Flipping through the algorithms with the mix set to just X.. *cough*

Fair point Moo haha. I think in this video I just realised it after I recorded it but yes, makes more send to flip through algorithms and also change the mix to hear differences. ;)

Hey! Thanks so much for all the work you are doing with the Digitone. I am interested in exploring FM sounds. I'm looking for good advice. Should I buy a model Cycles first to learn the workflow? Or jump right into the Digitone?
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 9 месяцев назад
Thank you EBoot! Hmm that’s hard to say as I never used the Cycles but I heard it’s more entry level friendly. However, and that’s of course just my personal experience, I found it from the start away very easy to get going with the Digitone. The device just “clicked” with me and sound design was great fun as I did a lot of reverse engineering of some of the factory sounds. It’s just a very fun machine once you get the workflow

Even if I have to cool my digitone down from all the patching, thank you very much for your tutorial :) For warm pads or analog sounding basses, I usually use algo 7 or 8. But algo 2 also makes totally sense, of course. I think by chance I have managed to create warm sounds with every algo ;)
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 года назад
Hey man, you are very welcome - thanks for the nice feedback! Yeah I've heard from some people that they're using especially algo 7 for some warmer sounds, need to check that out for myself too. And yeah, you can find some warmer sweetspots in all the algos I think - the Digitone is great with all these sweetspots. :)

Really cool.. Though I'd argue the tone is generally a warm sounding synth and as such rather underrated at times by the analog is best crew :) It's amongst my favourite synths
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 4 месяца назад
That’s true, the Digitone is more on the warmer side for a digital synth. Still can sound a little harsh from time to time but it’s also one of my favourite synths!
@LordoftheBadgers
@LordoftheBadgers 4 месяца назад
@@MilesKvndra oh absolutely. But compare to other fm synth and it's clearly warmer sounding at a general level. I think it can sound really atmospheric even with a simple cymbal sound!
@hakonsoreide
@hakonsoreide 2 года назад
I always thought it was a very analogue, organic and warm sounding synth, even more so than some analogue synths I've heard, but it always helps knowing how and why it sounds analogue if you start getting more typical FM sounds out of it.
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 года назад
Hey Hakon, that's true. Like already said in the FB group, for an FM synth it definitely is more on the warmer side of things. But it can also sound very harsh, cold or metallic with certain settings. :)

Hi Miles, great video as always. I recently started exploring the unison voicing options on the Digitone, I think it can really give the sound some thickness and with -sacrificing some voices of course-, so maybe this is why it's not talked about as much seeing as most videos look at the Digitone as a standalone groovebox? Same goes for the layering, I mean you could technically create an 8 oscillator synth using algorithm 2 and layering all tracks. Just some random thought. Keep up the great work.
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 года назад
Hey Carlos, thanks a bunch for the feedback and the good thoughts! You're totally right, the DN's unison menu is great to thicken up the sounds and give them some extra punch. For sounddesign this is great but I mainly "avoid" unison exactly for the reason you said, because I most of the time need all voices for the tracks itself to avoid voice stealing when I use the DT+DN combo or the DN standalone. But the layering technique with the 8 oscillators is a very nice idea, I'll try that just for some sounddesign fun. :)
@adampeters9684
@adampeters9684 2 года назад
I primarily use Digitone in post-production when mixing for clients, and the voice allocation page is one of the many secret sauces of this machine, esp. when you’re only using one track at a time.
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 года назад
@@adampeters9684 hey Adam, that's really interesting! I've also used the DN with Ableton in the past and then you have of course way more options because you don't need to pay too close attention to the voice limitations.
@xivivix7195
@xivivix7195 2 года назад
That page is also good for pattern changes. Copy a pattern and re-adjust the voices to get a different sound using the same pattern. Good for when you want to put emphasis on a different track than you were before.

Cool tips! Hadn't really thought of algorithm 2 as a 2 osc synth, that's actually really cool. As a side note / musing, it's interesting that your point of reference for 'analog' is 'warm'. i mostly think of analog sounds as having much more rawness and 'inyourfaceness' as opposed to muffled/warm. Also, I associate analog with gear that can get pretty crazy when you push it to it's limits. In that regard FM kind of feels like that too, though the Digitone is a lot more polite in than a DX7, for instance. Though DN is on the whole a much more versatile machine.
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 года назад
Hey Erwin, yeah I'm thinking you having a fair point here. Although to me I always connect analog sounds with "warmth" it's not necessarily true (especially looking at some modular oscillators etc which I also totally put on the raw side). When I think of analog synths I immediately think of Moogs, I don't know why. 😁 But yeah, the Digitone is super versatile and you can get so many different sounds out of it!
@erwintuijl6342
@erwintuijl6342 2 года назад
@@MilesKvndra Yeah it all comes down to your frame of reference I think. My first 'proper' synth was an ms20 (bought it just before the mini hit the market), and that has been my benchmark for analog ever since. On that note, I think Digitone pairs really well with a powerful analog monosynth, it really sits well with other instruments.
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 года назад
@@erwintuijl6342 hey Erwin, thanks a bunch for that hint and I totally agree on that - that's why I'm currently having an eye on the Moog Mother 32 as I think it could be a great addition to the DN+DT combo. :)

Thank you, Miles. The tips I knew about increased confidence and the info new to me (dialing a warmth sweet spot thru low osc A B values & low LFO x-y crossfading) really help. I like how you map all these capabilities to an aesthetically graspable concept (analog sounding-ness), that’s the sound design wisdom connecting the stars, so to speak, helping us identifying them for later when we connect our them in our own intuitive ways!

Hey Cenzo, thank you so much for this awesome feedback! I'm super glad that you could find some new tips in this that helped with sounddesign on the DN. Thanks for so much helpful information - I’m always wondering about the multiplier on the lfo - have you explained this in one of your videos? I would like to know a bit about how you use this and the effect it has thanks!
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 года назад
Hey Peacefulpigeon, you're welcome! The multiplier basically multiplies the speed of the LFO. This gives you the opportunity to use some super fast LFO rates that can create some really nice sounding results. I'm using it more on slower rates but sometimes it can be fun to experiment with that. :) Haven't done a video on that yet but maybe it's something for a future sounddesign video.
