We can all preach about the things we should be doing but there are also some important things that every creative person SHOULDN'T be doing.
I have dozens but here are my own personal Top 6.
1. Don't have too high an expectation level
2. Don't be flaky and inconsistent
3. Don't rely too heavily on people
4. Don't be the starving artist
5. Don't stupidly price your work
6. Stop saying 'Yes' to everything

It seems like a lot of this advice can also be applied to being an entrepreneur or a musician or other vocations where someone is self employed and responsible for bringing in their own income. This is great advice. It seems that creative type professions need to consider the business side as much as the creative side to make a living. We can do anything we put our minds to.

I love your enthusiasm and energy ! It truly shows how passionate you are about painting and helping others find a way to make their own art. I am a 59 year old person - soon to be sixty - who had a stroke almost ten years ago, I am still struggling with it. My left side is very weak and I now a stutter, go figure. I've been trying to do something with my life but it always came to nothing. I found your channel just yesterday and I immediately subscribed. I used to play piano and liked drawing. Being creative requires confidence and being spontaneous doesn't come easily. It takes serious guts to engage with our creative side. That in itself shouldn't be underestimated. When I'm feeling dry and out of the flow I simply make marks with no intention or objective in mind; just that, in the moment. I close my eyes or move to the sound of music, anything to get the flow going. Soon enough you'll find that something emerges. Also, I think it's important to treat it like a diary entry and disregard the thought of what others might think of it. Who cares, just enjoy yourself and see what happens. In the times we are living in this simple act can be revolutionary.

On behalf of all us abstract painters, thank you. We have the hardest job of all: we have to create something no one has ever seen before and then have it make sense to the human eye and brain. A bit tougher than painting a posie or a puppy.

Outstanding! 100% on saying yes. I learned the hard way. I give everything a more serious thought now. Yes can get/ put yourself as artist in a horrible position. Be consistent and don't be the starving artist have been my advise for 12 years. Continue to lead. Depending on what kind of artist you choose to be, be fully in that. I chose to be an artist that is financially successful and has a critical context in the dialogue of the industry of art, its history and present field. Know your market, follow that, do your research, ask for help (assistance and marketing outreach), collaborate, do your best, know your boundaries, try and fail and try again.

I'm an up and coming digital artist that's trying to do at least one art work a day and make a minimum of two music videos a week. I've a lot to learn and I do find that I'm doubting myself. Which is why I find it difficult to say I'm an up and coming artist. However, I believe that I'll do great work that'll lead to success. Which people will also find valuable once I hone my skills. I'm new to your channel, though if that's your artwork I think you're an amazing artist. Great stuff! 👍🏾 I’m always thinking and contemplating on many of these excellent points. I learned a while back about setting a healthy level of expectations on those that you know! I set mine low, because I don’t want any animosity to build towards them if they don’t support my art. That just lets me know that they are not my target audience and I move on! I can love them for who they are and move on to channeling my energies to finding my target audience! BTW: I love the calendar, I’d like to make some like that featuring my art! 😁

I really LOVE your work and your approach; spot on "dont's". Your paintings make me think of what I see when I dream or meditate, a form of photo realism but from another dimension. Just BEAUTIFUL, would love to see your work in person! Yeah, I beat the starving artist out the door (LOVE that!) 16 years ago, did very well for myself as a historical reproduction potter, and folks willingly paid what I asked. People WANT to buy from you if they think you are happy and prosperous, and especially if you show a general sense of appreciation. At 58, I had to leave the pottery for health reasons and have gone back to my first love, photo realistic oil painting. I am now 60, and continue to do well, thanks to my wonderful patrons. I love you walking through the gallery, love seeing the amazing paintings and sculptures. Regarding juried competitions, the artists is paying to be rejected. Art books are an old advertising scam. ArtFreaks International is definitely one to avoid. Looking forward to watching a live painting session!
