For sake of clarity, it was mentioned that there are 6 mistakes. I tried to capture them to share with others in the comments area. Let me know if I was incorrect. After all, being over 50, my brain ain't working like it used to, lol. 6-Mistakes New Screenwriters Make 1. Passive Protagonist/Lead Character 2. No/Very little Conflict 3. No risk-taking in writing 4. Take/Give constructive criticism 5. Take rejection/Move on 6. Be sensitive to other writers

So glad I watched this one. I'm working on my very first screenplay following the save the cat format and it's not totally fitting in 100%, but I'm glad to hear that purposeful/creative veering off is expected and makes the piece spicy!

My biggest pet peeve today with storytelling, is the prevalence of passive aggressiveness and bickering between characters to create conflict. It is murder on the ears. It's easy to avoid in your writing (I do) once you're aware of it. And this feels like a modern phenomenon, never irked me as much as it does now, perhaps it was done with more nuisance/style/heart 10-20 years ago.

Yes, not pushing conflict enough is one I have to work on. As you guys said, if you're a nice person, you don't like conflict in real life, and you don't want your characters to have too hard a time. But, unless they're having a hard time, they're boring! So, I'm working on it...

Raven, you can do it, if you just "believe in yourself". You can still be a wonderful, caring person, but characters without faults or obstacles do not work in stories. Often times writers doubt themselves, and get in their own way. Every character you write, is a part of you. You can still write evil characters, just give them a motivation that makes them "relatable". Hang in there.

It doesn't have to be conflict as in a fight or argument. For example, in a relationship and one wants kids the other doesn't. That's a conflict of worldviews and desires. Doesn't have to be a screaming match though.

Absolutely writing a passive protagonist in my current script. It's a bad habit I have when threading together the plot, but it's relatively easy to fix on revisions. I also suck at creating compelling conflict, but that is definitely a skill that you have to build on. And I so know I wouldn't last a week as a staff writer. In my perspective, pitching ideas in a competitive environment is a nightmare, albeit a great way to create top content.

So I just submitted a script for a pilot to multiple competitions. The feedback I got from two of them were diametric opposites of each other. It is one of the most confusing experiences I have ever had in my life and the amount of self-doubt I am struggling with now is almost suffocating.

I've learned, just from listening to various people in the business, that there are set concrete rules to follow to break in and stay successful... but at the same time it's also required you break those rules lol! One person says make sure you follow the beats... another says screw the beats and write uniquely and stand out... another says you dont want to stand out too much but rather, write what (structure and story) folk are used to seeing so they know youre not a rookie lol I say if youre a true artist, get the basic structure down but dont silence your unique voice.

Dimario I think there is really only one rule at the end of the day, and that is don't be boring and even that is a difficult dictum because different people find different things boring, and different things entertaining. I think if you can give people something they have never seen before it might be a good start, or maybe if you can give them things they have seen before, but from a really radical perspective that might work, but easier said than done on both counts. Like you I've seen so many formulas and differing bits of advice. What entertains and excites you? You can't find that answer in any book. That is something only you can unlock for yourself. So I guess you should try to find a journey that charges you--makes you feel electric, and not just focus on how to solve various problems well or else you might make the perfectly executed story, like he mentioned above, that is just blah.

His point about being "safe"...he's right. This is why I reject principles like "Save The Cat". It's meant to be a guideline, not a dogma. I've read some scripts that would otherwise have been great BUT they are too on point and too rigid. You can feel it as you read on. You know that by this point this will happen, and by this page that will happen, and it does. Too formulaic. Too rigid. It chokes out the creativity of it all. It lacks an organic feel. It has no flow. Or maybe, it has a flow but not like a river...more like a tap. On and off. No alternate routes. No deviation. No new paths. Just on or off and one directional. Try to keep some beats, and use things like "Save The Cat" as a GUIDE...but don't allow yourself to become dogmatic about it. If your writing is too starchy, it'll be picked up easy by the reader and unlikely to ever see a viewer on a screen. It has to breathe.

While I've never been a pitching situation with a executive producer, it sounds like the producer needs to grow a bit of a backbone if all they want to say is no and move on without a complete rationale for saying no. It sounds like the one writer was fired because the producer wasn't clear on his rationale for saying no.

"Are you guilty of any of these mistakes? Be honest." Not enough conflict? Au contraire! Some writers think I'm doing crazy and risky stuff (mainly adult-oriented, not porn, just mature). I don't mind, my readers liked it. (I work in the comics industry, not in the film media.). I'm guilty of "Take rejection/Move on". Sometimes, I think I should try more. If a publisher says "no", I get it and get out XD

1) "you can say anything in the script. Do it!" 2) "if you say 50 is elderly and the person reading your script is 50, why create trouble?" Contradictory. Plus: it seems that you can say anything about anyone but the people in the Hollywood industries...

I was thinking the same thing! I'm new to this whole thing and so I thought it was all about creating your own world. If I think in my world 50 is old because my character is 15 then its old! At 15 anything past 25 was damn near death to me lol.

What if her pitch was good? She got fired for something so small? Plus ppl watching tv would have noticed if it works or not, THIS tells you, your boss is boss- do want they say, even if they are wrong. Just YES men, this is why exec stab each other in the back etc
