Walking all day in full sun in upf40+ pants last year in Scotland - no trees. Only noticed overnight and following day I had been burnt through these, not badly but now only wear upf50+ pants (along with similar rated sun hoodie and gloves - I know but it works for me) and haven't had a problem since. Thanks for uploading, Tim. 👍

Do you have a sun hoodie recommendation, one for the UK if possible?

The reason I even tune into videos like this is to gather info. You had me interested in the joggers but no mention of pocket configuration if any and weight. Little stuff like that !! CHEERS!

I have 100% been sunburned right through a t-shirt; Cotton and synthetic. Wool is interesting. Careful with that man.

A first layer of foil would prevent that :)

Don't forget, it can be overcast and you get burned... a trekking umbrella is another idea... "Sun-protection is given by a combination of 3 things, the density of the fabric construction, the type of yarns used and its colour."

I never know why, if your pants are too long -- get them shortened... You certainly have a laundry list of problems you need to accommodate, I hope you get them fixed! Safe travels👍

I have that Kuiu fleece and i LOVE it. Comes with me on every trip. It's great for hiking in, for camp and to sleep in! That said, it will not keep you particularly warm at rest if there's a breeze of any kind. Excellent UL article of clothing. I've had mine for over 3 years now and it's going strong other than a couple of burn holes from fires.

The Kuiu Peloton 97 is perfect in its category! - Much lighter weight than typical fleeces, while still 80% as warm. - Dries super quick. Packs super small for a fleece. I love mine. I added my own drawstring to the bottom hem to make it even warmer.

I’ve been wearing the Kuiu 97 since before COVID. Really nice piece of gear. It will pill where the sternum strap rubs against it, but this has proven to be more of a cosmetic issue than anything else. Pair the Kuiu 97 with the MontBell Ex Light Windshirt and you’ve got an active layer that’s warm down to 28 F. While it’s lightweight and doesn’t “seem” warm, as you say, it really is surprisingly warm and is a clutch piece of UL gear while on the move in cold, wet conditions. It’s also comfortable next to the skin if needed. UL clothing in general is expensive and doesn’t play well with Velcro. I’ve eliminated all Velcro from my kit, as a result. I was sick of everything snagging on it.
@timbschwartz
@timbschwartz 7 дней назад
I'm excited to try it out! And agreed, velcro is the worst. Trying to get rid of as much of it as possible haha

Got to be sobo PCT! Have a blast - Washington is the hardest state IMO, probably smart to get it out of the way while you are fresh (though that might just be because I did it at nobo 😂), anyway, hopefully you will do weekly videos. Enjoy!

Glad to see people still praising Altra shoes. I've never understood the whole moving to Topo movement that everyone is doing. For Topo, their options are super limited and their zero-drop shoe doesn't even have the same cushion as the Timp! And Altra still has a wide range of shoes outside of the popular favorites if you think the cushion isn't right for you.

ive used my alpha 90 3-5 times per week since 12/2022 and it holds up (minimum 70 nights out on hikes, worn with out worries in various Scandinavian biomes) , when people talk about it fragile i dont know how they do it, i now have alpha cap, long johns and sleeping/camp socks and they also hold up fine.

Really don't believe our outdoor activities are the same. I like thin pants but i don't want so thin all stickers are drawing blood. I hiked all over America in boots. Don't see any reason to change that now. I like ankle support. I have bad knees from military service. Im forced to wear braces or fall down alot. Took the VA 25 years to admit my ACL and meniscus is torn. They claim its not able to be fixed. Rain mits are light but a folding cup not so much! Seems very ultra. Watching these videos showing off gear really shows me how things have changed from my younger years. We learned survival training just incase. That sounded bad so now its bushcraft. Now people give advice that's that totally against everything ive heard from boyscouts to military. Wonder how many have no idea on how to read a topo map? Wonder how many don't know how to make signals or trail markers? Wonder how many ultra light backpackers would know how to start a fire with no lighter? Some times gear is carried just with the hope of never needing it. That is what kills me about many videos ive seen. I haven't used this so ill never need it. What happens if you do? This goes for the crazy people with the 20lbs survival knife they have for every situation but they leave it home because its to heavy for most trips. Survival situations happen because of poor planning. Uncomfortable situations happen because of good planning but unfortunate incidents. It's best never get into a survival situation by preparing for what could happen. We had a saying in Ranger bat. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and always at the worst time! Think before, action. This is just my observations and opinions not made about anyone in general just what I see.
@timbschwartz
@timbschwartz 7 дней назад
Thanks for the comment, Richard! Agreed, its a constant trade off between weight and "what if." I think a big part of this equation is where you're backpacking - if I'm literally in the middle of nowhere a greater degree of caution is warranted, whereas on well used trails I tend to be more comfortable with a very minimal kit.
