Things i most love about this channel The selection of cars and just the Honesty... no sugar coating or BS, its just straight to the point and covers the main bits we all need to know, its not too little information and its not too much information Keep up the great work Paul and I hope to see this channel pass 100k and maybe, just maybe get on the road to a Million
Shamefully, it does make me feel a bit better to know that even owners of cars costing over $100K get pissed off at the same things I do with my Pulsar
Im surprised to learn you love sound systems, I do too and thats the one thing I wish you would touch more on in your reviews, the brand and sound quality etc. Thanks for the vid
@@CarExpertAus I put a lot of emphasis on acoustics and sound systems on a car (and even on phone, tv or computer). it would be great if car reviewers focused on the acoustics aspects more.
Agree with all. I fixed buffeting myself quite easily but no Apple Car Play is insane. The influx of demos was great for us as we paid 85K incl stamp duty and rego for a Sep 2019 plate car with 550km on the clock a year later. Saved 20K on a GTS with alcantara vs new. Lost a year of warranty but with 550km, might as well have been new. Launch control is total garbage, more so now with an extra 150hp, so launch in 2nd with everything off against the foot brake. Much better
I got my 2020 Supra in the first round that shipped out and its been an absolute beast. As far as your criticisms they are all accurate however for the majority of people who buy this car, the sound system, infotainment and the rest are not really why we got the car. Here is my take: Wind Buffeting: I spent a couple hundred bucks on sweet carbon fiber stick on air displacers by the mirror and the buffeting is completely gone. They should fix it on that sweet hard top removable + manual version that's for sure coming out... The Sound System: Its not terrible, if you want *great* replace it, this is true of almost any car below 100k and many above that number. Performance first. Screen Brightness: Never been an issue, driven east coast to west coast round trip (in US) twice now. Never noticed. No Apple CarPlay/Online Services: Didn't know that was a thing. Launch Control: Launch control sucks and will always suck on this car for reason's you mentioned, however you can get well under advertised times, even faster 0-60 on the 2020 vs 2021 by learning to launch it yourself. Resale Value: If you want resale value buy a Subaru, if you want one of the most unique and fun touring cars that does all the things a small sports coup should and looks good doing it, buy a supra and kiss your money goodbye, especially since you won't be able to help yourself from modding it. Verdict: Bad ass car, need manual option eventually but still a rare treasure of a car in the dying sports car market.
Good content piece, anyone can read a brochure or regurgitate a manufacturers spec list, but it's the day to day driving that gives an owner some value of their purchase, which you captured well here for the Supra. I thoroughly enjoyed the depth of your recent Carnival review (currently have one on order) but it was very evident that you wouldn't be the type of individual to actually purchase one (which is fine) but you miss some of the 'features' that may be of benefit or even cause issues for those wanting to live with the day to day of the vehicle.
TBH. Resale value took a hit before the car was even released when they opted for a BMW drivetrain. This stigma will take more than just a collab to remedy.
You talking about subscribers make me check your subs and it's under 100k that's like a big surprise for me because of the quality of content you are packing! This channel is massively underrated. Keep up the good work guys! ❤️
Another great video, this is the kind of information i want when buying a car not the 1000s of 0-100 drag races that in the real world dont count for much
About the wind buffeting and sound system, I'm guessing that Toyota requires all their drivers to wear helmets during driving tests and so thats why they didn't pick up the issues. If they did all their testing in Japan, then thats the case. They wear helmets ALL the TIME in Japan for everything. Its like "Ok, today we test the sound system" (drivers all put their helmets on). Yoshi says "But we can't hear the stereo with our helmets on" (Boss checks with insurance company about not wearing helmet and returns the next day) "Sorry team, we MUST wear helmets when driving the cars or we're not covered if there is an accident" THATS Japan.
Honestly, for the money of the supra i can think of two options that work better imo. Either you get yourself a Mk 4 or even 3 second hand OR buy a Golf RR Mk 7.5 and do some very nice modification on it with body kits and power
I've got a taste for a quality sound system too. A few manufacturers are using stickers to bling it but sound quality is rubbish. VW are you listening 😆
Paul Maric - You are by far one of the better car reviewers in Australia. I am generally not a fan of Aust car reviews because they often appear disingenuous or worse captured by vested interests (e.g. junkets or freebies from the manufacturers). Much appreciate your work.
Supra Owner here - My largest gripe is if you're out driving on a beautiful summers day, windows down, and you go to spray your windshield, as one does, you will 1003% get soaked by the windscreen washer fluid flowing up the windshield and down into to cabin through the open window. You'll arrive where ever you're going looking like your drive was a little TOO exciting
The Supra is an awesome car, but watching this video makes me even happier with my BMW M140i. None of these problems, identical drivetrain and tech, more practical, and only half the price. The Supra does look cooler though for sure :)
Love your work Paul...Keep it up....Greetings from a Kiwi Mk 7 R owner 👍...Very interesting video and agree Toyota did a bad job on yhe practicality part of the Supra....but looks great and drives well 👌
Welcome to the world of BMW!!! 1. Wind buffeting is quite common on quite a few BMWs. 2. Sound system has always been average on BMWs... despite JBL or Harman/Kardon (same company) 3. Think screen brightness is very specific to Supra.. 4. That's really poor from Toyota Australia 5. Launch control on the ZF gearbox is quite average... I had a M235i a few years back with a tune... and I struggled to get to claimed times... it's often faster NOT using LC. 6. Think it is the general case for cars in this price range, especially euro brands! It's a massive problem I have with Audi, Mercedes, BMWs. M2 competition was $120k rrp all those people who jumped in at the start had no discounts... after 6-12 months, you could get one heavily discounts at high $90s or low 100 (but people who don't know it's common to get 20% off gets screwed as well). It screws with customers resale value. People who put their cars on carsales now is struggling to sell... as they took 20k off their purchase price... but unknowing to them people pay 20% less only a few months after them... or they can get a brand new one for the same price. So there are people who paid 120k and people who paid 100k... probably same year model... and both have their cars on carsales for 90k... one will lose 30k after 18 months and other 10k. Unlike Tesla or Porsche... nothing is discounted ever!! So car holds it's true value, rather than distorted value.
Nice drive Paul with refreshing honesty from a motoring journo - I’ve owned a WRX, Nissan Godzilla, BRZ and a vintage Supra which I thought for the little tech it had was a fun drivers car with that beautiful six-cylinder note and non-turbo horsepower. Toyota is a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ brand as it consistently holds world leading reliability and practicality status but a scrooge on fitment options and functions as you stated with the info system - for a 100000k price tag that is BS! - the buffeting also occurred with my 2004 XT Turbo Forester but easily fixed - yes the depreciation is cruel but I got lucky with the Nissan Godzilla - now I’m a pedestrian Hilux owner due to changing lifestyle and a vehicle choice deal-breaker for me was safe placement of cup holders in right side upper dash 👍🏻 - look forward to your 2021 content - John in SA.
Would love to see a Dragparison of your Supra against the Nissan 400z when it is out. Also could do one pitting it directly against its sister car the Z4 roaster.
Well done Paul. Appreciate the honest take. The wind buffeting issue is a head scratcher and crazy they didn't address it with the new model update. I think the strategy of Toyota to add feature a the car should have had day one, each model year will hurt sales. As you pointed out with yours, its like they are punishing the loyal, early on supporters and rewarding those that wait. I don't like that.
Your point about the wind buffeting and hundreds of thousands of hours of testing etc etc is exactly the way I feel about whoever let the Mitsubishi Triton design/aesthetics get put into production. Yuck....that being said, great vid :) !
NOT HAPPY Toyota. This Supra 'Demonstrater' situation is caring for customers at its worst. Won't be buying Toyota any time soon. Thanks for the 'heads-up' on these issues Paul.
The problem is not that it is toyotas product but rather bmws, it's literally a bmw in every aspect especially build quality, my moms 2018 camry xse is much much better in terms of quality comparing to this abomination
I'd like to see Chris absolutely rag your car with you in it (tho probably only when the tires are about to be replaced). On a serious note, get Chris to do a hot lap on totally wrecked tires and then on new ones (in the wet, if you guys get rain), to show us how bad/not bad old tires are
Great review as always Paul, but maybe you should have mentioned the proliferation of fake vents all around! I took a mate to check one out and although he's not necessarily a 'car guy', it was the first (and most) mentioned flawed detail that got his attention.
Audi engineers: “let’s market the average or worse 0-100km the car achieves” Japanese engineers: “lets advertise the best time that was achieved only once during development, that no buyer is likely to ever achieve”
The Supra is obviously a nice, fast car. My only problem with it is the existence of barely used BMW M4s at the same price, a car which has all the performance of the Supra and none of the things I dislike about the Supra (wind buffeting, weird exterior styling, fake vents). Honestly, I would actually buy the Yaris GR if I wanted a Toyota sports car.
Now that's it's 2024, used Supras retain far more of their value than Tesla model 3s. Of course, there have been no further power increases but fortunately, handling is noticeably better, starting with the 2023 model.
Another problem with Toyota not protecting their used car price is with financing new cars. The residual value/balloon payment will have to be lower, increasing monthly payments and making the car affordable for fewer people, and possibly impacting a potential buyer’s decision when comparing with other cars which can be financed more cheaply. So not good for owners, and not good for Toyota.
I originally started watching this channel because you did a long review on the Subaru Forester while most other channels in Australia had only created little 5 minute videos which were barely worth watching. Your review was detailed and enjoyable and after comparing the other mid size SUV’s in the market and a few test drives, I ended up buying one and it’s due for delivery end of Feb 2020. Your opinion as well as other videos you did on SUV’s helped me make what I consider to be a well informed decision which I think will work out great. Please keep up the detailed long reviews. They are really good to watch and I think other channels/sites really do a disservice to customers by not doing their job as well as you do.
Supra owner here... yes audio system is total after thought... yes wtf is Toyota aus/Nz up to with their connectivity- total wind up!! yes intentional year on year updates will push me closer to a Porsche tbh
@@CarExpertAus has to be a 911... almost went for a 2002 996 C4S before the Supra... now waiting to see what the depreciation cycle does to a 992 Carerra! But... still have a soft spot for Toyota and still curious to see how Supra evolves-on numbers, the Supra is nipping at Porsche heels I reckon
It's why, it's usually only a business owners that buys new cars, because they can claim the depreciation and private buyers usually buy near new secondhand.
For the wind noise thing you can get some wind deflector I saw someone else get and that fixes the problem. If you haven't already you should look into it
How do you get on with the tiny fuel tank size? Many cars have the buffeting issue. A design issue to put the driver off driving with windows down and reducing fuel efficiency?
Paul, when reviewing new cars, please say if it has an electronic parking brake, or a old style, manual one. Please mention the engine RPM at 100km/hr freeway speed. Advise about using the auto to slow the car, when a red light is up ahead. I know autos are poor at engine retardation, but it can save brake friction material. When cars are produced in 2021, please look at lower end cars, Corollas, Kia, etc, that most people buy. Some comment on the Toyota CVT with the conventional launch gear to aid the CVT, would be technically nice.
Wind buffeting not too much of an issue here in Sydney where you drive mostly at 70km/h or under. Agree the sound system is abysmal for a close to AUD$100k vehicle (Tinny is a word that comes to mind) Like yourself I find it annoying that Toyota Oz didn't bring Carplay down under..there should no conceivable reason why that is. It is literally a software update on the iDrive 6.0 system. Launch control is useless and you're better off doing it yourself. MY19 Supras are now very sought after because the ECU is currently unlockable on the post June build MY20 Supras.
Appreciated the video, but this massive worrying about depreciation seems to be incredibly anxiety inducing. I used to get similar feelings. At this point if Id had such thoughts about a purchase Id rather not have one at all. Somehow makes it seem more like an Excel than enjoying life and being a car guy. Take care, have fun!
I have the Supra 2021 A91 Edition Nytro Yellow. Screen in the car is to dark to see even with the brightness on max and only good to look at at night. Car has major blind spots. It is a fun beautiful car though and very fast, maybe too much for this old codger.
The lack of CarPlay is what stopped me dropping $100k on a Supra - it’s absolutely insane that a $100k car in 2021 doesn’t come with CayPlay or Android auto. Just completely bonkers.
I bet the wind buffetting thing was noticed but it adds 0.1% more drag and messes with fuel economy or some BS enviro thing. Someone probably said "most people will drive with windows up"
Unless you have a ton of money, people saying they just 'fixed it with aftermarket parts' are deluding themselves. Dealers LOVE it when people put aftermarket parts on their in-warranty vehicles - it gives them an excuse to DENY a warranty claim. For example, since a stereo replacement involves electrics, they could deny any and all warranty claims involving the electrical system. At least that's the way it is in America, unless you have a great dealer.
There are seven things I don’t like about it, your six plus the look! And that wind buffeting is definitely a deal breaker. Me thinks Toyota should stick to making cars for the cardigan brigade!
@@CarExpertAus Nobody likes to hear some snoozer telling them that their car doesn’t look any good and for that I apologise! Maybe it’s my OCD Paul but for me there’s just too many curves and shapes going on. Like so many other Toyota’s and Lexus models - nothing’s symmetrical and that does my head in!🤯😂
Don’t get too salty about Supra connect app. I hear a bit broken and have to register twice for a start. I’m sure like my GT86 some of the app will expire too in a few years which is immensely frustrating. We also don’t get the newer GR Supra here in the U.K but oddly just had the 2.0 announced. I think Toyota is planning to update each year like you said so price will drop a bit.
I went to look at one . First walk up ,I'm amazed ..its so tiny. I didn't even want to drive it . I'll keep my old 6 speed vette, thanks. Not sure bout that motor either. Cheers from here.
Yeah, that window would get to me. After 8k miles on my Stinger, the sun roof glass vibrates at high speeds and small bumps. Gets me pissed right quick
Would def like a brief opinion on sound quality in future reviews. My rx8 Bose sound system is pretty average even though it’s upgraded from factory. My Mrs stock fiesta sound system sounds amazing. Go figure
A dial for screen brightness....I don't know modern cars very well but that seems weird....you would think it would normally be in the touch screen system settings?
