is mainly because I own the Priority 600 and have been in love with it. I feel the 600x would work a bit better on a lot of the terrain I have near me, though I do intend to push the 600 a little more to its limit once the snow is melted on a lot of the trails.

It would be great if in future you could mention (also suggestion for your buyers guide) if these frame take road/gravel, mtb or boost chansets. A key selling point for me, is a narrow Q-factor.
@renaissancecyclist9120
@renaissancecyclist9120 3 года назад
The MaHall bike is interesting in the fact that it is built around boost (or even super boost rear if you need extra extra clearance) while still maintaining a 68mm BB shell. Super narrow Q-factor and capacity for large chainrings/gates ring meets large volume tires. It's a tough combination to get right and another reason why we built the bike around 500mm chainstays.

Haven't seen much from you in awhile. Hopefully that is a good sign your doing well and enjoying life. Just wanted to say you inspired us(along with a bike touring friend) to chase a double dream of sorts. We wanted to buy a sailboat (combined with bikes) and so we bike toured the pacific northwest of the united states during the pandemic in the middle of winter. It was extremely difficult psychologically just being wet, cold, in the wind, and completely isolated, no coffee shops to stop in, no places to warm up, it was like a wilderness trek thru a populated place. We do have extensive biking and camping experience in Minnesota in the winter but being wet is a whole other matter indeed. We set off and biked almost to the Canadian boarder, then we met an Argentinian whom had an off shore cruiser he couldn't keep. Now we are working on her and getting her ready to take us to the dustra.

I'm now more than ever convinced there is one bike that is suitable for everything I want to do with it; gravel rides, short ride to the city, bike packing and even a nice tour ride with road bike friends. But what do you think of electric bikes? My ideal bike is a bike with broad clearance for tires, gravel handlebars and geometry, Rohloff and belt driven, all of the packing possibilities with internal routing for dynamo etc, and I would have loved a electric motor in it too... best I can find for now is the Tout terrain with a Pendix aftermarket motor...

I like your videos, but I find it rather remarkable that you promote touring bicycles with fixed non-replaceable derailleur hangers. Given the abuse these bicycles face, this is a major weakness and could easily compromise the longevity of the bike. Of course you can straighten a bent steel derailleur hanger, but this may lead to the paint flaking off and subsequent rust, not to mention progressive metal fatigue with repeated adjustments.

Thank You for sharing update of the news in bikepacking bikes market. I've recently ordered Faran 2.0 frameset to build up a bike I'd need. Variant geometry was one of main selling point for me. While watching Your video, it got to mine attention that KHS Grit has a low gear ratio as well. I am deciding what drivetrain to use on Faran, so I am taking examples of other branded bikes combinations. I see, that KHS 48/32 chainrings and 11-42 casette give a total deraileur capacity of 47T while the Shimano states, that GRX 810 rear deraileur maximum capacity is 40T. My question, how is this possible to use this combination whilst exceeding capacity limit by 7T ? Is it safe to use ? (I assume, in this case, it's better not to accidentally go large to large combo here). Any modifications required to use these parts ? ThankYou

Hey, we love watching your videos and we're now planning our own bikepacking adventure but we're struggling to agree on a tent for us to share! Do you have any recommendations?? Any ideas would be much appreciated!

did you order it from the US? Once the CEO said in an interview that they had a distributor in Germany but I did not find out anything about this.

For me goal is custom titanium frame, rohloff speed hub, 29er, carbon belt.
@dougfromsoanierana
@dougfromsoanierana 3 года назад
If money is tight you could pair a modern (disc brake) steel or aluminum frame with a Rohloff and chain drive/tensioner and get a somewhat similar experience.
@BikepackingJourney
@BikepackingJourney 3 года назад
@@dougfromsoanierana carbon belt is the future, chain was never good for long trips. You can use steel or Alu frame but belt and rohloff are game Changer here. Frame is all about balance between weight and durability

A bike for pavées/cobblestones? Wagon wheels seem a bit too far, but in the right direction. Rohloff gears, belt drive, hydraulic disc brakes, dynamo lighting
