Man I'm so glad I was recommended your channel. I been trying to ease my way back into reading again after a long break but I wanted something more from it and your channel definitely has that.
I recommend another long short story that follows the same line as these, short and meaningful, which discusses the meaning of science in 19th century society: The Alienist, by Machado de Assis #### [in english: The Collected Stories of Machado de Assis]
Very good and thoughtful recommendations. Although these books are short but they will leave you pondering over many things for days atleast this is what happened in my case when I read The death of Ivan Illych, The Stranger and The Judgement. My short book recommendations The nose by Nikolai Gogol, The little prince , Siddhartha by Hesse, Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore, I have more souls than one by Pessoa, A room of One's own, Letters to a young poet by Rilke, On the shortness of life by Seneca.
❤ Thank you for another well thought out discussion and insightful recommendations. I started watching your channel from your first upload which was about the same time I started making reading a central part of my life which had not been for many years after my uni days even though I have always enjoyed it. You have inspired my resumed journey and given me many ideas to ponder upon. I have been curious however to get your "story" on coming to reading. Has it been a lifelong passion, inspired by a particular person or persons, or somethng entirely different? A diverson video on your journey would appeal to all of us I think. Anyways, much indebtedness for your passion and sincerity and dare I say humility of presentation of self! 😊
Grateful for this comment and to kickstart any return to reading. It wasn’t always a part, let alone the center, of my life so I’ll keep a video around that idea in my mind!
I have read all but one of these. I think you did a good job of introducing them. One thing, you say that Mersault shoots the Arab on the beach for no rhyme or reason (I believe that was the phrase you used) but as I recall the story there was more to the encounter than that, I mean Mersault at least thought that he had seen a knife flash in the Arab's hand...I can't recall if Camus presented the knife as a fact or as a fact for Mersault. Also, Mersault was ill from overexposure to the sun at the moment of the encounter and so...all was not well with him. It was an ugly incident all around to be sure...Anyway, a minor thing and you did a good job with your presentation.
You are right! There was a knife or perception of a knife I believe like you said, but I think Mersault originally followed him unnecessarily and instigated the interaction. I guess that’s what I was alluding to by saying there was no reason
@@TheActiveMind1 a minor matter. (For what it 's worth, I confess, I don't think anyone as morally desolate as Mersault should have been out and about with a gun in his pocket in the first place.)
