Now with better gas mileage and slightly more power, the Mazda CX-30 is luxurious and fun for the budget, but it also comes with some notable downsides. A story all too familiar for the Mazda brand.

I have my 2024 Mazda CX30 for a month now, and love everything about it. The very luxurious interior. The handling. The quiet and comfortable ride. The ease of parking it in tight spaces. The excellent maneuverability in city traffic. The very simple and elegant lines of the sporty exterior. I also find it very easy and quick to hand wash. I frankly have not found any drawbacks or negative thing to complain about. Yes, it has a very tight and small interior, but so what!? as a single guy, my partner and I are totally fine with the interior space. THIS IS NOT A FAMILY CAR; so I don't understand why most car critics even make its tight interior as an issue? As a matter of fact my cousin who is married with one kid absolutely loves his CX-30.

I agree. The reviewers always seem mystified that people buy a smaller car, because there are bigger cars on the market. Not just talking about the CX-30. It is a general thing. Any review of the Crosstrek mentions that you could get a Forrester. Any review of the HRV mentions that the CRV is a better choice because it is bigger.

For anyone that's on the fence about this car: Did A TON of research trying to decide between this, the VW Taos, and a Ford Escape.... We wanted a car of this size because we already have a Tundra for the kid/roadtrips/etc. We needed a second vehicle to safely and reliably get us from point A to B around the city. If you are small people (under 6ft) you will be ABSOLUTELY fine in the cx-30 and so will any passengers because you can move your seats up. The way we see it, a back row of seats and a trunk is a total bonus, because we don't really need it. If that happens to be your situation too...this car will be great for you. The Escape has a ton of room but the upper-tier package tried to WOW us with a ton of bells and whistles that I doubt will work properly in 5 years. Additionally, it was not priced competitively at all. Also it's kind of ugly. Rav4 ended up being too pricey too, but is obviously much more reliable. Ultimately these were both much bigger than we needed. The Taos is priced very well, but has a lawn mower engine and cannot compete with Mazda's reliability, even if it is a bit more spacious. Anecdotally, I know several people who have a lot of issues with their new VW's. We liked the interior and look of the Taos, but it doesn't compare to the Mazda in terms of materials. The infotainment system: The knob thing is extremely easy to use. I don't know why so many youtubers complain about it. Seriously, you will be used to it after a couple of days. No wireless car play is annoying but I was told that's a chip shortage thing. Visibility: Yep, could be better. However, we were able to cram more safety features into our Premium package than with any of the competition. So I hope that helps someone. If you're not hauling big people and don't need a ton of gimmicky features, it's a great car. If you want all the latest and greatest tech and this is going to be your main family vehicle, go bigger

That is the thing most car buyers fall victims for; the extra trimmings! all those extra trimmings will in fact stop working properly as initially intended years down the road; and I am talking from experience! it will be an unexpected extra expense, that will also affect your car's trade in value if not repaired. My previous car was a 2008 Honda CRV base model; and because of it being a base model I never had a maintenance or mechanical issue with it. As a matter of fact my insurance paid me $8.800 for it

Could you tell me if the driving position in the CX-30 feels more like a hatchback than an SUV? I have a Kia Soul, and in it, my driving position and visibility feel high enough. However, when I see a CX-30 on the streets, it looks more like a hatchback (really short) rather than an SUV, especially compared to the Toyota Corolla Cross, VW Taos, Kia Seltos, or even the Nissan Kicks. I love this car, but I would like to sit higher for better visibility. What do you think?

Why don’t you compare it to a car that it’s comparable. And then you have your opinion white is not going to be popular why it’s going to not sell that many or not attract too many people at Pillar bullshit

I think they're a good alternative to Toyota. You spend less and the quality is comparable. You don't pay the Toyota tax (higher price) and the reliability is also comparable especially since they have some Mazda's being made on the same assembly line as Toyotas. Toyotas interiors are also more utilitarian while Mazda is more of a luxury look which I prefer.

I have a 2021 (August '21 production) CX-30 Preferred I bought in September 2021. I chose the CX-30 as a better value with its safety and convenience features I wanted, doesn't have a CVT, but a real automatic transmission, not a turbo, not a tiny engine, looks better inside and out. It also has an emergency tire and wheel and handles great for my expectations. I took mine last fall on a 10K cross country trip (NJ-CA) from sea level to 12,300 feet, a lot of driving in the 90's-low 100's F, 80 MPH interstates and twisties in the Ozarks and it worked out very well. I agree with the flaws as to viability, small back seat and cargo area, but I would add the small fuel tank (needs to be 1.5-2 gallons more for better range), and could use a 2nd 12 volt power point in the dash or in the back seat area. I have a slight issue as to lane assist as sometimes it ignores that you are doing an avoidance maneuver and sometimes a bit hesitant in gear selection.

@andrescastillo07 the nice thing is that the driver seat height is adjustable to accommodate your preference seating high or low! @@Druze_Tito I have a CX-30 and I have the same issue. It is just very sensitive when it comes to braking, and it doesn't brake smoothly either. It'll jolt you from your seat when it brakes so hard. Someone from 100m away will be turning or changing into my lane and the car will start to brake, hard. With my Volkswagen, the ACC is a lot smoother and better, not as sensitive as the Mazda system. It also doesn't really recognise the curvature of the road so I tend not to use the ACC in the Mazda.

Mazda adding the cylinder deactivation to the base motor crossed the non-turbo CX30 off the list. If I want potential future issues with a motor, I want some power to go along with it. Then, Mazda had the gall to get rid of the base turbo model, so the only trim options for the turbo engine now hover around 35-36K MSRP...which is not nearly as nice as 31-32K... :(

I love that the main screen in the center is tilted to the driver! (the CX-5, I believe, is horizontal - in line with the dash) Also, the center dial under the steering wheel (on my 2023 CX-30 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus at least) a) a real dial, vs the Hondas and many others have that rectangular space between the speedo and the tach, and b) the under-steering wheel displays are viewable from the passenger (and I imagine back-seats) vs say a Honda HRV, which shows only the speedo to the passenger, the other Honda instruments are only seen by the driver!

You mentioned that the CX-30 is a strong argument against getting a Mazda3. In comparing Mazda models before buying a new CX-5, I found the CX-5 to be a strong argument against the CX-30. It addresses most of your major complaints about the latter: it has more passenger and cargo room, visibility is much better, and it has the refinement of independent rear suspension. True, the CX-5 is larger, but not that by that much. And it costs a bit more, but again, not by a lot. If you can afford a CX-30, it's very unlikely you can't afford a grand or two more for a CX-5. Unless you have to have a smaller car, want a little bit more performance (same drivetrains as the CX-5 but in a lighter vehicle), or are really in love with the look of the CX-30 (sleeker than the CX-5, but the black cladding to painted bodywork ratio does it no favors), it seems like the best move is to pay a little bit more and step up to the CX-5. I'm not sure if Mazda is expanding its potential customer base with the CX-30 and CX-50, or is just in the process of phasing out the excellent all-around CX-5 with more "niche" newer crossover models.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 года назад
Great comment, It’s still respectfully cheaper than the CX5 although that is a good point and it’s why I think the CX5 is their strongest offering in the lineup when competing against its own class. If someone wants a mazda but doesn’t want the bad visibility and too cramped of a back seat, the cx5 is great HOWEVER the cx30 still makes a ton of sense if you don’t mind the smaller windows and a tighter backseat (the cx5 is not great here either) doesn’t break you. Where this cx5 cannibalism gets stronger is with the cx-50 which costs more but still takes some short cuts.

Really helpful. I might buy a 2021 or 2022, as I won't have to pay the top of the line price to get a turbo. Yes, I'll lose 2 mpg, but as I drive less than 3000 miles a year, that seems like a reasonable tradeoff. Would appreciate your thoughts if you have time. I've loved my Mazda MX6 since I bought it new in 1997, but it won't pass smog check. It was made on a union line in Flat Rock, Michigan, and built on the same chassis as the ugly Ford Probe. It was my second MX6. It was SO fun to drive, and I could put my skis in the car. The CX30 is a good way to keep the small, sporty feel *and* get the safety stuff. (I'm not going to worry about rear seat airbags, since I will never have a human in the back. We'll use someone else's car if we have 4 adults.) Avoiding touchscreen controls is a giant plus. I hate having to take my eyes off the road to find radio station presets. I do wish the greenhouse was bigger, but overall I think the CX30 is my auto match made in heaven!

I'd have to decide to get a Naturally aspirated one- and ADD A SUPERCHARGER to it-- or buy the turbo..(which I am finding out are getting better and hold up well now--SAFELY- where they USE to create too much excess heat and cause many issues. )..... and I LOVE the REAL transmission-- and it's NOT how FAST you shift- ding dong- it's how WELL. A simple SUPERCHARGER added (and there is one made specifically for this engine design etc.) would add tons of BOOST- without the drawbacks of a turbo- and NOT hurt the engine.
