I have a quick question, I replaced my PCV valve today and it worked perfectly and fixed my engine problems for about 10minutes but then suddenly my Bronco went straight back into the same sluggish mode that it was in before I replaced it. Why do you think it did this? Should I have replaced where the valve connected to the intake? (1986 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer 302 EFI)
2006 saturn Ion 2.2 pvc valve location, any ideas? I'm a widow and not a mechanic but have had to learn to do things so any help is certainly appreciated!! Thank you
these symptoms sound right for some problems ive been having, on bmw 2008 x3 3.0L, i understand it has in the past had a recall on the pcv valve, im worried the replacement was done wrong as in the US many mechanics (even at bmw dealerships) tend to do things totally wrong on these cars. do you know offhand if my vehicle pcv valve is built into the valve cover or separate part i can check?
I bought a car that was blowing a light white mist through the oil dip stick when I tried to check the oil.(while the car is running/on) Also light oil mist pushing up through the oil cap/oil refill cap when I take it off.(again while the engine is running. I for sure though the piston ring seals/ head gasket was blown (but no white or cloudy oil in dip stick). I bought the vehicle anyways thinking I had to change the motor. It turned out to be just the pcv value was stuck and it was all I had to change for less than $25. Bought the vehicle for $1000. The vehicle is still going for $5-6k. Man I hot lucky.
Excellent explanation on the the purpose of the PCV! I guarantee that most mechanics wouldn't know this! Mechanics nowadays simply replace parts until the symptoms go away!
I had a crack in the PCV hose on my HK Barina that I missed for a couple months - causing an initially very subtle but increasingly rough/high idle that would eventually either stall or get stuck at around at 1.5k rpm and lose acceleration altogether until the engine was switched off and on after a 5s wait. This video was a great help.
Great video, thank you, you saved me thousands of dollars of unneeded repairs that i was planning but it turned out that my pcv valve was stuck closed and this video was all the only info i needed to figure that out. Thank you
My 2008 Honda crv 2.4l had issues with a lean bank 1 and ran rouph at a stop and fuel mileage was horrible. I found a collapsed PCV hose and changed the hose and PCC valve. The car long and short term fuel trims went back to normal withing 10 percent of each other and fuel mileage improved with smooth idling. If Pcv valve is closed it increases crank case pressures and could cause oil leaks out of the rear crank bearings, oil pan head covers and sludge up your engine. Small part big problems. Check it and make sure it's working properly. And please don't vent to atmosphere. It's better to have engine burn it clean then to pollute air even more. I also had to clean my throttle body because the dirty air clogged everything up. I had just bought this car used and must have been like this for a while. All good now. Thx
Good video, thankyou. I have a 2005 LEXUS IS200 that my daughter drives. 190,000kms. When cold start in the morning I see a small amount of light grey or white smoke at the exhaust for maybe 7secs only. The engine has begin to use oil, we have added 1L in about 6weeks of daily commuting 50km round trip. I am thinking Valve seals but another suggestion was the PCV on the IS200. Your examples do not match my case however I am interested to get your opinion/guidance. We are in SEQLD, Australia with Summer temps in the 25-35deg C. Naturally I prefer the PCV to be the problem as replacing the valve seals is a harder job than on old cars. Cheers
I think best to prevent the PCV Valve from getting clogged up . Is to have routine oil changes every 5-6000 miles with a new filter . And to use a detergent based engine flush such as AmsOil or Liqui-Moly each time .
I had anti-freeze constantly bubbling up and getting all over my cylinder covers in my Crosstrek. I've taken it to a mechanic, and they told me that the PCV valve was busted and had sucked oil into everything, and the oil had caused a lot of tubing to crack and break. Estimated cost of repairs would be ~$1000 (all while saying there's no guarantee it would fix the issue). They also told me this could have been caused by an oil pan leak (Subaru gonna Subaru), and they gave me the estimate of $6000 to fix that. I'm thinking on just having the PCV valve and tubing replaced because that seems to be the most likely candidate of what caused the issue (and on a vehicle w/ 127K miles on it, I don't think the PCV valve had ever been changed). And if the oil pan is leaking, it must be a small leak, because I don't see oil on the ground, so it can leak a little while longer for as much as I care.
Thank you for the video. I have a 2002 Volvo S60 2.4 Turbo. I replaced the spark plugs at first it started up right away. I do smell gas fumes . I put some engine and carburetor cleaner and ran it on the Highway. It runs great on the highway with plenty of power. But after shutting off it take 2 or 3 turns to start. Do you know the location of the PCV on the 2002 Volvo S60 3.4 Turbo. Thank you for your help.
This is just the video I was looking for! I have a 2007 Audi A6 C6 with a 3.0 TDI. For a while there has been an odd unburnt fuel smell at the back of the car when warm and idling (not when cold, no smell or smoke when cold) or when has been sitting in traffic, only a puff of smoke. Does not consume oil, no check engine light. Noticed where one pipe leaves rocker cover and feeds back in at turbo, both areas now have a light misting of oil (sweating not soaking everything) has felt OK for most part, pulls hard and smooth, returns good gas mileage, starts fine, idles fine, but about three times felt the slightest fraction of a second hesitation. Can I ask does this sound like a stuck open PCV valve from what you have said, or a failing one. Car is on 180,000 miles. No excessive oil puddle inside intake area where breather feeds back into intake. - I have a funny feeling the PCV valve will be burried in the V on these engines :) Any thoughts would be great as a starting point, great video thanks ! Ben.
Thankyou for taking the time out to make this video. I do my own maintenance's but for a novice that was very well explained and not complicated to understand bravo sir. 👏👏👏
This video was very helpful. Thank you so much. My 2011 5.3v8 Silverado has 178k miles. It burns a little oil. I use it mostly for long long trips of 250-2k mile trips. I cruise at 80MPH sometimes in Mountains. I want to avoid a ring job or blowing various seals…. I don’t have any symptoms of a blown PCV except oil loss about a quart every 3K miles. Also oil is black at about 3K miles. I think I should replace the PCV as a preventative measure. What is your opinion? Thank you.
2011 shouldn't have a pcv valve because it uses a special breather that's in the drivers side valve cover that separates the oil from the blow by fumes and there is a upgraded valve cover for it that you can buy for it because there was a tsb on this from 08 models up that were having issues of to much blow by clogging up the throttle bodies on these engines . Also if your AFM auto fuel management system is still turned on that shuts cylinders down to conserve fuel and get better fuel mileage these engines had problems of those cylinders 7&8 I think it was where when they are shut down to much oil gets sprayed from the sprayer in the oil pan that sprays those cylinders and what happens is it's too much oil and after a while this oil turns into carbon that gets into the oil control ring lands on the pistons and what happens is the oil control rings get stuck in the ring lands instead of being pulled out to the cylinder walls by the cross hatch marks from the honing process when the engine is built at the factory and the honing process is what pulls the compression rings and oil control rings out of the ring lands into the cylinder walls so it builds compression. So once those oil control rings are stuck in those ring lands you get more blow by and oil consumption because the oil rings aren't doing their job of scraping excess oil off of the cylinder walls on its way back down . Try the valve cover and if I were you buy a Diablo sport tuner that lets you turn the AFM off or a Range disabler that turns the AFM off that plugs into the OBD port on your drives side just under the dash . I was have the same issue and did the upgraded valve cover and shut the AFM off and less oil consumption and the trucks instant fuel economy gauge in the dash says I'm getting only a 1.5 mile less fuel mileage with all 8 cylinders working . The other thing is if you leave the AFM on eventually you will have lifters that will fail because when the VLOM that's under the intake valley pan turn on and then cuts the cylinders back those lifters aren't being lubricated and they will fail and can do engine damage to a point that the engine is junk and either has to be rebuilt or a different good running or new crate engine installed . There was a lawsuit against GM on this but the judge tossed it out and probably was paid off from GM to do so under the table and a lot of people were having major issues with these engines . This covered the 2008-2012 models but now there is another lawsuit that is for the 2012-2021 trucks with the 5.3 engine that are having the exact same problem but if the people's lawyers win this they will be the ones that get most of the lawsuit money and the people who wrote their names down to add to the lawsuit they won't get enough money from the lawsuit to even fix their engines or have them replaced by GM . The only way GM did any repairs on these engines is it the truck was still under its 5 year 50,000 mile warranty or if the person who bought the truck had bought the extended warranty and GM would honor that but nothing past these . They make AFM delete kits that come with a new cam and roller lifters and lifter boxes plus the head gaskets and pushrods and needed plugs to plug the oil ports off from the VLOM so the engine runs with out the AFM runs on all 8 but after this is done you need to send the computer into have the AFM shut off internally or use the Diablo sport tuner or the Range disabler but once done these engines actually run much better than they did from the factory and make more power . GM also made a oil diverter that shuts that oil sprayer off and takes that oil and sprays it towards the oil pan sump where it should be and found out that spraying all that extra oil in the bottom of the engine specifically at cyl 7&8 that wasn't a good idea because it was causing the mentioned extra oil consumption and blow by because of the stuck oil rings .
@@peteloomis8456 wow thank you so much for this deep explanation. Well said and thank you for your time. I’d like to turn off the VLOM but the dealership warns against it. Also, I am a bit confused about the Diablo system. If I do that will I have to replace the rollers and plugs and all? Or are you saying that the actual modifications cause further problems and to just do themDiablo only?
Appreciate the video. I'm a new BMW owner, changing my PCV/CCV on a 2004 525i M54. I see all the PCV related parts and hoses on the intake manifold side, but where are these cylinder/crankcase gases that are transferred over to the intake manifold? I see no pathway to the intake, just pathways circulating around the intake. Also can you discuss what is a proper amount of vacuum, all three ports on the back of my intake are plugged off as well as the small vacuum port on the PCV valve. Then there's the Y shaped jet sucking pump system connecting to the brak booster, to underneath the intake manifold, and a vacuum line to the air intake boot attaching to the throttle body. Really
You need to remove the plastic cover that sits on the intake manifold. Underneath it you'll find a black plastic rail, with nozzles going into individual intake runners. That's where the oil fumes are vented into the intake. The PCV sits below the intake, and it's difficult to reach it without removing the intake.
Hello. Hello. I have a 2004 volvo xc90 which is displaying symptoms of a bad PCV valve as described in your most helpful video. Could you please help me to find the PCV valve in my car? Thank you. Robert.
Thank you for your very informative video bro👍👏 I have an Audi A6 2008. Vehicle: Audi A6 C6 4F 2.0L TFSI 2008 (4 cylinders) only one bank. Only P0171 no other codes. System too lean at a doe bank1 Freez frame DTC : P0171 Engine load : 20.8 % MAF : Air flow rate. 3 g/s RPM: 742 Fuel rai pressure: 688.92 psi Short term fuel % trim : 3.125 % Long term fuel % trim : 0. % Fuel / Air ratio : 14.63 % Any idea, appreciated. Cheers.
If you do an engine swap and increase displacement from 5.0 liters to 7.0 liters, should the PCV valve be upgraded or enlarged for the bigger displacement engine?
My volvo has so much white smoke from exhaust and engine light and coolant in the oil. We believe it’s a Pcv is the issue. Is it possible that this bad pcv could cause the head gasket to also be damaged? There is so much white smoke the moment you turn it on and won’t stop . It’s only 2019
Have a 96 grand marquis replaced valve cover gasket on passenger now it idle a lil ruff n act like it wants to stall wen I put shift to drive could this b a pcv value going or have gone bad
Thank you for posting this video. My truck has all six symptoms. I changed out the knock sensor. I did a full tuneup. I replaced the mass airflow sensor. I replaced oxygen sensors. Tomorrow I will be replacing the PCV valve and I guarantee the truck will be normal again.
Greetings from Australia! Brilliant presentation 🎉 Is it possible to clean the PCV valve in an Ultrasonic Bath?

thnx for ur info. keep up the good work. What would cause an engine to not feel smooth in the steering wheel, while when running? NOT a vibration, just a weird, not so smooth feeling in the steering wheel, as it use to feel. The vehicle running great, but is 15yrs old with 195thou miles.
I have a 1998 Honda Accord V6 with automatic transmission and 328,000 Km. For about 5 years there has been a thump or thud when starting it when cold. As it warms up the thump or thud gradually decreases to the point at normal operating temperature it’s quite mild. I have had the plugs replaced, the EGR valve cleaned, the valves adjusted, the MAF sensor replaced, the throttle body cleaned and oil and filter changes done regularly. Nothing has helped. I would be grateful if you could advise. Thank You!
Hi, I actually have some crank case breather hose , that constantly splits apart. It cracks, From the start and end of its pipes. I don’t know what could cause the problem. I’m replacing it every time.
My PCV and Rocker Cover were replaced in my 2023 Hyundai Tucson with 4K miles on it today. It has failed 4 pressure/consumption tests and is consuming 3qts of oil per 700 miles. Does this sound like a viable solution or should I demand a new engine since it's a lease?
Can this mess with jerking while accelerating like it's congested and cause the car to be in the wrong gears or would that be my vtg transfer case oil wear?
@@MechanicBase i have blue smoke only at start up on my 2007 mustang gt with 50K original miles,,,i dont think the pcv valve has ever been changed..is the pcv valve the cause for the smoke or bad valve seals?..i changed my oil every 3-4K miles
Excellent video. thanks. Driving an audi 80 tdi with a 1Z engine, giving grey smoke and idles rough when engine is hot. No warning lights on such an old car. Could this be PCV valve issue?
And also the problem could be the pcv valve grommet ( it's bushing), bad grommet will cause vacuum.leak, so you need to change both regularly pcv an its grommet .
I have a Elantra 2018 GT (Base). Is it easy access to change the PCV valve? I get a rough sound when starting the car and saw some oil over the engine gasket beside the spark plug area.
The best video I have seen re the PCV ,,well done and thanks. on my way to see my local auto electrician, I think the valve is in the rocker box so expensive.
PCV are generally cheap to replace. Use the factory part if available. They can also be cleaned with a couple shots of degreaser or brake cleaner after removing from engine.
I have a 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer ES 2.0L with rough idle, sometimes will blow smoke upon stepping on the gas pedal, will stall at red lights, leaks oil from an unknown source, and has a check engine light. Fuel economy seems to be unaffected until the symptoms appear as they are intermittent. The car will go into limp mode as well. I have replaced: downstream o2 sensor, valve cover gasket, air filter, oil changes, etc. Does this sound like it could be a PCV valve and do you know where it would be on my car? Thank you for any help provided, and I loved how you included the mechanics behind the PCV valve as well!
Try cleaning throttle body and pcv valve with throttle body cleaner. Look for cracked plastic intake parts while you are cleaning those. Take back the MAF if possible and replace the OEM part. MAF codes are notoriously unreliable.
OK so 2017 jeep renegade latitude overheated and lost all oil to register we pulled over in less that a qrt mile and shut it off and now it won't Stat it will turnover and you can hear it fire but will not start any way not even for a second any insight is welcome
I have a 2011 328i xdrive sedan. Is pcv valve under valve cover, as opposed to older models located under intake manifold? Lots of Utube vids on this topic are about engine type, not year and model, thus very confusing. Thanks
I read somewhere on the box when i replaced mine that they last 60k miles on average. Or maybe that was their warranty? But not an expensive part for 60k imo
Is the motor 1KZ TE diesel parado 1998 equipped with a PCV VALVE ?? If yes , what is its location.?? Motor expert already changed new turbo for excessive white blue smoke+ engine oil from tailpipe. No effect Living in rural area Pakistan Any guidance from any one plz. ??
Hi thanks for posting this video. I have e36 318ti compact m44, 210000km. recently it started giving headaches: engine will stop, especially short distance driving, usually an explosion in exhaust follows. Found out crankshaft breather hose that was cracked, changed it but problem seems to repeat. could it be a faulty PCV valve ??? I know nothing about how engine works
The PCV valve in my 2014 Honda Accord(2.4 4 cyl.) is just a plastic piece with no "one way" valve in it. You can blow straight through it from either way. How does this thing do its job?
It wouldn’t run very well at all if there is no valve mechanism. I’d assume that someone has previously blocked off the hose where it connects at the inlet manifold. They have either run a secondary hose elsewhere to relieve crank case pressure or the hose is venting into the atmosphere somewhere. Do you tend to have oil leaks going on? When crank case pressure build and isn’t running out of a PCV valve that can open then it’s the engine seals being put under pressure creating leaks.
Please I have search through the internet and cannot find / identify the PCV valve of an M112 engine. I saw that of M272 but not that of M112 which I need. Yea I know the hose only. Please can you help with a link to the PCV of an M112 engine or the image. Thanks in anticipation.
in the diagram you show the PCV Valve installed in the head of the engine which is not correct, it is install in the Cylinder Block as its name indicates , Positive Crankcase Ventilation,
If it's a 155 PS, the PCV valve should be on the rocker cover, on the side facing the turbocharger. You'll need to remove the plastic engine cover to see it.
Hi l took my car to the mechanic to get a valve gasket replace and after 3 weeks of driving it completely shut off and on further inspection I noticed that the pcv tube assembly was broke but it seen like it was patch with a heat- shrink tube. So now they told me It seen that I got a head gasket leak and that what cause the issue on the first place. The car it's 2014 with only 75000 miles so it's neither to old or with high mileage.
My PCV Valve stuck in the valve cover. I haved 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 L , I'm not able to pull it out, it made out of plastic part and I'm afraid to broke it. Do you have any advise ? Thks
Even if you break it, you'll still be able to get the rest out since it's plastic. You just have to be careful not to damage the threads of whatever it's screwing into. Use some penetrating oil and then after that sits for a while, tap whatever wrench you're using to remove it very lightly with a rubber mallet to get it going. And don't torque the new one down hard at all. Most of them have an o-ring on them to seal them.
That’s the PCV valve and is very common on the GM ( Opel included ) 1.4 litre turbo engine. The PCV system fails on these vehicles because of a small “ rubber??? “ valve in the intake. There is a company that makes a kit that bypasses that weak link “ valve” in the intake and you end up with a check valve in one of the hoses that can be serviced in under 10 minutes if it’s needed. Repair shops and Dealerships replace the plastic intake manifold and the plastic valve cover but that only “ fixes things “ for a short time and the problem will reoccur again. Like this guy said “ it’s not cheap “. The valve cover is around $150 Canadian dollars and the plastic intake manifold is three or four times that. Along with several hours of labour at $130-$170 an hour you’re looking for a big Bill. If you search Dre Dan on RU-vid and you should find the info to check out the kits.
My car boggs a lot and I recently noticed a lot of oil leaks around the engine seal and even the engine oil filter started leaking oil I am not if this maybe the issue
You'll have to remove the plastic engien cover. The PCV tube goes near the oil filler cap. But the valve is most likely integrated into the camshaft cover.
My 2015 Honda Accord Sport has NO symptoms other than burning oil. To stay at appropriate level, I have to add ~1 quart per every 1,000 miles driven. Could this be PCV valve?
Civic type R FN2 PCV about 40$ + aluminium washer 30 cents = dont skimp on the washer 😅 located close to the alternator and pretty easy to swap. Hose clamp is the hardest part to reach.
I have a 2002 Mercedes Benz clk 430. I don't know if it has a pcv valve, but I am getting a start but quickly dies out. I thought it was because I ran out of gas. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter. It has fuel pressure. It has spark. No vaccuum leak. Just running out of ideas what it could be. Please help.
@@bluesdirt6555I have 290,000 miles on my 2006 Escape 4 cylinder with the original PCV valve. I have not changed it because the motor runs very good, and removing the intake manifold is required. The same for the thermostat. Some day I may have to.
