It can't be stressed enough how much more you can learn with a basic Patreon sub to Bernth. I strongly, STRONGLY recommend doing it if you have serious dreams of shredding your guitar like a madman, or even just to be better at your instrument. Bernth for sure has gotten me closer than i ever was in my 30 years of playing guitar. It Is Worth IT!!

There is one thing that I would like to add to this list, that gave me an instant boost in stamina, speed and clearness. Its pressing the strings with the minimal efford you need to produce a tone. This way, you can play much lighter and faster and it feels great
@alprobert
@alprobert 7 месяцев назад
Totally agree. Coupled with a nice flat neck and some new light strings...it actually makes you feel a lot better than you are, which boosts confidence, which then, in turn can make you improve faster.

Whahaha I love this video. I never took lessons but played for 23+ years. I taught myself and I know I'm not greatest but I think I've done pretty well. Anyways, my pinky is uncooperative, I like I broke it when I was younger or something. I tried and tried for 15 of my playing years trying to get my pinky to do this. It cannot bend independent from my ring finger. This is a MAJOR issue for the more advanced techniques. Until that point I was fine, but legato always felt out of reach and I was SO close to just accepting it as a fact and giving up on that technique. Then...I saw some footage of EVH doing some legato in the way you show hear BUT he did a flourish at the end that caught my attention. I watched and rewatched over and over and I had no idea how he was doing. Then about a year later I see Satriani do it and he went further and I was able to understand how he did it. I took that Flourish they were doing as a small part of their legato and I crafted an entire technique from it. It doesn't involve a pinky. , instead of a pinky, I substitute precise rapid slides in and out to get the extra notes normally hit with a finger. It took years to get it to the level to where it was a viable technique. Now I can do it all day without even thinking. Now.....I will admit it's flawed, it has limited max speed due to only being able to slide in and out so fast before it starts to go off the rails. Now I mentioned EVH and Satriani were the initial inspiration but they used it as a flourish that sounded cool among their correct execution legato. Most players have no idea how I'm even doing it because it looks pretty damn odd. I gurantee my explanation made very little sense. You need to see it to understand. Heres a vid where I do it several times throughout. m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02u4DjvRTet4Dc9NzwdPA3DGQJmLdbkxWwR7hMcd9AtZuE8sFCqhE1u7fP1FZvF9LXl&id=100000045655869

I've noticed that your wrist is not really bent at all when playing toward the low E and that seams to be the best way to keep you fingertips angled down and your wrist from cramping. On the down side for me who has to lean over to watch my hands it makes my guitar lean back and makes me bend my wrist into a 90° angle to hit the low E and A strings. Guess I'll just have to not look at what I'm doing and learn to do it without looking.
@dupawolowaish
@dupawolowaish 3 года назад
The worst part of my playing adventure was (and is) when I realized how bad everything was and i have started to fix problems with freting hands etc. With regards to looking, there will be a time when your fingers will know what to do but that takes many boring hours and months of practice. All worthed anyway

Bernth, if you can give me a good answer to this question, I will sign up on Patreon. I’ve been playing for a long time and I’ve found that on a whole note stretch, three notes per string (6/1, 6/3, 6/5) in the lower positions it is more comfortable to play middle note with my middle finger, but as the pattern goes higher up and closer to my body, it is more comfortable to switch to my ring finger for that middle note. Which is correct? Should I transition from middle to ring finger past a certain fret? Also, sitting and standing while practicing are two different things. I find my streches much more comfortable when sitting. Really appreciate the advise. If you can provide a good answer, Ill sign up!

Hi Bernth! Regarding the 4th mistake, I have tried using that area of the fingertip and in my experience, using the part that is too near the fingernail cramps the fingers which makes legato unnecessarily harder. I found it easier to play when I moved the point of contact a bit below your recommended area. I have tried implementing the recommended fix before by getting the point of contact close to the fingernail but my fingers usually felt a bit more cramped especially when using this technique on the higher strings. Unless I moved my thumb below the center of the neck to play the thinner strings, I found the fix uncomfortable. I'm not sure if this issue is exclusive to my own technique or universal to everyone but I'd greatly appreciate it if you explain this mistake a bit further. I'm trying to play with point of contact lower than the recommended area but way above the fleshy part and I'm getting a bit of buzz because I'm not pressing hard enough. Should I press harder and wait for thicker calluses to develop? or change my technique? Thanks! Great video as always man.

Nice. Wish you’d spend a little more time talking about the picking hand? I know the is a “left” dominant hand legato lesson. But your right hand usually emphasizes and accents during many legato runs. I’m upstroke dominant because of my crappy backwards pick attack 🤣. So it would be a great help to know what your picking hand is up to. Thanks for all you do. Deutschland Uber Alles 👊🏻

Picking hand is at most first note of every string is picked, first note picked only all other notes are hammers and pulloffs. When you get good at that try playing the first note with a hammer on from nowhere ,meaning no notes are ever picked.
