Sick of your drawings looking not quite real, even when the proportions are pretty accurate? This video exposes 6 common drawing techniques, which individually, and certainly together, can create a very 2d, cartoon-like effect. And for each of them, there is a better way, which is also outlined and demonstrated in a second drawing. If you want to have a go drawing the same scene, you'll find the reference photo on the channel Community Page.

That's explained so well it should be in a "for idiots" series. Thanks a lot. And I really appreciate the absence of any annoying music.

Haha. Good teaching makes everything seem simple, so I’ll take that as a compliment. Glad it helped. 😀

Another great video. I especially like the comparison of the 2 drawings which for me really illustrates your points. Thank you.

Avoiding the heavy outline is probably my biggest struggle right now, especially when "freehanding" with no pencil under-drawing. The tip on more realistic shadows by following the forms on which they "lay" is a huge one for me, too. Wrestled with that in about 5 different studies of the same object last night. :D What I've REALLY discovered is that I've got to be more patient and start from the very beginning learning a lot of these concepts (I picked up a pen to draw for the first time on January 1st :D). Excellent video as always!

You’re learning a lot, it sounds, which is how you’ll race ahead. All the best with it. 😀

Thanks Stephen! I quite like the stylised effect 😅. But its better to male the textures look realistic. I am guilty of outlining the building 😂, but this week I will resist except for intentional shadow or darker areas.

Cartoons are great if that’s what you want to draw. But if you don’t, I hope these help. 😀

Great video Stephen! Finding your videos very helpful. Understanding the concepts in this video helps as much with realism as it does with deliberate cartooning. I found the foliage patterning better in the "cartoonish" image though. The foliage in the second one captures the firm but the straight lines feel a bit distracting.
