My Torque News story: Next-gen RAV4 fans give redesign suggestions www.torquenews.com/6626/next-gen-toyota-rav4-coming-and-fans-offer-redesign-suggestions I would be thankful if you click the story to give me credit. thanks everyone! Jeff
People aren't upset about the change from V8 to 4 cylinder because they are worried about power. They are complaining about it because a boosted 4 cylinder with electric assist won't last as long as the under stressed V8 or even the older sixes. You could buy an older Land Cruiser and pass it down to your kids.
I’m worried about longevity of the drive train. The v8 easily went to 300k+. Add a turbo and hybrid system these won’t touch the reliability that the LC badge is pretty much known for
Yep, for a First Edition our dealer wants $10K over! Hey, at 10K over they can keep it. I will go for the Lexus twin, the GX550. A Land Cruiser badge is not that important.
I like it, and would definitely be interested in buying one. However, by the time the Southern Toyota Distributors, and the dealers in my area get through with their add-ons, plus the Dealer mark-up, the MSRP will be irrelevant. So, I really don't see a new Land Cruiser in my future.
I love it, but wish it had a 4.0 V6 option worried about life of 4cyl engine but price seems right. I might buy one in a couple years after I see how they are doing.
apparently the hyrbid power in the 4-cylinder covers most of the low-end power and the turbo-engine and hybrid work together on the rest. This is so that the engine technically doesn't get too stressed. I think even Toyota themselves said that the engine had been tested for 1 million miles.
@@faheemabbas3965 that’s awesome to hear! I got a Tacoma, just paid it off, and I really don’t want another car payment but I can see me saving some $$$ and in a couple years getting one, I really want a SUV for 2nd car and this seems to be the best, would love a 4Runner with 4.0 but the used prices are insane and only way to buy a Toyota is new so you don’t have to deal with high miles and crazy prices. I think all this turbo/hybrid stuff I’d much rather trust Toyota than ford or any others, they seem to get things right and make cars that will last!
Jeff, My first concern is the placement of the spare tire. Just about every serious off road SUV you can name places the spare on the tailgate for ready access and that is not an option as it was on the last Prado. My second concern is the current absence of a 2 door model with manual transmission. For decades the mid-size (Prado) Land Cruiser offered these options.🤔
@@TheRayDog The 4Runner is the exception that proves the rule. Land Cruiser 70 Series, Wrangler, Bronco, FJ Cruiser, G-Wagon, Defender and the new Ineos all place the spare on the tailgate where it won't be caked in mud or slathered in road salt and grime. The last generation of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado also offered a tailgate mounted spare across the globe. Buyers who chose that option got upgraded fuel capacity of nearly FORTY! gallons. 🤩
I'm sure the aftermarket will have an option available pretty quickly. That'll free up space for an extra tank underneath for longer range touring. I'm sure the Australians will find a solution.
Truth, land cruisers were top of the line power train, interior, and reliability. This has a poor interior with cheap plastics, a tiny engine being forced through turbos to make up power… that won’t last. Landcruisers were generational, now they’re a 5 year car.
The only concerns I have is the dealership ADM. Why can't you guys just do MSRP (Monroney) and not add an addendum sticker. These rigs will be modified as soon as they leave the lot. Therefore, I'm out and will find a 1958 several years down the road from a private party and pay cash. That's what I did with my FJC TT, which is still my daily driver. Thanks Jeff!
My dad had the '76 and later '78 Land Cruiser, with the straight 6 and 4 speed manual in both, the only power window was the rear window. Good times. Now those were Land Cruisers.
@@Toyotajeff Yes, undoubtedly. But I like the immediate torque that a V8 can provide and I’m not gonna spend 55-65k on a vehicle that tows less then my current 16 year old SUV.
I am glad they went smaller. They were getting too large for trailing well. The smaller engine will probably not be as reliable. Hopefully it's better than the ecoboost in the Bronco!
Needed 6 cyl engine choice and 3rd row option. It’s a Prado not an 80 series but a much better change in direction from the bloated and ultra plush unobtainium 200 and 300/ LX600 LC’s. It will be nice not looking for a gas station every 225 miles.
I love the new LC. I think Toyota nailed it. The 200 series didn't exactly sell like hot cakes. Why? Too expensive. Deplorable gas mileage. Useless 3rd row. And huuuge... (although not that much bigger than this one). Honestly, like you said, this slots perfectly above the 4Runner price wise. I personally hate leather seats, so I'm thrilled about the cloth seats on the 1958 edition. I have been waiting for the new 4Runner, but seeing how close they are priced, I may wait a bit more, wait for the guaranteed dealer markups to die down and just get an LC.
Except the 200 doing so poorly in the USA *didn't make sense* in the grand scheme of things. The 200 sold like hotcakes in Australia, Asia, and especially the Middle East. Toyota in their infinite wisdom, however, did ZERO ADVERTISING for it and instead pushed the mall-crawler-only Sequoia because "more space" instead of pushing the same suv the UN deploys to warzones and natural disasters...
Better in the 4cylinder? Yes maybe for the first two years. That is a lot of stress on the 4cyl. The old land cruiser was a 300k to 400k vehicle in mileage life. Doubting this one will do the same.
i really like it and like the cloth/tweed interior. i don't want leather anyway. hopefully the turbo/hybrid engine lasts and the prices don't ridiculous.
This and the new Saquoia are Frankencars. It's hard to comprehend how a new ground-up design can have the batteries simply suck in the back rising 5+ inches above the tailgate opening. It's like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I understand that integrating the batteries into the floor will take time but I'll pass on these until they get that done.
I am not sure why Toyota is presenting this as the "Land Cruiser" in the US. Around the world in the majority of countries, it is and has always been called the Land Cruiser Prado. Also known as the 250 Series. The previous fourth-generation Land Cruiser Prado was the 150 series. The Prado version of the Land Cruiser has always been smaller, less powerful, and at a lower price than the full-size Land Cruiser, which again this is not. Another interesting fact is that in other countries, you can buy this new Land Cruiser Prado with a petrol or a diesel engine, in other words non-hybrid, and with a third row. Lastly, the 200 Series you mentioned was the full-sized Land Cruiser that was in production from 2007-2020. The current generation of the full-size Land Cruiser is the 300 Series and has been in production since 2021-present. From a price perspective, a full-size Land Cruiser that is fully equipped with a turbo engine will cost the same or more than a Toyota Sequoia Capstone.
I think it looks amazing. The only SUV I think looks better is the new 70 series. If dealer mark ups aren’t criminal (below 10k) then I’ll buy. I don’t hate the 4banger but I am concerned about longevity of a high output 4 cylinder. Chevy went the extra mile and integrated diesel tech into their new 4banger for durability but Toyota hasn’t mentioned any details on their new engine. Time will tell.
Just on principle, I won’t pay a dealer markup. Looks great, but I’ll wait until the market softens. But I know people that want that capability now, and if they’re willing to pay markups, power to them.
@@vincebadagnani181 in my experience, all new vehicles are marked up. Buying new is never a pleasant experience but I hate it less than buying used…. Unless it’s a vintage vehicle that I plan on restoring.
Watch these because you are fun (and informative) and fit nicely in the trunk🤣. PS if this has the same easy scratch soft interior plastics as my ‘21 Rav that’s horrific for the $$$.
The fundamental data used in this video needs to be corrected. LC250 is not the "new LC200"!!! LC200 is now LC300. The old LC150 is the new LC250. In the Middle East and Australia, we have two Land Cruisers, the large full version and the small brother. The LC300 is large and comes with a 3.5 V6 Twin Turbo and 409HP or a trusty V6 4.0l naturally aspirated. The LC250, or Prado as it is known in some markets, comes with a 2.4l Turbo petrol 267 HP. In some markets, you have a diesel and hybrid version available.
Jeff, On the positive side, the price came way down and the styling is terrific especially the two tone paint. It is thrilling to see Toyota finally got the memo on providing ample leg and headroom. 👏👏👏👏
Don't really think price really came down, because this is basically what the next gen 4runner would have been. GX has always shared the same platform as the 4runner so not a true Land Cruiser like the last gen that was discontinued in 2021. 2024 GX = 2024 4Runner/LC in true terms
@@gotcoke795 That's funny, people around the world who drive a Land Cruiser 70 Series consider it to be the 'true' Land Cruiser. They think of the Prado or 200/300 Series as overweight, over complicated station wagons*. The fact is, the 200 Series sold in appallingly low numbers because Toyota inexplicably priced in on par with the Lexus LX. This more affordable Land Cruiser will sell as fast as Toyota can build them.😁😁
Not getting the 2.8L diesel engine option. Also what is the price to replace those electric batteries? How long are they warrantied for? Past land cruisers are running strong 20 years later. In 10 years are 2024 Land Cruiser owners gonna be sticker shocked when the dealership say it’s gonna cost $15000 to replace the batteries for that 48ph electric motor? Those are two things I don’t like about it. Plus if the batteries are located in the floor under the cargo mat. If I or anyone wanted to put a Truck Vault or Cargo guide back their doesn’t look like a option.
I wouldnt hold your breath on that mpg comment. The lexus gx came out with similar set up and the mpg only went down a whopping ONE mpg from the previous model.
That was for the TTV6 which I believe isn't a hybrid. The GX550 has been confirmed by Lexus to get the new Land Cruiser's hybrid turbo 4-cylinder engine sometime next year, most likely late 2024. It will not be available at the GX550's initial launch.

Yeah I asked about Turbo lag on TRD Jon page. I get that the electric motor increases torque. But when and where? If you’re fully loaded and driving to say Heber City UT in the middle of July. Or in Arizona in July at S.L. With Hi temp. Are you gonna have serious turbo lag doing a simple drive up the hill To flagstaff or Prescott? I had a 2004 Audi 1.8T twin turbo the lag was horrible in summer months trying to get up to speed. I ended up installing a cold air intake to aid in performance. But I’m not a fan of any 4cyl twin turbo. Most of the RU-vid poster talking about not caring don’t understand that 200 series LC are going strong and were built before most of them were born. These cars will go 300K if maintained properly.
Cloth seats don’t get scalding hot so you sweat constantly and they don’t get freezing cold so your bum goes numb. They also tend to hold up better than pleather. I think cloth seats are the best option because they’re breathable. I’m in the market for the new Sienna and if I could have those vintage Toyota cloth seats in there I’d be a happy man!
This video didn't address the #1 reason a lot of people won't buy one - the fact that a ton of driver-assist crap and the hybrid engine are STANDARD. Why would I want to go offroading or drive on the beach in this thing when I could just pick up a 4-runner or a Jeep and accomplish the same thing without a bunch of electronic points of failure? How is this going to hold up vs the elements when you make all of this extra tech stuff mandatory and it creates a slew of potential issues? If it was a manual transmission with optional tech package I'd be interested (especially at the price). But with no escape from a hybrid engine and robodriving crap add-ons, this is basically a hipster Highlander. No thanks.
Its interesting as an Australian hearing the LC Prado (LC250 in the US) being compared to the LC200. Over here we have the Land Cruiser Prados which are like the little brothers of the Land Cruiser 200s and 300s, and this is the new Prado... So for us it makes total sense that it isnt as big and is a 4cyl, but i can totally see why many US buyers would be very confused lol.
Got a little excited when I heard about the new model but after this I realize it's not for me. Not a fan of the interior. Plus I'm guessing they will sell for $75k after markup.
I don't hate the car but it's not for me I want reliability and mechanical reliability as well and that's what the 4Runner brings I don't think the new 4Runners going to be that good be honest with you that's why I'm currently looking for a 5th gen I currently only fourth-gen love it
The Land Cruiser PRADO now has joined the class of rugged cars like the LC FJ and LC 70 series. We used to enjoy the TREAMLINED PRADO as a SUV State Car just second to LC 200 and LC 300. We hope the streamlined FORTUNA won't be rugged.
I went from highly interested to highly UNinterested when I found out you have to pay a RECURRING Subscription Charge for some of the features to continue to work even though you already paid for it when you bought the SUV
Thank you for this review... I only liked the box shape... What is the difference between the new landcruiser and prado? Almost the same... No v8... No 3rd row... Too much plastic for 1958 edition... Clothes seats... Smaller size than previous model...
I can't see myself hating it for any of those reasons. I've been waiting for a reasonably priced SUV that isn't compromised by a 3rd row I would NEVER need (also that isn't a squinty-face Lexus or Land Rover Defender) that has decent offroad ability, will let me toss golf clubs in the back, take mountain bikes out and generally be something I can keep for a long time. I only do 5k miles a year now so this could be another 15 year vehicle for me.
I’m all for preference and criticism, but what gets me is the number of people commenting with completely irrational hot takes. “It has a tiny 4 cylinder…!” That makes more torque than the V8 “I don’t care because 4 cylinder!!!!” The LC is freaking awesome. Way to go, Toyota!
Couldn’t disagree w/ you more Jack! Half the cylinders and half the KDSS system, doesn’t compute to better. As John Vernon (Fletcher) said in ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales, “don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s rainin’”!😂 I’ll stick w/ the global standard and UN vehicle of choice, my ‘16 LC.
@@bobbyb.1743 And there is tech on your 2016 LC that people in the 90s would have scoffed at. And people in the 70s would have rolled their eyes at the tech in the 90s. While we can always expect teething problems with updated tech, betting against the march of technology pretty much never yields positive results. But considering you quoted "The Outlaw Josey Wales," I'll assume you have your bad humors treated with leeches and healthy dose of Dr. Mayberry's all natural tonic for skin and bones...
@@jax1079innovation is good but let's not act like all tec is good or is better for us. There a reason why many companies are putting buttons back in cars. These new engines are solely for emission restrictions and that doesn't necessarily make them better cause in large vehicles like these they hardly make any real difference
Literally the best chicken noodle soup: This recipe is full of chicken, sliced carrots, celery, and tender wide noodles. It’s a classic homemade soup seasoned and cooked to perfection. Perfect for warming up during the winter or comforting loved ones who aren’t feeling well.
Ideally it should have come with a 1GR-FE engine or a 2GR-FE engine, at least one trim with this engine option. One trim in manual transmission option maybe reinstate the 3rd row seat on those trim models.
Let's be clear...the Land Cruiser is a vehicle that was NEVER supposed to have a third row. Ever. Some troop carrier configs sort of made sense for the Japanese military back in the day, but that is a whole different configuration. For civilian POV use, this is not primarily a soccer mom tike carrier or similar concrete jungle taxi of whatever sort. It CAN be used for that, but that isn't the focus. That back end is meant for the utility of other gear...and that's assuming you do not take out the second row for the same. 2 rows makes sense. 3 did NOT belong. There are other vehicles for people who need 3 rows.
You can’t compare the motor of a Prado to a 300 series- Also, there are EPA regs that auto manufacturers need to meet- and don’t forget about the 37 gigatons(billion tons) of carbon that we humans are emitting into the air every year.
I will keep my 2020 LC, 28K miles on it....will also hold on to my 2022 4Runner TRD ORP, 15K miles. for a long time...but I will have to say the 1958 model is a lot of throw back to the first LC I ever looked at closely, a beautiful tan 1982 LC, that one vehicle stuck in my head
My only complaint is honestly the hybrid system. I just feel like the washboard roads will destroy internals cells of the batteries. Like I hope I am wrong but that amount of shaking and voibrating makes me nervous.
If the 6th gen 4runner TRD off road with iforce is more expensive than a landcruiser 1958 then I might just buy that instead... when my 5th gen is due for replacement
I'm ok with cloth as long as they are easy to clean and don't show dirt, being an off road vehicle. Also would like rubber flooring instead of carpet. I have 2 kids and 2 very large long haired dogs. I would like something like this so my dogs can have a/c in the summer. Right now I have a bare bones 2019 tacoma with a soft topper and rubber bed mat for the dogs, but it does get hot for them. Having carpet and cloth seats, it really does attract the dog hair, even if they aren't in the cab. As far as the other complaints, it's really a non issue for me. It may not be for everyone, but I think for the segment it is going after, especially the price point, it's should sell really well. As long as dealers don't get greedy.
I love it and I want one! Brilliant design, more efficient and great dimensions for off roading. This BS about an 8cyl is by people who still live in the 90ties. This the way to go. The old one was great but it was like an old Russian tank
Toyota doesn't know how to do proper 3rd row seats. Therefore, it's a good thing that they left it out on this one. Plus, people rarely use those things anyway which just adds weight and eats up cargo space.
My excitement ENDED with the motor !!! Not a fan of the techy interior at all. Was excited to see Japanese QUALITY again, so I guess the 2024 4Runner will be my last model Toyota. I'm good with that!!!
Personally I love the new Land cruiser. I really like the linear performance of the hybrid with better fuel economy. Who wouldn't want 65 foot pounds more and better fuel economy? Really think about that? I like the size the size I think is perfect I think they brought it back to where it should be I think it's going to be much more trail-worthy at this size then the previous. I really do like the 1958 from the standpoint of personalizing it to your taste. Put my own tires and wheels and everything on it set it up exactly the way I want it for the same price as the higher price Land cruiser. I will have to see the cloth seats in person I had a 4Runner years ago that was cloth interior And it was great It was a really durable interior. As for the tow rating my personal opinion is if you need more than 6,000 lb towing you should be buying a full size truck not a medium size SUV. So in my opinion Toyota hit a home run. Now I'm trying to convince my wife that she needs a Land cruiser because I'm not giving up my Tacoma . But I would love to have both. Thank you 👍
haha, good luck! I hope she loves modern retro style stuff. I also fell in love with this new Land Cruiser, and I’m a big fan of cloth seats and looking forward to check them as well
If you’re worried about fuel economy get a Sienna or Highlander. These are SUVs, heavy for many reasons. “We want MPG, let’s boost a smaller motor.” If it’s by turbo, a 4 liter diesel. If it’s petrol, 4 liter hybrid (plug in of course). I’d rather have 4 electric motors running my 6-7 thousand pound truck than an over boosted 2 liter 4 cylinder. My work vehicle went from a V8 to a turbo 6, petrol. I fuel up 2x as much now. Paper vs practical
LOVE the new design...HATE the Hybrid engine config - this rig will not get passed onto the next generation because the hybrid system won't live long enough to crack 225K...Hey Toyota, we need a in-line 6 turbo diesel and a V8 option. You will rule the world with these power options.
The reason this doesn’t have a v8 is because this is a Land Cruiser PRADO. Prado’s never had v8. At best, they had v6. Big daddy Land cruisers, yes v8’s. Prado’s - No. I don’t understand what the confusion is. They are completely different models…
This video is obviously clickbait. I will only buy a vehicle with cloth seats, no sun roof, level beltline, level roofline, boxy upright ans spacious cabin, upright A, B and C pillars, with clear visibility, generous cargo area and good ground clearance. This vehicle has all those features I love and will pay for. My main concern is the NMH battery longevity, maintenance and replacement cost.
Well, this is a Prado, a different vehicle to the LC200 that was sold in the USA. Comparing this to the previous LandCruiser is like comparing the newest Explorer to the previous model Expedition, they are just different vehicles, different sizes and built to different specs. In other countries where the Prado is sold alongside the 300, the already pricey Prado far outsells the 300 which is just so much more expensive ....
While I love Land Cruisers and have had 4 over the years plus other Toyota products like the FJ Cruiser, I always felt Toyota kept pushing it too much upmarket. I was happy to hear the new approach to this new Cruiser. I love the look but after a few months now to really chew it over…. It comes down to this for me….. the 4Runner is Prado with a different body like the GX, the new US market Land Cruiser is a Prado. Why would I want to go with a considerably more expensive version of the Prado, obviously it’s a new version of the platform, but it has a new, unproven drivetrain that will require more cost to maintain by the 150,000 mark, not including the likely battery replacement around 12-15 years…. Or have the refined and perfected 4.0 V6 and proven drivetrain if the 5th gen which can give me a 3rd row? The 4Runner 3rd row is perfectly fine for kids and as a family of 5 while I was initially thinking about the new cruiser, we decided to go with the 5th gen 4Runner. Not as fancy or cutting edge, won’t be nearly as sexy or trendy as the new Cruiser but as a vehicle I want to use for 20 years, it’s the only choice. I am struggling to see how they are going to reposition the next 4Runner. But since they are both Prado’s I just see it as the better buy and I expect it will go anywhere the new cruiser will. 🤷
How come you're not talking about the fact that Toyota is having major problems with engines turbocharged versions tundra in particular. That's the video you should make so people are aware of it so they don't fall into a trap In my opinion it's complete ridiculousness that Toyota could not put an engine together with quality anymore. Tundras are not selling there's too many of them they're overpriced and in my opinion people don't want them because they're not reliable.
