About the last tip. This is why the more languages you know, the easier it is to learn new languages. I know Ukrainian, Russian, English and Polish and it is super easy for me to find associations and shortcuts both in grammar and vocabulary. Learning languages is the most useful thing ever)
Boa tarde Sandra e tudo....if you are not into "novelas" here are two alternative with subtitles on RTP catch up that might be suitable. Momentos Selvagens has ten, 50-minute episodes. It's very visual and they speak with gaps in between sentences which is great for my brain to catch up with what I hear without being overwhelmed with the speed needed to process normal, informal dialogue. The other is Tesouros da Europa, also with subtitles.

Wonderful tips. I'd be wary to associate a word like Advocado with avocado. That word combo becomes guacamole in my brain. Advocado/Attorney reminds me of the English word Advocate. I expect both come from the same Latin root. Equating Advocado with Advocate would make more sense inside by brain. I really appreciated your first tool - to speak aloud words and phrases. Nothing points out my holes in learning better than trying and failing. If I was an actor, (I'm not), I would repeat my lines over and over out loud to learn them. It's not hard to see the same results learning a language. Thanks again.
Hi - my tip, (maybe more of an aspiration than something I achieve lots) is to carry around a slip of paper with my most awkward vocabulary issues of the day written on it - then throughout the day I can give it a quick peek and try and nail the problem words. Each day a new list, but the key thing is not too many words, but making sure of checking on them regularly. And the other one is learn Portuguese with your husband - we speak Portuguese to each other every day over breakfast, just chatting about our day ahead, thoughts, ideas etc. Might not be accurate but it's fun learning and you find gaps in how to phrase things.
Hi Rachel! Those are 2 great ideas. Taking notes of your struggles is huge! I ask my students to do the same when they watch tv, specially with closed captions. That way you can easily take notes and discuss them. Is a fun and productive way to learn. Thanks for sharing!
Advogado sounds like advocate, which is what a lawyer will do for you. The latin root is extremely helpful recognizing a word meaning. I don't know how avocado relates to lawyer.

Hi Roman! Good question! I see myself as a pure bilingual. I lived in the US until I was 9 and until then I spoke mostly English. I would visit the US regularly so never lost touch with the English. However, some people tell me I do have a bit of an accent.

I was born in Serpa to a Luso- American mother ( so, I can run for President 😆) and an Alentejano Pai. I returned to California, circa a year. Yet, my Umbilical Cord was never severed. I returned in '70, '72, and to study in '74 through '76. Then in '81- '82, '85 and lastly 1990. However, if I had your level of Portuguese fluency, it would have made my Portuguese Odysseys easier 😋 😄 😊. My Portuguese is horrible, yet I can't shake my accent and I'm nowhere fluent in Portuguese...more like a Rude Alentejanoese. However, I am going to sit in the front row of your Portuguese Classes.

Hello Sandra, yours is a great site but why " Faster " I think learning should be a pleasure. Why set up hurdles at the start ? What is the hurry ? I think people should go slow to help it " stick ". Slow and easy does the job otherwise you could miss important information.

@@learneuropeanportuguese Portuguese from Portugal ( the real deal) is not a dialect, "portuguese" from Brasil can be considered a dialect as they don't speak portuguese, they use portuguese to speak something else. Wrong use of verbs, wrong meaning of terms, silly idiomatic expressions, etc. Following your logic, african portuguese is missing. Quite a few of them! Oh and asian portuguese too!
@TaoDJ I'm so sorry but you're the true and only asshole around here. You seem to be an expert in portuguese language but you're not! Brasilian people disrespects so badly portuguese grammar that they've arrived to the point of not understanding, at all, portuguese from Portugal! I repeat; verbes wrongly used, meanings completely obliterated and even inverted, sily idiomatic expressions, etc and etc. All other portuguese language countries respect correct portuguese whitch is the only way to promote and preserve it. Plus, portuguese DOES NOT have dialects, it has different PRONOUNCIATIONS.
