Reading these comments is pretty cool. Knowing him as just my dad I never really paid any attention to his craft. Now that I'm 51 years old now it's weird now that things were going on right before my eyes. So now when I go to his house I take pictures of all his albums And all his plaques on the wall.... A lot of late-nights at his gigs and recording studios that I didn't understand at that time. Lol THANKS FANS
I turn 51 in July as well Travis, and have been playing your dad's music for 30 years for myself and occasionally the odd couple of tunes live, giving full credit to where it comes from. There have been times in my life when it was hard to lift my head but as soon as I play some of Mr. Nocentelli's Meters riffs, it takes me to a better place. It's been awhile since I have been to Tippitina's in New Orleans as I play music mostly in Canada but I have great memories. Take care.
i made the mistake to watch other tutorials , now im coming back and its good to know that this are the coolest and learnable licks, and the smartest teacher on youtube ;-) i will stay here, i swear :-)
Nice one. I got a Nocentelli lesson in GT mag in about 2003 ... I still bring that out and play it. I have also ruthlessly applied those licks to my own improvised vamps. The lesson was by a guy called Jason Sidwell (I think) who did other great funk lessons based on Curtis Mayfield, Bruno Nettencourt, Johnny Guitar Watson etc. Great gear.
Thanks, I really enjoy your lessons! I'm still in high school and part of the local jazz band. The drummer and I love to groove during percussion practice. Its great fun and you wouldn't believe some of the reactions I've got by splicing some of your licks in. Amazing stuff demonstrated by an amazing player!!!
Wow man you are way ahead of the game if you are finding this stuff at your age, I didn't learn alot this stuff till I was in my 30's lol well done, steal all the stuff on my channel!
Patrick Foster - Yes to that, Mr. Foster - The Meters are way cool for a way long time! And this lesson is proof of how badass funk & groove guitar really is.
Leo, Was A Great Influence In My Life. I Had Once A Week To Get My Leasons from Him, Antonano York, & Other Great Influencers .....& I Used That Time.....
Hey Rick, thanks for doing some Meters licks! Leo Nocentelli is absolutely one of my favorites! A seriously underappreciated player. Why aren't The Meters in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
Cuz they would make em look like amateurs. Paul McCartney had them play his private birthday party.High praise.Live on the Queen Mary is incredible. Great lesson, all those nuances you were just nailing. They should be in there just for Right Place Wrong Time by Dr. John. They were the band on that. I love the look on people's faces when they hear the Meters for the first time.🤩 You really threw me a nugget on this lesson. Thanks. Play on Funkateers.
thanks again.....if you read ...the standard notation is GREAT practice. Rilck, you even add the start times for each lick. I cannot say enough..going for skype set up soon cannot wait!
Love love love these videos Rick. You're my "get out of my comfort zone " guy hahaha... I'm pretty well versed in I guess more basic hard Rock, acoustic, classical even, I'm not selling myself short, but you play amazing funk, jazz , blues, I learn so much from your clips. I discovered you maybe 6 months ago, enjoy each new video and love diving into the old ones too. I am having my morning coffee and just playing that first lick over and over in every key with a huge smile on my face . Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦👍.
Thank you for this. I always thought the staccato double stops were the b & e strings on the same fret. That's how I always tried to play Cissy strut. The Meters are the absolute best! Real deal greasy funk.
These licks cut down to my soul! Can you say a little bit about how you mute strings? I'm working on lick #2, I keep hitting the D string in the first part, then the A and high E in the 2nd.
first off you shouldnt be going anywhere near the D string on the first part, have a narrower strum and aim for the B string, you may hit the G string but that should be muted bu your middle finger. The second half, mute the A string with the tip of the middle finger that is on the D string and mute the high E with the bottom of the ring finger thats on the B string.
Your channel is great man. Really killer lessons. The tone you got going on this one in particular is reallly spot on. What's the secret to the edge of breakup tone?
Cant remember exactly what I used on this one. It was through the Suhr Bella and I think I just really pushed the amp to the edge of breakup. Also an ep booster in front and flint reverb, that's it.
Dear Rick, thank you for your great lesson again! I am very impressed by your spot on funcky technic (is that how you write it?? :-) Can I find a lesson from you where you tell about your right hand picking? Thanks in advance! Huub
Great video, thank you!! I was also just thinking how great your Ibanez sounded and then noticed your ESPs in the background! I collect ESP guitars myself :D
Very cool video Rick...as usual. A Boogaloo Joe Jones video someday would be super cool too! Hey y'all, you should really check out the Tasty Guitar website if you like this stuff like I do.I bought the 50 Filthy funk licks ebook...love it. Tons of groovy licks for a measly ten bucks!
And the upper neighbor Eb7 is beautiful against the A bass note spelling A7; in fact, for the bass player, worth considering anywhere the comp-er goes up a half step.
for the humbuckers, just dailed it up to slight break up, rolled the low end off the amp but still need plenty of mids and nice top end but not too bright, most of this was on middle pickup setting I think
Sweet! This is realllly nitpicking here as this video is awesome, but here's a strange curiosity I noticed recently after years of playing Look-ka Py Py that might interest you: The low F in the riff (on the 4th 16th note of bar 2) is an F# on the original record! Weird huh? Great channel!
Hey Rick, lick 3 - I'm reading 2 more strokes in the tab at the end of the Eb part of the lick but you're only stroking once. Am I reading it wrong? Hope you're well. I just got back from Mexico and Dallas. Was on holiday plus visited friends. Back to shows now (production).🙂
Keeping the motion helps to keep you in time. If you don't have timing issues and can playing it perfectly in time without the motion then that is cool too.
