When reading Lathe I had to check when it was written a few times due to the themes presented - 1971. See Dispossessed for LeGuin's ideas on anarchy. For me, her ideas are much more engaging than her stories.

The first book I read by Vonnegut was Galapagos. After that gem, I was hooked. The Sirens of Titan is my favorite. When the Library of America offered his novels. as a set (at a big discount) I just HAD to buy them. I'll never be sorry. I also really was impressed The Lathe of Heaven, but prefer The Left Hand of Darkness (I cried at the end).

Really interesting books and commentary. I have read 4 of the selections, but a long time ago! For some more relatively complex and mind-blowing SF, you may like "Lord Of Light" - Zelazny. Or really mind-blowing, but concerningly credible (the early parts of the novel), "A Plague of Demons" - Keith Laumer.

If you like Flowers for Algernon, you should try Camp Concentration by Thomas M. Disch, which has a similar plot but with a much higher level of intelligence and a fantastic twist ending. Glad Vonnegut was chosen too!
@keithdixon6595
@keithdixon6595 3 месяца назад
Having watched all the video now (!) I don't think Vonnegut is saying we're all trapped in our fate, but he's pointing out the smallness of humankind in the great scheme of things. So the introduction of aliens here is to broaden our horizons to encompass the universe, not just to consider our tiny Earth as all there is.
@WordsinTime

I’ve heard good things about Disch, so I’m looking forward to trying his books!

I just finished Watts' Firefall duo this afternoon. Started Blindsight on Monday, finished Echopraxia on Thursday. My mind is clamouring around out there somewhere and the last thing I want to do is head straight into another book that will "make me think." A bit of Terry Pratchett is probably on the menu before I add something from this video. 😀

The Lathe of Heaven and More Than Human are both great choices for thought provoking SF. 👍 But, my god, stay away from Artemis!!! 😂 And truth it’s been 5-6 years since I read it and I guess I remember a couple of interesting moments from the book, but overall it was a huge disappointment for me.
@WordsinTime
@WordsinTime 3 месяца назад
Haha almost everyone dislikes Artemis, which is surprising because his other two books are so good!
@bartsbookspace
@bartsbookspace 3 месяца назад
@@WordsinTime Yes, I love both Project and Martian, but Artemis lacks the heart that makes the other two books so pleasurable. And I think it was the high expectations I had going into the read that ultimately made it disappointing. If it was just a book written by an author I haven't read, I would have likely thought, "It was fine".

Sorry to be late to the party (again). The thought struck me that all of these books, great choices by the way, were written in very simple prose. You shouldn't let the style get in the way of the literature of ideas. The lack of modern books of this standard is a symptom of the modern publishing malaise. Someone should write a story about it.
@WordsinTime
@WordsinTime 3 месяца назад
Interesting observation! I think modern readers enjoy character driven stories, but there are still ideas driven books out there.

I did not like the ending of Children of Men. Too much of a rainbow after the storm kinda thing. I think it would have been more fitting if the endings were swapped, if you can understand my meaning without giving away spoilers.
