Andy , your an excellent teacher! As a older beginner ( 63 years old ) you make it so simple and easy to want to learn more. Your videos have been so benefital through the past 2+ years of this pandemic, as face to face lessons have not been available. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to yet more inspirational video's from you. Thanks again ! From a fan of yours watching you from Caledon Ontario, Canada.

Thank you Andy. I have been playing for just over a year now and this is just the thing I need. Playing songs is one thing, making your own version of that song is another. Keep up the great work! 👏

I watched so many videos about strumming because mine sounded so bad even though my guitar is in tune but none of them helped me. After watching yours my strumming became way better after a bit of practice. Thank you for your help.

Just a comment from someone who starred learning from a book when I was in my early 20's... I was so thrilled when I finally got to where I could play enough chords to play a few songs that I could sing and play to. Saying that, I learned a lot of bad habits or didn't learn the basic things that you are able to add on to. I'm 54 now and for the last year or so I've gone back and started learning the correct way from people like Andy, who is so good at teaching the building blocks and fundamentals to help advance in playing. There was no RU-vid back then, if anyone was wondering? Lol. Thanks, Andy!

Another thing that comes naturally to me is not playing the bottom string at all on the down strum and then playing it on the up strum. This works really well for a D chord and an A7sus4. Imagine Foo Fighters' Waiting on a War. Give it a go and hear for yourself.

Thanks for the tips. Another thing is to relax. When I was starting out I'd hold the guitar like it was a snake trying to bite me and my grip was very very tight....wasn't going to let that snake bite me. Then I relaxed, loosened my grip in BOTH hands and what ya know....things started to feel and sound better. Just relax and enjoy yourself...have fun and stay safe. 😎

I don’t know, I hold the pick in different ways with different hand positioning and articulation changes with these variables, impacting voicing. I played right handed for 10 years and couldn’t comfortably hold a pick with my right hand so I held it mostly with two fingers pointing down and the thumb pad. Now I play left handed and hold it properly and I find there were benefits to holding the pick the way I did when playing right handed so I practice holding pick a number of ways.

I've been learning guitar with Andy for 2.5 years now. I decided to learn guitar after a serious motorcycle accident losing many bones and brain bleeds plus crushed my left hand and fingers. I decided to learn righthand as ive no wrist bones on left hand and strumming was so painful. Im now an advanced intermediate grade 6. Thanks to Andy abd the team. I can honestly say Andy Crowley is a true friend and an amazing teacher. Im a proud AAA member of Andy Guitar and hope to be playing on stage with Andy in the coming months in England and beyond. 💯❤️🎸🎸😎🤘👏

Hey Andy, I’ve been playing for a number of years and have never felt very comfortable with the way my picking hand is displayed. For example, I tend to keep my middle, ring, and little fingers held out away from my palm when I’m strumming or picking. I noticed you curl these fingers back toward your palm. Does that feel more natural to you, and does that give you better control and ability to get a more pronounced sound ?

I was also taught (mid-60s) to roll my wrist, as apposed to swinging the whole arm at the elbow. I find it easier to kinda flick my wrist when I can't roll through. It's really consistent! Many of today's players over-strum their guitars and they loose the tempo. Maybe they're self-taught hard-rockers. Yikes!

Thanks for the tips! Coming up to 5 months of playing now. The only way I can do proper smooth strumming is to not use a pick at all! Just my index finger going down and thump going up. Might have to do with my right wrist being a bit less flexible after a fracture couple of years ago. So using my fingers like this I have more control and better sound. Trying to learn fingerstyle helped me with that. But I will try to apply some of the things you said here.
